Remaining UFAs
With training camp only a few weeks away, I wanted to get some opinions on the remaining UFAs that you'd like the Sabres to try to sign.
Here's the most up to date list I could find to generate some discussion: http://www.mynhltraderumors.com/2010/06/18/2010-nhl-unrestricted-free-agents/
I hoped Regier would make a strong push to bring in Stempniak, but with him signing in Phoenix the pickings have become rather slim on the UFA forward front. One player I'd still look at is Bill Guerin. He's won the Stanley Cup twice, would bring additional leadership to the locker room, and had 45 points last year. Not too shabby.
So with that being said, what UFA forwards or defensemen would you like the Sabres to target prior to camp?!

Here is a more official list: http://www.nhl.com/ice/page.htm?id=63234
I don’t want Darcy to bother signing another free agent unless he can find a young, talented top 6 winger at a bargain price, which is simply not going to happen with this list. I’m pretty happy with the current roster, given the circumstances.

I’m actually pretty optimistic about the Roster for this season, More so than I was at the beginning of last year.

Yeah, we get a new look on defense pairings, we still have Miller in his prime, and you never know when our offense is going to start catching fire, but there’s always Lindy to mix things up and get the team out of a funk. A few younger guys who can really step up and make a difference doesn’t hurt either.
I think Shaone Morrisonn will help a lot...
Sounds like Mike Green exploded once they became defence partners. Him and Myers together….might get Tyler to 60 points this year. Now that is NASTY!
I’m more excited to see what Tyler Ennis will do this year. I’ve been waiting for him to be a regular since I first heard about his speed and playmaking abilities after he was drafted.

Im excited for this roster too. Our D pairings are something Im looking forward. We have a lot of potential back there on the blue line… just gotta put it all together this year (cough cough). I see Myers having an even better year, offensively.
Our offense will probably struggle a little bit… but if we can get Vanek back to his 40 goals per year, healthy Connolly, Roy, a full season from Ennis and some players stepping up… I think we could be in for a good ride this year.
Where else would you rather be?
Beyond Jason Pominville, their RW’s are weak, skill-wise. Stafford should be on the 1st train out of here. Grier is perfect for our 3rd line, and Kaleta showed some skill last year, and is turning into more of a REAL hockey player every year. Guerin or Nolan would be welcomed with open arms, and either would add toughness, leadership and a bit of skill to a line with Roy & Vanek. Pominville could then be dropped down with the Tin man and Ennis.
However, if the roster stays the same, and with Regier at the helm we shouldn’t expect anything different, why not promote Kaleta up to the 2nd line with Connolly and Ennis. The kid showed some skill last year putting in 10 goals in 55 games, which would have put him on pace for around 15 goals. That still isn’t an ideal situation, but I would reward the kid for the 100% effort he puts forth every night. I bet he could pop 15 goals in playing with Ennis and Connolly, and would open up some ice for those 2 skill guys as well.
But, I still would prefer Guerin or Nolan.
Guerin and Nolan are old, slow, and expensive. I’m not a big fan of signing players in their declining years. One or two for leadership is more than enough (Grier, Rivet). Lets hope Ennis can step up and fill the top 6 winger role we need. Or maybe even Stafford (don’t forget he still has potential to bounce back).
