Jordin Tootoo Suspended Two Games For Hit On Miller

Ed. Note: AcesNines beat us to the punch on this one, so he gets front page honors. However, we've used our magical editorial powers to embed the video below that he linked to in his original FanPost.

Brendan Shanahan's video explains it above. Two games because while he was attempting to score, he still made contact with Miller's head and a Goaltender must feel safe in his crease. While I wish it was more than this, I honestly thought that he was going to get off free on the "Erhoff pushed him" excuse. We'll see what Lindy's reaction is; we already know he wanted 10 games to make a statement. Thoughts?

He sounded only grudgingly happy with the 5 game maximum for the phone hearing. He won’t be happy. But I don’t think there will be as much hubbub this time.

Meh

At least it’s something, it was a little reckless, he got a little push, and he got a little suspension. I don’t think Lindy will be happy about it, but I don’t think it should’ve been a 10 game either for this play. How can we know what Tootoo was thinking, the play already happened and it’s not like the Sabres are in a series with them and Tootoo misses the twotwo against us.

2 games, I think that’s fair.

by VFN FTW on Dec 6, 2011 2:04 PM EST reply actions

Therefore, Lucic’s hit should have had the same logic applied and resulted in a similar, if not lengthier, suspension.

If Tootoo deserves two games, then Lucic deserved a five-game suspension.

But “BS” can also hide it behind the “clarification” he got at the owners meeting about how they wanted goalie plays enforced. This is not to say that I disagree with you at all though, just the first excuse he will go to.

But Tootoo plays for a small market team that the league doesn’t care about and can therefore afford to make an example of without fear of media and advertiser backlash. They can’t do that to a Bruins player.

Yep, as much as the league craps on the Sabres, we’re just some backwater hicks down here that don’t matter. O6 team? Oh no, can’t touch them!

wait .. WHAT ?

No…..

Lucic was appropriately given a 2 minute minor for Charging. Miller came out of the crease to play the puck.

Lucic was bad but Tootoo did a Booboo !

just because the rule states that a goalie is not fair game outside of the crease, does not mean crease = outside of the crease. I would think that a goalie getting hit IN the crease is worse.

by Mikol on Dec 9, 2011 8:31 AM EST up reply actions

Agree to disagree, I guess

Tootoo was at least trying to make a scoring chance. Lucic had lost control of the puck before even crossing the blue line, and in frustration that Miller had beaten him to the puck he plowed through him. So in that sense, and in the sense of how severe each hit was (in terms of both impact and injury), I would argue that the Lucic hit was worse. Because both plays were clearly illegal under the charging rule, both deserved major penalties and game misconducts. Lucic got away with it in the game, Tootoo did not. Shanahan had a chance to correct that message with supplemental discipline in the case of Lucic, and he elected not to. Realizing his mistake, he made sure the message was more clear with Tootoo.

What? No suspension of Miller for leaving the crease?

Go Sabres!

by drwho62 on Dec 6, 2011 2:17 PM EST reply actions

Well...

I felt Tootoo should have gotten at least 5 games. With Ryan being in the crease Shanahan had to suspend #22. Otherwise it would be the same as the decision with Milan Lucic. Two games is NOT Enough.

by Robert P. Moscato on Dec 6, 2011 2:30 PM EST reply actions

Why? Lucic gets zero and Tootoo gets 5? Out of crease is a poor excuse for Lucic running Miller with a big SE grin on his face. Tootoo was making a play for the goal NOT the goalie and tried to avoid Miller by jumping over him (Tootoo’s done that before). If it was five games; I would be done with this sport.

by DonBorvio on Dec 6, 2011 7:06 PM EST up reply actions

and lucic was chasing a puck at full speed for what he thought was a great scoring chance, and miller was way out of the crease. You can argue that he should have been suspended, but no way was it worse than what tootoo did.

He’s gone from Shananhammering James Wisniewski eight games to being Colin Campbell’s mouth puppet. Everything is arbitrary as ever, just with 100% more video explanation. This is more than this one decision. I’m pissed.

Does that mean that Kaleta’s headbutting was twice as bad as what Tootoo did?

by Philaster on Dec 6, 2011 6:23 PM EST up reply actions

Not Surprised he was suspended

But 10 games ? c’mon Lindy. While a Goalie should be protected in his crease and not fear injury, 10 Games is over the top. But your a coach and thats expected of you to fight for your player. Now if it was a Steve Downie – Esq type of a hit like he did on Dean McAmmond then that would warrent a 10 game suspension but …. But…..

Tootoo was trying to score and was pushed and its hard to stop forward momentum. so it wasnt like it was BLATANT like the Downie hit was totally Blatant.

SO .. Yeah.. 2 games for hitting a star goalie in the head who was in his crease who just came back from a concussion injury from Lucic but the Player (Tootoo) did not intentionally mean to harm or injure the player..

So Tootoo did a Booboo !

If you are skating full speed straight at the crease, what do you think will happen if you don’t slow down? That’s why a suspension is in order. We cannot have players skating full speed at the crease like that, endangering goalies.

by mxsd on Dec 7, 2011 11:41 AM EST up reply actions

Maybe you didnt understand what I wrote. I am not saying that he shouldnt have been suspended. If you are going at full speed at a goalie and crash into him ~ The league protects Goalies ~ You should be suspended.

As a Coach I am sure Lindy Ruff tells his players like Pominville to go HARD and FAST towards the net. To crash the net. AN yet he also screams foul play and wants a 10 game suspension when his star goalie gets back from a concussion and an opposing player crashes into him his first game back.

like I said.. its not like the STUPID Steve Downie play where he flew into the air and crashed into McAmmond with intention to hurt him. Tootoo was trying to score and not hurt the goalie but did crash into Miller.

So a 2 game suspension is the proper punishment.

Its funny … Here people are screaming foul and we want Tootoo’s head on a silver platter and over at “On the Forecheck” they are crying Foul that Tootoo got punished what Lucic did.

I am taking the “Homer-ism’s” out of the Fans and looking at it objectively.

As a Coach I am sure Lindy Ruff tells his players like Pominville to go HARD and FAST towards the net.

I am sure that Lindy Ruff does not say, “Go hard and fast to the net, and once you lose the puck, keep going. Jump at the goaltenders head and make sure you fall on top of them”

Dude take the Homer-Ism out of your fandom and look at it objectively. No I am sure Lindy Ruff does not say that either

"Go hard and fast to the net, and once you lose the puck, keep going. Jump at the goaltenders head and make sure you fall on top of them"

But really… DID TooToo mean to hurt him ? NO ! It is hard to stop when your going hard and fast at the net .. again .. its not like the Steve Downie hit on Dean McAmmond ~ that was reckless and intentional. This was not. it did warrent a 2 game suspension because you want to protect goalies and you want to protect superstars so stop screaming like Tootoo Shot and attempted Murder on Miller !

Unbelievable enough, Flyerrob is not a spam account. He’s SBNation infamous though.
And I don’t think Lindy seriously expected 10 games. He is lobbying for the future for the NHL to be more like the NFL in taking injuries to star players more seriously.

Imagine you have an awesome, well-paying job doing what you love most for a living. Moreover, while not really a star, you are universally well-respected and admired as being good at your job and you find great success. You do your job for years and years until you retire and get the proverbial gold watch and a pat on the back.
Unlike the great majority of your peers, however, when you retire you have a chance to take an administrative job, say with the government, that doesn’t pay as well but allows you to wield great influence over your former peers. All of your decisions are now scrutinized and second guessed. People say that you are bad at your job, that you have a million biases pulling you in a million different directions. Your prior legacy has the potential of having an embarrassing footnote.
This is what Brendan Shanahan faces. I’m thinking that he might not get out this year or the next year, but if this is what you had to face would you stay long term? I think Colin Campbell did it for so long because he’s genuinely a reprehensible human being and doesn’t care a lick.

by Philaster on Dec 7, 2011 1:05 AM EST reply actions

I don’t think Shanny is right for that job. As nice as it is to have video explanations, nothing about being a player qualifies someone to be a disciplinarian. I would’ve given the job to someone like Kerry Fraser, who was a long-tenured and respected referee who, after retirement, began to blog for TSN about refereeing and offers great insight into why certain calls are made or flubbed. His interpretation of the rules are consistent and straightforward, and he has decades of experience with how to apply them and adapt to changes in them. Shanahan is, to some extent, learning as he goes.

by lassathrax on Dec 7, 2011 7:42 AM EST up reply actions

Kerry Fraser is a bum and he has always hated the Sabres.

by buzzin on Dec 7, 2011 9:48 AM EST up reply actions

Don’t get me wrong, I was never a big fan of the guy. He made some very controversial calls. But if you have read any of his reports since he retired, it becomes exceedingly clear that he would be better at the disciplinarian job than whoever is currently pulling the strings.

I think the point of hiring Shanahan was to basically use his name and reputation to provide cover because Campbell is perceived as such a joke. The bloom might be off the rose more quickly than anyone thought.

by Philaster on Dec 7, 2011 10:38 AM EST up reply actions

Same mistake TV networks make...

Give important jobs to former sports stars. Brendan Shanahan is as qualified for his discipline job as the terrible NFL announcers like Phil Simms are. They got their jobs for only one reason: they used to play the sport. Shanahan CLEARLY showed favoritism for Lucic. Maybe they’re friends; I don’t know. Lucic was sure laughing it up after his meeting with Shanahan, so they must’ve had a few drinks together or something.
