12 Questions For Christmas - #10
We continue with the '12 Questions For Christmas' series, with question #10 today. Zack Kassian at this point has been with the Buffalo Sabres for nine games now, and has shown us flashes of what we had expected. Tonight will mark his tenth game here, his first against the Toronto Maple Leafs, and quite a few fans will be hoping to see him plastering some white Leafs jerseys against the glass at the FN Center.
Today's question follows after the break.
#9 - How good can Zack Kassian be for the Sabres?
When Kassian first made it up here from the Rochester Amerks on the day after Thanksgiving, it really felt like we finally had something to give thanks for after how brutal November had been. Chris wrote an excellent introductory post about Kassian with a recap of his career so far, definitely a must-read for those unfamiliar with the burly right winger.
In his nine games played for the Sabres, Kassian has three goals and two assists, going -1in that time. He has been averaging 12:41 minutes of ice time per game, and until Ville Leino's injury against the Ottawa Senators, he was on the third line with Leino and Luke Adam. While the winger introduced himself to the League with a couple of huge hits, since then he seems to be focusing more on maintaining pressure on opposing teams with a strong forecheck than trying to lay players out with highlight reel bonecrunchers. He has 15 hits and 12 shots on goal, and also picked up 11 minutes in PIM, which includes a fighting major against Matt Martin of the New York Islanders.
Right now Kassian is being utilized on the checking line, like a Patrick Kaleta upgrade. While there is a need for the Sabres in that position, it would certainly be considered a waste of a 13th overall draft pick if that is all he can be. He definitely has the physical size at 6'3", 215lbs to make a difference in the corners and in front of the net, can skate very well and also has the skill required to turn into a power forward that scores on a consistent basis (how long will we wait for Drew Stafford to eventually become dependable?).
Any forecasts of Kassian's future with the Sabres will have to come with a disclaimer. He has had some disciplinary issues dogging his career, and it would be a shame to see his potential be marred by phonecalls from the offices of Brendan Shanahan. So far he seems to have kept his temper under check without losing the edge to his game. He is expected to be the flagbearer of the next core of the Sabres, marking a departure from the post-lockout small, skilled players and transitioning to the big, aggressive and gritty forwards that will hopefully shed the pushover label the Sabres have earned themselves.
It may be difficult to predict since it has only been nine games for him so far, and let's all be less optimistic and more realistic - where do you see Kassian fitting in on the Sabres lineup? A top three forward opposite Thomas Vanek? Replacing Stafford in the top six? A checking line forward who can score? Or returning to Rochester at some point this season?

If the injury bug continues, then he’s going to be up here long-term and filling in anywhere between Lines 1, 2, and 3. If the team gets healthier, I expect him back in Rochester at some point. Eventually he will be a top-6 forward, hopefully averaging 30+ goals and 70+ points a season. So far, he looks to be the real deal.

I think it would be best for him to go back to Rochester at some point to work on some things, but the future couldn’t be brighter. I’ve been more impressed than I thought I’d be.

I don`t agree with the statement that he is being used in a checking line like a Patrick Kaleta upgrade. He was playing on a line with Leino and Adam who are 2 very offensively gifted players. I have never seen Kassian a replacement to a Kaleta. I have seen him as a replacement for a Stafford or a Boyes.
This is a player with top-six skills with the muscle and toughness that Sabres have never had before. The knock on Kassian since junior has always been about his skating. So far, his skating has been good.
When some of our injured players get back, the Sabres will need to determine where he will get top-six minutes. Either in Buffalo or Rochester. I don`t see him being bumped down on the 4th line replacing a Kaleta or McCormick. It will be someone in the top six.

I’d rate his skating as adequate… i suppose its better than a rating of “Craig Rivet” though.

Is the “rivet” rating above or below an “Andrew Peters” rating?

Agree entirely
Kassian can creatively develop plays in a way that most guys just can’t. Him + Leino and Adam looked like our #2 line, more energetic and more physical than Ennis-Roy-Staffy.
Yeah, Kassian definitely hasn’t been on the checking line. That’s one inaccuracy. Another is referring to Stafford as a power forward. He’s just a forward. Not a sniper, playmaker, or grinder. Just a forward.
This may come as a surprise, but Stafford is actually 6’2", 214lbs and can really throw his weight around. His issue is self-motivation, not size. When he wants to he really motors down the wings shoving d-men out of the way.

He's A Keeper
Frankly, I see no reason to send him back to Rochester; he’s already playing better than guys like Boyes, Kaleta and Ellis. Kassian will only get better and he needs to be playing in a league where is skills can improve as he tries to emulate the older more experienced players. In Rochester, he is a big fish in a little pond where he is only exposed to less talanted players than are present in the NHL.
In my opinion, the Sabres are going nowhere this year so they should give him time during the rest of season to hone his skills, learn to use his physical assests wisely and improve his skating ability. If by some miracle the Sabres get into the playoffs, Kassian’s size and body-crunching checking ability will be a real asset.
I don't think Kassian will ever see Rochester again
I thinks he’s been Sabres second best player to Vanek of late. He plays the wall in his own end like no other winger we have, has great vision of the ice and is an excellent passer/playmaker,is as physical as anyone I’ve seen in the offensive zone, and buries his chances. I think we’ll see more and more of his physical side as time goes on. If I want to watch skating I’ll check out Lame-O swoop around aimlessly. The prospect gurus that predicted he’d contribute nothing to the Sabres this year couldn’t have been more wrong. This kid is exactly what the Sabres need and have lacked come playoff time.

I was beyond excited by his play yesterday.. good vision, forechecking hard, holding off Leafs like they were.. leaves.. haha

Well done.
I am very surprised by his play this season, especially since I was not expecting that he would be able to step in and play that well at the NHL level. There is no way he is going back to the Roch. now…Darcy will make room for this manchild.

Hard to say
It’s very early in Kassian’s career, he does remind me alot of young Todd Bartuzzi.
