LOVE/HATE...by a dedicated Swords fan

Let me start by saying that I believe I am the biggest Sabres fan there is. I have not missed a Sabres game, in person or on TV, in probably 15 years. I work in an industry that runs 24/7, and have worked every god forsaken shift known to man, and still found a way to watch every single game (thank you VHS and DVR). I have grown up cheering for the likes of Sabre stars such as Gil Perreault, Danny Gare, Mike Foligno, Tom Barrasso, Christian Ruuttu and Dominik Hasek, through some forgotten Sabre gems like John VanBoxmeer, Paul Cyr, Hannu Virta, John Tucker and Dave Snuggerud, right on through Drury/Briere and so on. I am/have been with them thru thick and thin, good/bad or otherwise for over 30 years. Hockey is the greatest game on earth, and I eat, drink and crap Blue and Gold. I am justifying my love for this team because I will no doubt be questioned on it after you read what I have on my mind.

This organization, as it stands right now, is a laughing stock, stinks to high hell, and should be embarrassed by the product they put out on the ice and the apathy they have off it. The last straw for me was the laugher on Long Island on Saturday. They were beaten by a glorified AHL team with an injury prone goaltender who gives out rebounds like hookers give out STD's. They were outworked by players who wouldn't be in the lineup on any other team in the league.

Is this essentially the same team that won their division last year, and emerged as a number 3 seed? On paper, yes. Take away Lydman and Tallinder and add Leopold, Morrisonn and Weber and it's a wash. Really, this defense should be BETTER, not worse. They are THE worst team in their own end I have seen in a long time. What ever happened to the simple play of chipping it out off the glass? Instead, they ALL think they're going to skate it out, reverse the play or make some ridiculous pass through 8 sets of skates that even Maxim A-force-the-pass-ov wouldn't have attempted. The D-men all look like they've never played the position before, and the forwards don't come back and help. Is Ruff telling them not to chip it out because he thinks they're going to be this big, bad Detroit Red Wing, puck possession type of team? Ruff should compare Detroit's roster with ours, and re-evaluate his style of play, because it ain't even close. The passing on this team is atrocious. They are consistently outworked and outhustled. Some of these guys play scared (Hecht!). The power play is a joke and I can't begin to wonder why Brian McCutcheon still has a job.

If you don't have the personnel to play a certain style, then you better find another style. (I am talking to you too, Chan Gailey!)

Don't think Mr. Regier is getting away with out blame. He is the one who: gave out some of these ridiculous contracts like Connolly $4.5/per, Pominville $5.3/per, Gaustad $2.3/per and Hecht $3.5/per, traded for a washed up defacto captain in Rivet, who skates like he's in quicksand, and in fact it was his career that was sinking when we traded 2 draft picks for him, and gives Lindy 2 lines of soft, lazy, heartless and uninspired "scoring" forwards, and 2 lines of slow, talentless plumbers. Now, don't get me wrong. We DO have some players (and plumbers) that are keepers (Miller-hung out to dry this year, Myers-he'll be fine, Vanek-not his fault he has that contract, Roy-we miss you more than you know, Leopold-great pickup, Weber-meet the new Rhett Warrener, McCormick-works his ass off, Ennis-starting to play smarter, Stafford-it's about time, Montador-deserves a contract extension, and Kaleta-if he could stay healthy). But we also have some players (Tin Man Connolly, Gaustiff, Butler, Grier, Gerbe, Niedermayer and Pominville) that need to go. Somewhere. Anywhere. Darcy's inability/refusal to pull the trigger on a deal, ANY deal, to shake awake the half year slumber this team is in, is maddening. Dude, "hello, is there anybody in there? Just nod if you can hear me..." Sometimes a trade for the sake of a trade is a GOOD thing. I'll trade you my overpayed slacker for yours, and maybe, just maybe, a change of scenery for both these players is just what the doctor ordered. At the very least, it jolts awake the rest of these lazy bastards from their zombie-like existence, and they start playing hockey like MEN. I am so damn sick of hearing the bullshit lip service, verbal diarrhea that spews from their mouths after every game they are outworked in. "Oh, we have to stop giving points away", "Oh, we can't keep letting these games get away", "Oh, we have to do this, or that, or who, what, where, when, blah, blah, blah-bitty-blah!!!!!" Well, guess what? DO IT THEN!!! DO WHAT YOU KEEP SAYING YOU HAVE TO DO, or shut the hell up. This team is a bunch of walking, talking cliches.

Larry Quinn is almost a memory, thank the Lord, so I won't waste any more space on that douche.

This season is all but finished and they are on the fast track to a top 5 pick. Maybe it's what we need. Who knows. One thing I do know is that come July 1st, the management (whoever that may be) will have $25 million to spend. Let's hope the next GM doesn't mismanage the owner's funds like the current (mis)management team has. And let's hope by getting Regier and Quinn outta here, that free agents will actually want to play here.

I will still watch the games. I will ALWAYS pull for the team/organization, because I know one of these groups of players, one of these years, will bring us a Cup. I just cannot LIKE the current state of this hockey club as a whole. Let's hope the new ownership lives up to the hype, and brings us back to the top...

...so I can say "good riddance to the 2010-11 Buffalo Sabres".

Good rant.

I feel pretty much the same way, although I still have some playoff optimism for this year. I’ve been a fairly hard core Sabres fan since 2008 when I got DSL and started being able to follow them (I don’t have TV), but I can see where you’re coming from. Even in the few years since then I can see how up-and-down this team is. Thanks for posting this, I feel it pretty much sums up Buffalo sports in general. Go Sabres!

In regards to Hecht, Gaustad, Connolly and Pomminville.
Pommers is the only one with value on their current contract. And even then, I can’t see many teams biting due to his contract. As far as the other 3, I can’t imagine ANYBODY wanting to take those guys and their current contracts. So how is Regier gonna trade what nobody wants? He would have to package them with guys like Ennis/Stafford/Gerbe/Roy etc. So is that worth it to you?
Sacrifice Roy to get rid of Gaustad?
Hect and Gaustad would be fine with me if they were paid appropriately. Both guys a valuable players, they are simply overpaid, not exactly their fault. Pommers? I’m actually fine with his contract, its a little overpriced but he is one of our top PK guys, a sold PP point man and nice 2 way player at even strength.
All I ever hear is “get rid of connolly! get rid of Hecht!”, but Regier made the initial mistake of overpaying them, and now he simply isn’t able to get rid of them even if he wanted to because all of the other GM’s know a thing or 2 about hockey and can see that they aren’t worth their contracts. The only thing thats gonna happen is their contracts will expire and they will be resigned at a more appropriate price OR they will move on, but you may as well get used to seeing them as a Sabre for the time being.

If Roy/Gaustad brings me an Eric Staal or a Mike Richards, then yes, I would sacrifice Roy. But it probably wouldn’t. The only thing Goose has going for him is that he is a great, if not the greatest, faceoff man in the league. Other GM’s could find value in that.

You hit it on the head with the comment about Hecht and Goose. If they were paid accordingly, I probably wouldn’t have a problem with them either.

Frustration finally hit me, that’s all.

Here here

We all love the Sabres or else we wouldn’t be on this site, but we also need to be honest. Changes need to be made. Even if we make the playoffs, we’ll squeak in and be bounced after round 1. I can hear the excuses: Roy was lost for most of the season, Stafford couldn’t stay healthy, etc.

The fact is the defense has played abysmally at times, and the roster is loaded with dead weight. I don’t think it’s just a matter of bloated contracts. Connolly is now supposed to be our top line center? And it isn’t just contracts that are inflated, we inflate the value and ability of players like Connolly and Gaustad and Rivet.

It’s not dire, but I’m looking forward to Pegula taking over and bringing in a new GM. And this isn’t to trash Regier. He did a lot of good for Buffalo under difficult circumstances at times, but they’ve enjoyed a great deal of success with him at the helm. Too many mistakes have been made over the past few years, however, and we see where this has led.

dead on...

We feel like Larry Quinn is peeing on our upraised faces off the balcony @ HSBC and asking us how we like the April showers.
Enough already. Wait till Darcy trades a #2 pick for a nameless hack on a Western Conference 3rd line to position us for a big push for the playoffs…off comes his head, and not a moment too soon. Mr. P will have a fit!
HAS Drew found his head after a 5 year, lackluster effort to date? Or is the reality of job prospects for a 26 yr old with a degree in Guitar Hero from the Ivy League annex at North Dakota setting in? I mean is CYA contract year attitude happening?
He isnt real mean or physical…not that big though tall…cant fight to save his life…why is he seen as a power forward? Good hands and a quick release to be sure, but is he for real? We already jumped the gun on Connolly and pominville, moneywise, and have to be careful.
And now…is he FRAGILE? Seems to be going out with some ailment or other regularly enough to give pause.I’d offer him a Ted Nolan deal…ONE year at say 3 million, prove to us you arent a flash in the pan and fragile as well, then at the Allstar break next year we’ll hold the coronation and a new deal.
One more thing…can we get a coach who uses a backup goalie? Who will make Ennis and Gerbe into Centers where there small size and elusiveness is an advantage?Or doesnt smother offensive talent in a blizzard of lineup changes?
Clarke Mcarthur said in a TBN article that the reason he is having a personall best year is…wait for it…playing with the same guys on one line for an extended period…Earth to Lindy…before its too late…

Only 44 games left!

I have been waiting for this offseason for a few years now… FINALLY Connolly is gone (if the we do resign Connolly, I will seriously question everything I know). Unlike other seasons of dropping off important players without replacing them, we MUST replace Connolly. Considering Connolly is being paid around 5m, we can afford a top noch center and move roy down to the second line where he belongs.

However, we have been here before…Will we ignore the fact that we are losing another decent player and expect Ennis to continue his current role AND fill in for Connolly?

haha. Posts like this make no sense...

In the matter of four sentences you manange to admit youve been waiting for a few years for us to get rid of this horrible hockey player in Tim Connolly, then question the team to see if they can replace this now “decent” player.

Is Tim Connolly a top center, no… and may be a little over-paid (but if someone offers you that money, you dont look at them and tell you to offer me less)… but the dude is still a good player and being a good 2nd line center is nothing to sneeze at. Hes not going to score 30 goals and have 70 assists. But he had a very good year last year.

I understand the frustration with him… I really do, and I dont make myself out to bea Connolly apologist, but get off his back a little bit. So many of you act like the guy is the pleague. If he leaves via FA this offseason, which is likely, and we dont replace him… or we replace him with someone that doesnt live up to expectations, I dont want to hear a single person complain about it… because guess what, ITS WHAT YOU ASKED FOR.

Lets Go Buff a lo!!!
