NHL approves bizarre and biased realingment
Four "conferences", two of seven teams and two of eight teams. The top four in each conference make the playoffs. The two seven-team conferences are in the east and the two eight-team conferences are in the west.
The Northeast Division stays intact and their two new partners, chosen for their geographic closeness...Florida and Tampa Bay.

The five-division realignment I proposed several months ago makes far more geographic sense than this.
Pacific: ANA, LA, SJ, VAN, PHX, COL
Northwest: CGY, EDM, WPG, MIN, STL, CHI
Southeast: DAL, NSH, TB, CAR, WSH, FLA
Midwest: DET, CBJ, PIT, BUF, TOR, OTT
Northeast: MTL, BOS, NYI, NYR, PHI, NJ

Definitely a bizarre setup. Very curious to see how the playoffs are going to work.
Smile.. tomorrow will be worse.
The playoffs are deliberately biased. The two eastern conferences get the best four out of seven, meaning they’’ve got a 57.1% chance of making the playoffs. The two western conferences get the best four out of eight, meaning they’ve got a 50% chance of making the playoffs. Over the long term, that is going to give an economic advantage to the 14 eastern teams.

I agree but...
This shouldn’t last long. Teams will move in the future and the NHL just can’t help itself in playing with the rules every couple of years. I like that you know who you will be playing in the first couple of rounds(mostly) and could play a team up to 13 times in a season. That will create some rivalries!

Re: Playoffs
You’ll end up playing the same 3-5 teams over and over again in the playoffs due to the 2 inter-divisional rounds. It may help to build rivalries, but it will also lead to lots of familiarity. We’ll have a bigger post on the realignment and what it means for Buffalo up in the morning.

This is a lot better than what was rumored a while ago.
For the “East” it’s basically it’s the NE division plus half the SE division and the Atlantic division plus the other half of the SE division.
For the “West” it’s the Pacific division plus half the NW division and the Central plus the other half of the NW division.

It’s certainly good for the Sabres. The only eastern teams that it is not good for are the two Florida teams who just had their travel expenses greatly magnified by being deliberately placed with a group of teams that they are considerably distant from geographically. If the NHL wanted to do this geographically, as they claim to, they would have taken two Atlantic teams and moved them into the Northeast, not two Southeast teams.
However any playoff system that gives a certain group of teams a better chance of making the post season than another group of teams is biased and cannot stand. This playoff system is deliberately biased. It should not be allowed to stand because it gives an economic advantage to the 14 eastern teams. Let the top three teams in each conference get automatic bids with the remaining four teams be the ones with the best records, regardless of conference. The western teams have long claimed that the NHL is institutionally biased against them in media marketing and in other ways. This realignment format gives additional, and credible, support to that claim. The team owners and the NHLPA should shoot this down immediately.

Wait a year and Phoenix will be moving to Quebec and then it will be balanced between East and West.

But under this format, you’ll still have two conferences with seven teams and two with eight…only the identities of the conferences will change. Even if the Phoenix Coyotes become the Quebec Nordiques and move from the Pacific to the Northeast, it won’t matter.
