Sabres Week 4 Stock Up/Stock Down

BUFFALO, NY - OCTOBER 29: Members of the Florida Panthers celebrate their win as Jason Pominville #29 of the Buffalo Sabres leaves the ice during their NHL game at First Niagara Center October 29, 2011 in Buffalo, New York. (Photo by Dave Sandford/Getty Images)

The Buffalo Sabres had their most disappointing week thus far in the season, losing two of their three games during the week. Their lone win came against the lowly Columbus Blue Jackets.

Star-divide

Player Status Description
Luke Adam http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png (0 goals, 3 assists, 3 points, Even) Adam has slowed down from his first week performance but is still performing pretty well with Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville. The question is whether he can perform with someone else that isn't Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominvillle.
Brad Boyes http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (2 goals, 3 assists, 5 points, Even) Boyes was moved up to the first power play unit to try and spark some offense out of Boyes. That confidence garnered 5 points in three games and more time on the power play
Christian Ehrhoff http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png (0 goals, 2 assists, 2 points, -2) Ehrhoff has quieted down over the past couple of weeks in the scoring department and his defensive abilities aren't making up for those offensive shortfalls.
Tyler Ennis http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217725/cross.png (Did not play, Injured) Ennis is still week to week and probably won't return this week.
Paul Gaustad http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png (0 goals, 1 assists, 1 points, +1) Gaustad has created some offensive opportunities with Gerbe and Kaleta this season and quietly has had a decent season this year.
Nathan Gerbe http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (1 goals, 1 assists, 2 points, 4 PIM, +2) Nathan Gerbe has had a better week this week with an added goal and assist.
Marc-Andre Gragnani http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217737/down.png (0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, Even) Well, at least Gragnani was an even this week. While still young, Gragnani hasn't produced offensively lately and his defensive miscues are still showing.
Patrick Kaleta http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (1 goals, 0 assists, 1 points, 14 PIM, +1) Kaleta's style of play hasn't changed in the six years and his thundering checks and fists this week changed the tide of games for the Sabres.
Ville Leino http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217737/down.png (0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, -3) Ladies and gentleman, our newest Tim Connolly. With only six years left to gripe about.
Jordon Leopold http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png (0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, 2 PIM, -1) Leopold has been quiet this season with only two points. Unfortunately, none of these points happened this season.
Cody McCormick http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (0 goals, 1 assists, 1 points, 7 PIM, Even) McCormick has been alright this season and was apart of Matt Ellis' first goal of the season.
Tyler Myers http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217737/down.png (0 goals, 1 assists, 1 points, 2 PIM, -1) Myers has struggled hardcore this season and just hasn't looked great in either the offensive or defensive zones.
Jason Pominville http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (3 goals, 2 assists, 5 points, -1) Thomas Vanek and Jason Pominville probably should never be separated this season because they are still working so well together.
Robyn Regehr http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, 4 PIM, Even) As much as a line of zero points and four penalty minutes doesn't look all that promising, show me one person who doesn't like what Regehr has done for this team this season and I'll show you someone who is slightly crazy.
Derek Roy http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217737/down.png (0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, -3) We know that there is an injury that has been nagging Roy since the start of the season and his offensive output has struggled because of it.
Andrej Sekera http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, 6 PIM, Even) Andrej Sekera has the best plus/minus on this team this season. Most of that was playing with Marc-Andre Gragnani. Let that sink in for a while.
Drew Stafford http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png (0 goals, 0 assists, 0 points, 6 PIM, -2) While Stafford and Roy were quiet this season, Stafford gets the neutral minus because we expect more out of Roy.
Thomas Vanek http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (2 goals, 3 assists, 5 points, 2 PIM, +1) Thomas Vanek is having a career year and it doesn't seem to be slowing down.
Matt Ellis http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (0 goals, 1 assists, 1 points, Even) The Matt Ellis principle still applies. Well it does if you don't include that game against Florida.
Jochen Hecht http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217725/cross.png (Did not play, injured) It's not looking good for Hecht to return anytime soon.
Mike Weber http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217757/dash.png (Did not play, scratched) When exactly is a good time to get Weber in the lineup? April 8th?
Ryan Miller http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217737/down.png

(118:08 played, 3.56 GAA, .881 SV%) So this exactly wasn't Miller's best week. Does that mean that the Sabres should trade him for sixty cents on the dollar? No, but it might lend to playing Enroth a little more.

Jhonas Enroth http://assets.sbnation.com/assets/217733/up.png (60:00 played, 2.00 GAA, .953 SV%) He looked relatively impressive against a team that has only won one game this season.

The Sabres moved Roy to the point on th 1st power play. Grags was not on either the 1st or 2nd powerplay. Does this mean that Weber will get his chance tomorrow night and Grags sits?

Hopefully. I like Grags but I think they should be rotating more than once every 10 games.

TBN says Hecht is injured reserve...

does this give the Sabres some cap relief in the short term?

Go Sabres!

Yes….it gives us additional cap space above what Hecht’s contract was. In other words, add $3.5 mil to the current cap limit (~$64.7 million), and that would be our new cap limit (or $68.2 million). What this also means is that we must get below the regular cap number once Hecht comes back….if we don’t, we get a cap penalty.

Vanek needs a bigger green arrow.

I dont think his stock can get any higher.
