Buffalo Sabres Put Tim Kennedy On Waivers
Four days after re-signing Tim Kennedy, the Buffalo Sabres have placed the young forward on waivers. An arbitrator awarded him a $1 million contract and the rules state that if the person is presented with a deal under $1.6 million, the club cannot refuse it.
This explains why the team handled the situation by re-signing him first. A buy-out will be the most likely of scenarios if he clears the waiver wire.

We needed hope and (roster) change. Not hope and more of the same (minor leaguers).

wtf
This all seems rather odd to me. Surely Kennedy would garner something in return on the trade market rather than a waiver claim or an outright release, right? Maybe I’m I’m off-base here. Maybe they did not want to give him a new deal and were frustrated with his award or even the whole arbitration process? Seems strange especially with darcy’s love for his home-growns.

I’m with you. We couldn’t trade him for anything? We gave up a 2nd round pick for Raffi Torres and we’re waiving Tim Kennedy because he makes $1 million? I don’t get it at all.
Can't trade him.
I believe there’s a clause in the CBA where you can’t trade a player until the following January if the won an abritration award. This is the only short term way to get out of an arbitration award of under $1.6 million, waive him, and hope someone else picks up his salary.
Something must of went wrong behind the scenes with the Sabres and Kennedy. Would love to know the real reason and not the PC stuff we’ll hear from Darcy tomorrow. Very strange news.
Thanks. I didn’t know that. That blows. I would also like to know what’s going on here behind the scenes.

ennis stepping up and gerbe both are cheaper better players. kennedy is expendable.
time to ring that championship bell
I only wanted him because i figured he was more likely to keep drew stafford off the top line than any of our other players, though i wouldn’t mind gerbe or whoever as a replacement, i just feel that it was either him or stafford on the top line.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon.

i agree. i liked when vanek roy and kennedy had that stretch together. management could be buying out his contract because he doesn’t have a shot to play here and they figure they will give him a chance to be picked up by another team before the start of the season. so far how does the roster look?
time to ring that championship bell
He’s in contention with random portland pirates members(Gerbe, other younger players) for the last roster slot, assuming none of us manage to make Drew Stafford “vanish”.
Seeing if someone else will take him without us having to buy him out is about as plausible as actually buying him out.

dare i say, buffalo is freeing up cap room for kovalchuk. its going to take more than 1mil. how much room do we have?
time to ring that championship bell
The amount of money they probably would have free is in the 4-5M range, as they won’t be spending to the cap most likely.

Yeah, not like we ever spend to the cap… wait where did we end up last year again? We have plenty of time to still spend to the cap, or close enough to it to trade for a soon to be UFA at the deadline like we seem to like to do. I’m not saying we WILL spend to the cap, but it certainly isn’t given that we won’t.
Also, let us all keep in mind, Stafford will be a UFA next year (I think). Trading him now before he plays awesome for a season would be a BAD idea. He will be good this year, thats how lazy players make big bucks.
Just typical cheap azz sabres
This was not a move to free up cap space to sign an FA. This was a move to save money. Plain and simple.
When they do buy him out it will save them $900,00 against the cap. Of course that roster spot will have to be filled by somebody, making just over half that. So it saves them $300,000 against the cap.
If I am to understand Darcy…Kennedy was a good fit at 800K but not a million?
Remember when Darcy was crying a few months back and saying the goal was to win the cup. Too many idiots believed him.
This only saves them money if he doesn’t clear waivers, unless I’m mistaken. I think it is safe to say this has absolutely nothing to do with saving money, given we are talking about less than $200,000. We aren’t even close to the cap right now so no idea why you are going on about saving room against the cap unless you think they are going to spend to the cap but given the rest of your comment I find that unlikely.
It seems fairly obvious to me something came up in arbitration that made them not want him in the dressing room this season. That or… since they can’t trade him now (not till January), they have a good faith deal set up with someone high on the waivers list (Toronto?) where they will claim him off waivers and give us a more lopsided deal after. But, who would we want from Toronto? Kaberle? If that were the case then the Morrison signing sure is odd. Apart from Kaberle??? Maybe someone from Edmonton? I don’t know, they seem like an unlikely team to want Kennedy. Really, everyone seems like an unlikely team to want Kennedy and I won’t be shocked if he clears waivers. He just isn’t that great.
Easy now
Remember folks, we have no idea why they did it until the team holds a presser tomorrow or announces another move. I’ll gladly join you in burning down HSBC Arena if it was simply a cost cutting move (which seems illogical, given his salary versus other players) but until we hear why, let’s all just keep our heads on straight for another day or so.
This makes complete sense
It was either Kennedy or Ennis on the left side. It appears that Ennis has won that battle and rightfully so.

I hope this is to clear up a roster spot for a possible Savard trade if the trade makes sense for us, which i would love and then Roy could be moved to wing for a year until we get rid of Connolly next summer. This also makes me think that Regier is either thinking about picking up Stempniak or possible giving Kassian a roster spot because another year in juniors is a waste for this kid, it will just set him back IMO.Still don’t understand why they can’t find a trade for kennedy or did Regier even try??
After he won the arbitration case, according to the CBA, he is not eligible for trade until January 2011. No point in trying what isn’t allowed. There is the possibility, though it seems absurdly risky unless it is with Edmonton or maybe Toronto, that this actually is part of a good faith trade to come, where either Edmonton or Toronto picks him up off of waivers and then makes a slightly lopsided trade with us after. I sorta doubt that is the case but its about the only way they could trade him now, unless he clears waivers, but if he clears waivers he obviously isn’t worth much in a trade.
I still don't see where this makes sense
I’m not saying Tim Kennedy was going to be the final piece in the teams effort to win a cup. But he wasn’t that bad, was he? I saw him as an up and coming forward with some offensive talent and a little grit. Aside from the Recchi hit in the playoffs, he displayed more grit than some of the other alleged top six forwards.
And he came in at a million dollars after arbitration. It’s not like the Sabres got MacArthur’ed here. That’s not a bad price. With the salary cap spots many teams are in, I’d say this guy actually had a lot of trade value. I was worried some team would try an poach him, netting the Sabres something like a 3rd round pick in RFA.
Now, that gets me to another thing – why not get something for nothing? I’m still angered by the fact this team got nothing for Zhitnik or Satan. I might even toss in Tallinder and Lydman now, but I’ll hold off on those two for the time being. What did Darcy think – he’d sign Kennedy for less this year? If he wasn’t in your organizational plans, then you should have pawned him off during the draft. Doesn’t matter to me if they got something so low as a six rounder; it would’ve been better than the nothing they’ll currently get, assuming they buy him out.
Talking of buy outs – since when does this organization do that? I know it’s only 333,333.34, but still…that’s not what they usually do. This kind of stuff only makes me speculate and drive the rumor bandwagon, and I hate thinking like that.
I agree
I thought his rookie campaign was above average. Of the few games I was able to watch last season, I thought his positioning and effort was there. It’s a good price IMO
Every time I buy a jersey...
…that player is gone the next season. I know nothing’s final…but happened with the two other jerseys I’ve bought in my lifetime. That being said. 3 thoughts:
1.) With an organization that is ALREADY having trouble signing players in free agency due to the belief that Buffalo is a crap-town to live in and management will not commit to it’s players…as a future potential free agent this looks awful for Buffalo. Putting one of it’s own on waivers after a 200,000 raise. This does not help with our reputation as a cheap organization
2.) The good from all of this is purely more cap room and if nothing pans out, more opporunity for AHL guys. Ennis and Gerbe could be in the lineup next year…who knows.
3.) Is it possible that the agent and Darcy have come to an agreement to waive him and sign him long term…1 million isn’t a lot of money but it’s also just a one year deal. could they waive him, hope no one picks his salary up, and then sign him to a longer, but ultimately cheaper per year, deal?
2.)
Morrisonn?
Seriously? This had better all be leading up to something bigger and better
Something to chew on:
There might be some issues with buying out Kennedy’s contract.
There are two things here that might prevent it: (section 11.18 on page 51 of the CBA)
(Thanks to the PPP CBA hawks)
After arbitrations, clubs get a special buyout period outside of the normal June 15-30 time frame. However, they do not get this period if they only have one arbitration hearing under 12.3a, which references club elected arbitration. This is odd because it seems that 12.3b would be a more likely canidate to prevent the buyout of cheap players (as with the <1 million rule), but who knows with the CBA…. Heck, it could mean all arbitrations for all we know.
Players “Making less than 1 million” cannot be bought out except during June 15-30 no matter what. Not sure if this applies, especially because we tend to hear rounded numbers so he could well be making 987,000 or 1,012,000 for all we know. Also i know from experience that less than can mean less than or equal to in a contract.
On the Mike Weber bandwagon.

Well there we go
Apparently the Sabres have signed D Shaone Morrisonn. I’d make a fanshot but its not showing up in places I’m willing to cite yet.

In a word...
…curious! I’m not sure why you get rid of a 24 year old kid who can contribute. A very curious move indeed.
My question is..
Did the Sabres have to remove someone from the roster in order to sign Morrisonn? Or are the two moves unrelated?
