The way I see it there is a simple solution to solve the Sabres run of futility. We already have the best player in hockey. Yes I think Ryan Miller is more important to the Sabres then Ovi or Sid are to their respective teams (this was highly evident last season after Miller was injured the Sabres immediately fell out of playoff contention). I also feel we have an incredibly strong system that is going to continually pump out NHLers and keep the Sabres with plenty of options. We have the best young defenseman in the game in Tyler Myers. We have a fan base that understands, lives and breathes Buffalo Sabres hockey. It is time for Darcy and the Buffalo Sabres front office to make some bold moves. To shell out some serious money and to trade away precious draft picks and prospects.
I haven’t researched who is a UFA or which teams might be willing to part with their superstars because I am too depressed to go to any hockey site. That being said with the resources the Sabres have and the potential this current team shows, there has never EVER been a better time to break the Darcy mold and make some big moves. I have no idea if Darcy will wake up and realize his team just got ousted by a significantly less talented Boston Bruins team. I have no idea if Lindy will walk into Darcy’s office and scream at him for some serious talent. I don’t know if Ryan Miller will go bezerk and demand some top end players to support him. What I do know is that we need to make a couple of moves and we need to make them NOW. We have the best goalie in the world and we couldn’t even win ONE playoff series. That is too depressing.
First we need a number one center. Ideally this guy is a leader too but they don’t exactly grow on trees so anyone number one center will do. I am willing to part with just about anything. Roy, Connolly, draft picks, and even prospects, you name it. Anyone not named Myers or Miller I would give up for a true number one center. The need for a big time scoring presence to anchor our top line has never been more evident. Our PP during the playoffs was the most disheartening thing I have ever seen. WE HAD AN EXTRA MAN AND WE COULDN’T EVEN SCORE ONCE!!!! Our lack of a true number one line hurt us again and again and again. Nothing more needs to be said about this need, we need one.
The next step is continuing to get bigger and tougher. We are going in that direction ( I am really excited about Kassian) but we are not there yet and we can afford to shed some of our undersized skill players in the form of some big bodies. We were simply manhandled in the Boston series and no team can make a long playoff run without some serious grit and strength. The NHL season and playoffs are a long grind and they take an incredible amount of toughness (both physical and mental). The current makeup of our team doesn’t have either the mental or physical side needed to win 16 playoffs games.
Finally we need to get a puck moving defenseman. Someone who can anchor our PP and help in the transition game. I know Myers is developing into the everything defenseman but he needs some help.
These needs are 100% fixable and something we need to do. The Buffalo Sabres will never win the Stanley Cup without making the necessary changes. I have been a die hard Sabres fan since I can remember and I will root for them until the bitter end, but nothing in the world is more frustrating then watching a team with all the right pieces not make the moves necessary to win it all.
Thoughts? Comments? Suggestions? Possible Moves? Renting out a billboard to beg Darcy to make some moves?
