Bruins vs. Sabres Recap: Sabres Lose Their First Shootout Of The Season
Even a quarter of the way through the season, there is a chance to accomplish firsts in a season and the Sabres did that with their first shootout loss of the season to the Boston Bruins on Wednesday night. Benoit Pouliot scored the lone goal in the shootout to give the Bruins a 4-3 win, their 10th straight win and tied for the league lead 13th overall.
The Sabres fans and probably the players as well were looking for some blood after Milan Lucic's hit on Ryan Miller in the last Bruins/Sabres matchup and the punishment was delivered within the first two minutes of the game as he and Gaustad squared off. Here is the fight in case you missed it:
After the fight, the Sabres played a quality 65 minute game as they outhit the Bruins 39-24 in the game. Nathan Gerbe led the team with eight hits of his own while Robyn Regher had six. Both teams were able to convert two of their power play opportunities, the Bruins going two for five and the Sabres going two for four.
The Sabres goals were scored by Thomas Vanek, T.J. Brennan, and Christian Ehrhoff while the Bruins goals were scored by Tyler Seguin, Brad Marchand, and Zdeno Chara. Jhonas Enroth made 36 saves in the losing effort while Tim Thomas made 31 saves for the win.
- Brad Boyes played a total of 4:17 before he was injured in the first period with a lower body injury. It appeared that Boyes either suffered an ankle sprain or a knee injury as his leg got caught under a Bruins player as he was going to go for a puck. The Sabres are probably going to have to call another player up from Rochester unless either Cody McCormick or Patrick Kaleta, both of who were scratched with injuries, can make it back to the lineup.
- Luke Adam had even less ice time than the injured Brad Boyes, 3:21 total, but it isn't known if it was due to injury or just benched for bad play. Adam did register a slashing penalty in the first period, played until the 11:00 mark of the second period and then was sat for the rest of the game.
- Welcome to the NHL, TJ Brennan. While he had the least amount of ice time among the defensemen, 13:07 total, he did register his first NHL goal on the only shot that he had in the game.
The Buffalo Sabres will take U.S. Thanksgiving off and then will travel to Columbus to take on the Blue Jackets on Friday night.

That’s the kind of effort I want to see from the Sabres!

as was the 1st period, where there were several bad calls against the Bruins. Some bad calls against both teams during that game
The only questionable call against the Bruins was the Lucic roughing on Roy.

Very Solid Game
Pleasure to watch.
This team has a ways to go b4 it jells & team chemistry gets to where it needs to be. But the pieces are there & philosophy towards more O, less of the dreaded grinding play is easy to see.
That said: 1) Gerbe is the toughest player on the team & they need a 6’3 230lbr with a mean streak like him. 2) Sure #26 is great in front of the net but he’s also the best sniper on the team, put someone else w/good hands in front of the net(28?) on the PP to get hacked like a marked tree & let Vanek freelance around. A 50 goal scorer would be nice again. 3) #72 may be the best O talent since Vanek, how about Making the coaches develop his natural talent instead of sending him to the dog house or trying to turn him another grinding 2 way player. 4) Can we reunite a line of #9, 21 & 26; way more chemistry than trying to force a Pominville Vanek bond.

Goose does not have good hands.
Vanek almost leads the league in PP goals every year. Why would we move him? He’s great at deflections and gathering loose pucks. Also, he and Pominville have the most chemistry between any two players we have; you want to break that up?
most good face off guys have pretty good hands.
plus he is big & tuff for the front of the net.
- would score more sniping than deflecting.
completely disagree Vanek & Pominvill have good chemistry. cant compare it to #9 or 21.

When we finally get rid of Ruff
We will have a chance of developing #72 and the rest of the young guys
Yeah, because Ruff had no part in developing Vanek into the well-rounded, complete player he is...
Save Jenrry Mejia!

I think Lindy has to finally adapt
especially if they are serious about deep playoff aspirations.

I don’t think punishment quite applies. Goose took most of the punches – which was to be expected. I’m glad he stood up, but he got more than he gave.
He gave it his best. Lucic is really tough. always nice to have a hulking player w/the disposition of Gerbe.

Once again, it was really hard to watch a solid effort by the team go to waste after the Sabres crumpled after yet another blown penalty call. The call on Roy, which should have actually gone to Peverley for holding the stick, sucked the life out of the team and gave Boston the game-tying goal which eventually led to their victory.
The Sabres HAVE to start playing better when the officials start playing favorites. They don’t. They have almost always packed it in when it starts happening. They simply can’t do that. They should go into the game knowing that the game isn’t going to be called fairly, knowing that they’re going to get a bogus penalty (or penalties) at crucial times and bear down. I knew as soon as it was Roy heading to the box that if Boston scored that the Sabres would lose. They have got to start taking the game away from the officials, and not the other way around.

I dunno, I’m more irritated they blew two 2 goal leads than happy they “fought” Lucic and Chara. But I had to go back to work when it was 3-1 just after the Brennan goal.

On the plus side, our defense are contributing offensively (seemingly even more than the forwards) in the past week or two.
Also, considering that we were playing against the hottest team in the league without Miller, Myers, Ennis, Weber, McCormick, Kaleta, or Boyes, a tie (essentially) is not bad at all. Let’s all consider how terribly the Sabres from any year before this year would be doing amidst that many injuries. Glad Pegula spent money on depth, that’s the smartest way to begin your 3-year Cup plan IMO.
Happiest I've ever been in defeat.
As said above, we were beaten by the hottest team in the league in an emotional grudge match but took them to the shootout to do it. We were missing many key players (how many of you were praying to see Boyes come back to the bench for the shootout?) while they were missing none. We were down to 11 forwards fairly early on in the game. Reduce that to ten considering Adam got benched for some bad decisions. And the 3rd Bruins goal was on a powerplay which was CLEARLY a terrible call.
A solid effort. Awesome game. best so far of the season.
Agreed
I was also disappointed that Stafford didn’t go fake forhand-backhand top shelf like he always does. That move is money and would have won the shootout if he was deployed earlier. Clearly Stafford is struggling with his confidence since he hasn’t been able to find the back of the net lately, because he looked unsure of himself on that shootout attempt.
