The Good, the Bad, and the Ugly
It’s been a bit of an up and down adventure for the Buffalo Sabres through the first 10 games of the season. Let’s take a look at some GOOD things, BAD things, and things that have been downright UGLY so far in this young season:
The Good
1. The Sabres have a winning record. Granted, our expectations are very high for this team, but a 6-4 record isn’t the end of the world. There are still new pieces on this team clearly having some issues getting used to their new surroundings, but let’s give them some time before we overreact. It might be the manner in which they’ve lost a couple of games which has been more concerning. The team has really had trouble putting together three complete periods the last couple of weeks. At the same time, there’s no reason to think they’re not capable of running off a six game winning streak at any given moment.
2. Robyn Regehr. The man is never going to fill up a stat sheet, but I really like what I’ve seen from Regehr so far this year. He’s your prototypical classic NHL defenseman – big hits, solid defensive plays, not much scoring. You rarely see Regehr make mistakes which is a very comforting sight. There is a calm confidence to his game that has really provided a huge positive for the Sabres so far this season. He has had some absolutely monstrous hits, and watching him back on his heels breaking up an offensive rush is a thing of beauty. His presence has really flown under the radar early on. It’s amazing the impact an elite defenseman can have without registering a single point in ten games.
3. The Vanek/Adam/Pominville line. Duh. I could have listed these three guys separately as three positives. Obviously Vanek is having one of the most dominant starts we’ve seen in a while (8 goals, 7 assists in 10 games), but Pominville has lived up to the captain label so far himself with 14 points of his own. Luke Adam has went through some periods of growing pains lately (especially on the defensive end), but 9 points as still technically a rookie has been a nice surprise for this team. We'll soon find out if Adam's success was a product of his line mates, with the news yesterday that Ville Leino will be getting a shot to center Vanek and Pominville.
4. Increased Toughness. Of course Regehr mentioned above is a large part of this, but guys like Cody McCormick and Patrick Kaleta are picking up from where they left off last year as well. The Sabres were viewed a bit like a "soft" team for a number of years, but this year’s team is really finishing their checks and keeping the opponents on their heels. Regehr has had some Earth-shattering hits already, and Kaleta is…well…being Patrick Kaleta. Last Monday’s game in Tampa Bay was a perfect example. Kaleta came out of the gate like a man possessed, with at least three solid hits in the first two minutes of the game. He didn’t tally a point, but his physical play set the tone for that period, which the Sabres went on to dominate offensively.
The Bad
1. Line Depth and Chemistry. Besides the first line mentioned above, it’s been an adventure for everyone else down the bench in finding some sort of offensive groove. Players that the Sabres really expected to pick up the torch offensively like Tyler Ennis, Ville Leino, Derek Roy, and Drew Stafford just haven’t got it done. When you see those four players, you expect some offensive production, but they have COMBINED for 5 goals, 6 assists. Yes, 11 points total between the four of them (Vanek has 15 alone, Pominville 14). At some point you expect these players to come around, but it needs to happen soon. The first line isn’t going to average a combined 3.8 points per game forever.
2. Ryan Miller’s inconsistency. I am by no means a Ryan Miller hater, and I don’t think we have anything remotely close to a controversy at the goalie position. But you can’t deny that Ryan Miller has been a bit frustrating to watch this year. At one point we’re treated to five consecutive periods of shutout hockey, and the next we’re seeing him let in goals we’re not used to seeing Ryan Miller let by as the game slips away. I really hate the term "soft goal", but Miller has definitely let in some "questionable" goals. Granted, this isn’t always on the goaltender, as the defense in front of Miller has had some serious mental lapses on a few, but the fact that people are even bringing up the topic of Jhonas Enroth as the #1 lets you know the Buffalo fans are used to more superior play from Miller. He’s still riding a .930 SV% and 2.14 GAA in his first 8 games (4-4), which would both be the best of his career if the season ended today, so maybe we should take it easy on the guy. I think the play of Enroth will also help elevate Miller’s game over time. A little competition never hurt anyone.
The Ugly
1. Tyler Myers. After signing the big extension, Myers has really struggled to start the year. Zero goals, three points, +1, and a slew of bad defensive decisions to go along with it. At times he looks hesitant to insert himself into the play on the offensive end. Perhaps the pressure of a big contract is a bit much for young Myers to handle, or maybe he just hasn’t hit his stride yet. I’m still confident Myers will round into the player we expect him to be, but at this point early in the season his play has been a disappointment. The more time he can spend around vets like Regehr and Ehrhoff though, the more we should see his development begin to take hold. Yes, it’s his third season, but he’s still only 21 years old.
2. Christian Ehrhoff. It hasn’t helped that Ehrhoff, signed in large part due to his offensive savvy, has not filled the void Myers has left at the other end of the ice. Ehrhoff leads the team in ice time (avg 24:33 per game) but sits at -6 on the season. The Sabres have a +7 goal differential for the season, meaning they are +13 in total when Ehrhoff is NOT on the ice. Those are some staggering statistics and really speak for themselves. Right now, he’s not really getting it done at either end of the ice.
3. Ville Leino. After writing a profile on Leino a couple weeks ago, I almost feel like I cursed him. Leino has one goal, one assist, and a -4 to go along with it. The experiment with Leino at center was also momentarily scrapped after his line with Boyes and Ennis was disappointing to start the year. He looks lost bringing the puck into the zone, and seems to commit at least two face-palming turnovers a game. Maybe Lindy Ruff needs to give Leino a bit of a push by moving him up the depth chart a bit, like he did with Brad Boyes on the power play. We'll find out when Leino gets his shot tomorrow, teaming up with Vanek and Pominville on the Sabres' explosive first line. But if that doesn't work, once Johen Hecht and Tyler Ennis are ready to come back, could Leino find himself as the odd man out? Something that seemed so unlikely just a week ago actually may be closer to reality than we think.
Overall, I still expect the Sabres to get it together and be one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference throughout the entire season. There would be no better time to start than tomorrow night on home ice against the Flyers; a game that promises to be very intense, very exciting, and probably a bit dirty as well. Probably the biggest game of the year so far, in fact.
If you have any "good/bad/ugly" items of your own so far this season...feel free to add on below.

I Would Agree...
With all of these, but would add the play of the Kaleta and Goose to the GOOD. Also, I think Staff has played fairly well, but his line mates haven’t been any help. Oh, Adam and Enroth has been great additions.
Would add the PP to the BAD side of the ledger – for long spells of the early season, they look lost…out of position (again), unable to get the puck to the front of the net, and unwilling to dump and chase when teams are stacking on the blue line.
As for the UGLY, well…Jochen Hecht is no George Clooney. Oh, and Roy’s inability to finish hasn’t been pretty either.
Can't give Myers an ugly
He leads the team in blocked shots. He has had some brutal turnovers (tied with Erhoff) and small quick forecheckers have been a problem. But I have seen him being physical in the corners and not afraid to pinch/join the rush. His penalty killing alone keeps him out of ugly
The Hoff 20 goal differential is not quite correct. He has 2 A on the PP and he may have been on the ice for other PP scores. However, the number is probably more like 14 or 15 and it is still ugly. Just like the two shorties when he was out there. He has also had a physical edge to his game and hopefully overall play will improve.
Regehr has been beyond good leads in hits, second in blocks and great on the PK.
I too would add the 2.5 men line to the good category (just be sure to shut your yap in the third period Nathan!).
Go Sabres!
The ugly with Myers has been indecisiveness. Too many times he’s held onto the puck in the Buffalo end, seemingly unsure of where to go with it. In his rookie year, and the second half of last year/playoffs, he’d get the puck and move it right away, almost always picking the right option. I think the ‘old’ Myers will be back, but sooner sure would be better than later.
In Gerbe's defense
That was the worst tripping/hooking call I’ve ever seen. The ref has to keep a cooler head in that situation as well, and not be so quick to give him the extra 2. What a joke that penalty was.

Makes me nervous
I said it last year and I still feel the same way this year: everytime Myers touches the puck, I get nervous. Unfortunately, he reminds me of Max – unless he is acutually shooting the puck, he doesn’t appear to know what to do with it.
The good....
The Sabres penalty killing has been outstanding thus far.

Good point. Not sure how that didn’t make the Good list. 2nd in the league giving up only 3 goals in 37 opportunities against.

A few things
The Good:
1. Isn’t this the most important thing? We have a winning record. For all the bads or uglies on this list, we are still winning games. I’d rather be talking about how we can improve on our winning ways, then talking about how to start winning.
2. Robyn Regehr was the oft-overlooked addition in the offseason due to the large contracts given to Leino and Ehrhoff, but is this guy not the beast on the back end that we have been looking for since Jay McKee left? He is everything that Lydman and Rivet were and were not in a good way. He is so level-headed and sound on the back end it is staggering. Oh, and whenever he has the chance he punishes someone into the boards, gotta love that. He hits to hurt (not injure) the other team.
3. What more needs to be said about this line. Thomas Vanek has resurrected himself early on this season, Pominville has as well (and been mighty “captainly” doing it, IMO) and Luke Adam has been everything we were hoping for (ok maybe a little less, he has failed to finish on several occasions). At times it seems like this team is just in cruise control waiting for the next Vanek masterpiece to unfold and bring them out of their funk.
The Bad:
1. You failed, I think, to mention the great play put in by the 2 1/2 men line. They have paced our team on the forecheck, physical play and penalty killing (Goose and Kaleta are always 1st out on the PK, and Gerbe usually finishes it off). The other lines have struggled a bit, but Ellis, McC, and Boyes have been solid the last week or so, and Roy has stepped up his game, even though he has failed to finish several times.
2. Miller has been hot and cold, that’s a given. But if all we had to worry about was Ryan Miller, then I’d say we don’t have any worries. He will be fine.
The Ugly:
1. I think you hit on it with the fact that he is still young. For all that he’s marveled for being with his size, he also struggles with it. He makes most of his mistakes when he backs himself into a position where he cannot use his reach. He has been a young Chara this season so far. I think he is over-thinking, much like at the beginning of last year, and when he gets back to just reacting and playing his game, he will be ok. But it has been ugly to watch at times….
2. You confuse individual +/- with team goal differential. Short-handed goals count against a player’s +/-, but PP goals do not count for, or against it. Team goal differential counts all goals, for and against. So saying that the team is +13 when he is not on the ice is statistically inaccurate. He has 2 PP assists (according to Yahoo Sports) and has been on the ice for probably 2 other PP goals (the team has 7 total, 3 from Vanek, 2 from Pominville and 1 each from Boyes and Stafford. Simply assuming that since Ehrhoff plays on the first unit with Pominville and Vanek, that Ehrhoff was on the ice for at least 4 of their goals, assisting on 2 of them), therefore the team’s goal differential when he is on the ice gets a boost of 4 goals. This does give perspective because if PP goals were counted for/against individual +/- he would likely have a better +/- rating (even knowing that PP goals against aren’t factored in, but how many of the 3 could he have been on the ice for? At most 3, which still puts him +1 in PP +/-). Ehrhoff hasn’t been lights out, but he certainly hasn’t been as bad, or ugly, as you make it seem.
3. Nothing to say about Leino, except that we shouldn’t make snap judgements after 10 games. He is new to the team and I think we should all give him the benefit of more than 10 games before crucifying him (not that you are). I’m not a Leino fan and wasn’t a fan of the signing either, but I think he is getting a bad rap around Buffalo after only 10 games into a long contract.

Yes
I admit I did not take the PP numbers into account as you detailed and explained very well (great overall comment by the way, really appreciate the feedback), but even factoring that in, there is no doubt Ehrhoff has been a disappointment thus far. Again, only a 10 game sample so far, but that’s all I have to work with.
I agree (as someone else mentioned above) that I left out the great play of the 2.5 men line, but that point was more centered on offensive production of the 2-4th lines in general. I did allude to the toughness factor of the team as a positive, which I would say this line has been a huge part of.
Thanks again for the detailed and thoughtful response.

Thanks
I was gonna make it quick but it just kept going….
Agreed Ehrhoff has been a little disappointing in his numbers, but when I watch him play, I’m not disappointed. This dude can play, and he clearly has upgraded our defense corps.
I realize you couldn’t ramble on for days about every aspect of the team, but you did call out the non-VAP lines, and the 2.5 men are in that group. Production or not, they are right up there with VAP for best line on the season, IMO, for their high level of play.

I know what miller's problem is
Its his wife. He is getting to much nooki and getting tired and soft on game days. His inconsistency really picked up when they started dating and got worse when married. But if I was him I would be having the same problem. He has a super hot wife.

Good to see someone else make the same conclusion I have made. I might add, however, she is an actress who works in the L.A. area and, therefore, is likely to be a Libratard. I think Miller’s problem is that the soft on everything Libratardism is rubbing off on him. That is, in my opionion, where the soft goals are coming from. Just say’n.
Seems to me that Miller sometimes has trouble following the puck behind the net. A lot of times it appears that he “loses” it until it ends up in front of the net again. I think the first goal against Florida is a prime example. While he was in the right position, he didn’t seem to be ready for the shot.
So, in review
Miller stinks because he’s a liberal? Am I getting this right???

6 and 4 without much of anythign from Roy or Ennis.
I’ll take it.

Overall
Right now the Sabres are slightly better than a mediocre team. It just seems that there is little continuity (flow) in their game. Part of this is due to fact that there are three (actually four if you count Adam) new players in the mix. Regehr has adjusted well to his new team. Ehrhoff has adjusted to a lesser extent and Leino has not adjusted at all to his new team. After considering all of the possible reasons for this situation, I have come to the conclusion that the principal problem with Sabres is the coaching staff. Ruff and his staff are just not doing their jobs. I think Ruff is burned out and bereft of new ideas. The optimism and enthusiam that was present on this team at the beginning of the season in Europe seems to have evaporated like a lump of dry ice on a hot day. It may be that the players are trying too hard, but it is up to the coaching staff to keep them focused and dedicated to winning. They have lost too many leads and not been able to come back unlike what the really elite teams do. It’s early in the season, but I am really concerned that the mindset that has characterized this team for the past two weeks will last for a protracted period of time. By the end of November, we should know whether we have a good average team, a better than average team or a much better than average team.
Don’t forget Gragnani. He played only at the tail end of the season. In my opinion, he is practically a new player as well.
And as far as Ruff goes, I’ll keep it simple and just say: agree to disagree.
You nailed it on this one though:
By the end of November, we should know whether we have a good average team, a better than average team or a much better than average team.

How dare Ruff and co. not force players into comfort with strangers in a new system in a new city!!1!
I love how people form these bend over backwards theories about how Ruff needs to go when they aren’t even at practice, let alone in his office.
I am really concerned that the mindset that has characterized this team for the past two weeksWhat mindset is that? DO you talk to the players often? Are you in the lockerrom?

No need to be at practice
One does not need to be at practice to observe Ruff mismange his players during the games. One only needs to watch as he mismatches his lines, fails to call time outs at crucial monments and fails to challenge his charges to excel through adversity. I for one am tired of this excuses that we didn’t to this or didn’t do that. He should be sitting Myers in the broadcast booth where he might learn something watching Regehr and others., and letting Weber play – he certainly can’t play any worse than Myers.
Are you serious?
What can Tyler Myers learn from watching a game in the press box? Or more importantly, what can he learn from Regehr by not playing, that he can’t by just reviewing film? Myers needs to play out of his slump, not sit down. If we sat Myers, we would be the laughing stock of the NHL….you cannot be serious Geo.
How has he mismanaged his lines???? Throughout the season, 3/4 of our lines have been playing well. Vanek’s line is on fire, Goose’s line is playing at a similarly high level (with a little less finishing, but frankly they only have one player on their line that could even be considered a high level finisher), and the 4th line has grinded out games in the corners, as they should. So, Ruff has taken all his new players, and has created 3 good lines, and 1 is underproducing, so that’s mismanaging? Ha.
What are they supposed to say after a loss when the press asks them what happened? Lie? Plead the 5th? They answer the questions posed to them, but I guess that isn’t good enough for you, cause they are nothing but excuses, right? Get off your high horse, Geo. Give us some examples of why Ruff should be fired, hopefully with a better one than “because Myers should be benched”…..

Seriously? This is WAY to early in the year for any of this kind of talk. We are just over 12% of the way through the season…not to mention that all the claims you make could not be substantiated with any evidence whatsoever. Honestly, what would our record need to be for you to be happy? 10-0? 8-2? We are one game off of being 7-3…would that have been acceptable?
It is really fine to have an opinion, but when you back it up with a small sample size of data that is mainly subjective, it makes other people who read it quite upset.

Weber should have been playing from the start he’s a better younger version of regher. He was one of the best blueliners last season and frankly gragnani is a complete waste right now , 0 PP pts ,tied for the team lowest SOG and he turns the puck over constantly . Ruff insisted he was needed for the PP but I don’t even notice him out there and he’s hurting us in other areas. We need more than one defensive defense which is more than apparent .. Over 40 SOG by the jackets!? Embarassing even with getting the win in that game and that would’ve been iffy if it wasn’t for enroth and cjb’s horrific PK
