Sabres vs. Bruins: Inside the Numbers
Most of us can agree that the regular season means absolutely nothing once the playoffs start. With that thought in mind I thought it would be nice to take a look at how the teams fared against each other during the regular season.
The Bruins and Sabres have been two of the best defensive teams in the entire NHL. The Bruins were second in the league allowing only 2.33 goals per game, while the Sabres were fourth best, allowing only 2.45 goals per game. The Sabres have decided advantage in goal scoring but they have been unable to generate much offense against the Bruins and Tuukka Rask.
Here is a look at regular season matchup between the Bruins and Sabres.

| Game 6 | L 1-3 |
| Sabres Record | 2-2-2 |
| Goals For/Game | 2.00 |
| Goals Against/Game | 2.17 |

Win at home
that’s all we have to do. This match-up makes me pretty nervous…though not as much as an Ottawa 1st round would have.
"Slide DiMaggio, slide!" "Hey, my name isn't DiMaggio, my name is mm..mmmm...mmm....mud."
Let’s not forget that though Rask has been very good against us – we were playing a depleted lineup that didn’t have much to play for the last time we faced Boston. If the roles were reversed I don’t think it’s out of the realm of possibility that we win that game 3-1 instead of losing 3-1. With such a small sample size that changes things drastically. Which leads me to my real point – with such a small sample size these statistics are certainly nothing to worry about.

The only way the Sabres can win this matchup is if: Vanek has a marque series, Miller plays better than he ever has played and Kaleta disrupts the play of the Boston forwards.
Boston is too physical of a team. They will wear down the lightweights: Gerbe, Ennis, Roy, Pomminville and Kennedy. They will also expose Myers as the rookie that he is. Additionally, Buffalo has an ineffective fourth line with slow and old Grier/Mair and an ineffective Torres.

that’s like saying Peyton Manning has to be good, Reggie Wayne needs to catch the ball and Bob Sanders needs to disrupt on the defensive side of the ball (NFL – Colts reference). To that – I say DUH!

Oooohh you really are a Bruins fan… makes sense now.
Dude how can you really say all of that? A season hasnt worn down those players, but the banged up Bruins will do that on their own? Come on… we made the playoffs… be happy.

…they will only score a goal per game vs Miller maybe two and additionally they will be out coached

I would’nt be shocked if they where outcoached. I’m not the biggest Claude Jullian fan.

If Miller plays better than he ever has..
that would mean 4 straight shutouts. That would mean our inadequate or exhausted or under-served lightweights (whichever word it was you don’t understand) wouldn’t have to do anything.

The reason the Bruins can win this series is that they are a good road team. If they steal game one or two, look out. It should be an entertaining series though.

That really is the key.
If the Bruins can take it back to Boston tied 1-1, we have a series.
2-0 up by the Sabres, it’s hard to have much hope.
Boston can't score
I will be surprised if this series makes it to a sixth game.

If the Bruins can score two or three goals a game with their goaltending and defense, I see a good series for the Bruins, and that’s not good for Buffalo.

Interesting stat re: boston's offense
206 gf, last in the EC, 30th overall.
That’s including shootout and 4v4 ot goals, so the total is probably lower than that.
If Boston scores three goals a game I think they have a chance. I really really doubt they will against Miller who has a 1.71 GAA against Boston during the regular season – and it’s pretty common to see those kind of numbers go down in playoff hockey. Add to that Boston’s injury troubles and I just really don’t see it happening.
Miller is the best in the league and has a pretty large amount of playoff experience – I wouldn’t bet against him.

Boston has some problems: namely,
Their whole first line is gone/traded/vanished.
Their defense is so badly injured they must play Dennis “Toskala” Wideman 23 minutes a game.
Their best goal scoring threats are Miroslav Satan and Mark Recchi, who were the best goal scoring threats of teams that could score TEN YEARS AGO. (Recchi is still pretty darn good though.)
However:
Boston is pretty darn good at defense.
Zdeno Chara pwns the sabres.
Tuukka Rask is both good and has too many letters in his name.
The bruins are healing up (other than the corpse that used to be marc savard.)
Other notes:
If gerbe is replaced by Connolly, the sabres are not much smaller than the Bruins in height or weight overall. This surprised me.
(not so) Bold prediction:
The Tylers will save us because they are amazing.
Not even the Toronto Maple Leafs could kill my optimism
Tyler Ennis: Freed from Portland!
agree
I like this matchup against Boston and feel we will move on and wind up playing New Jersey. BTW, the regular season DOES mean something, home ice advantage, for one.

I highly doubt we’ll see Stafford in the first game, possibly even the 1st round. Thats just my gut feeling based on how serious they take concussions and the fact that “The Kids” have been playing good while in for various injuries.

Chara most certainly does not pwn the Sabres...
…particularly in the playoffs. He was effectively knocked out of the ‘06 EC semi-finals after a hit from Afinogenov (yes, THAT Afinogenov). He spent the rest of the series wondering where the next hit was going to come from. Chara’s tendency to choke in the post season is almost as legendary as San Jose’s.
"I could have conquered Europe, all of it, but I had women in my life." - King Henry II of England
Great point. Lindy is all about exploiting matchups in the playoffs, whether it’s against a certain forward line like in the Ottawa series in 06, or against a player, like Gonchar in 98 or Bourque in 99, where he asked his forward to finish checks when going in deep. In most cases, he finds a way to weaken or slow down supposed advantages for the other team. I expect him to try and neutralize Chara or exploit some other weaker defensive pair during the series.
Good Luck
to the Sabres because Buffalo needs winning sports teams. The western New York fans deserve better than the Bills in football, so perhaps hockey glory awaits.

Looking forward to this series.
Boston really needs to bring this back to Beantown tied 1-1 at the worst. As great a fan I am of the Bruins, the season has shown a little lack in the perseverance department.
Miller and Rask are setting up for this to be a fine goalie duel. Granted, Rask hasn’t had playoff experience, but I feel he’s up to the task.
I’m going to Game 3, so hopefully it will be an even series.
Boston’s home record is a pedestrian 18-17-6 and it was .500 until they beat Carolina on Saturday. Buffalo’s road record is 20-17-4. I’d say the pressure is all on Boston to not only take 1, but perhaps 2 games in Buffalo, considering the mediocre home record.
I’ve watched several of the Boston-Buffalo matchups and there were a fair number of Sabre fans in the crowd and were loud enough to be heard on the TV. Considering most Boston sports fans rank the B’s 4th well behind the Sox and behind the Pats and Celtics, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a very vocal Sabres contingent in Boston for the playoffs.
I wouldn’t bet on that. Bruins have Good fans.

The Bruins haven’t finished higher than 15th (this year) in attendance since 2000. Usually they’ve been between 18 and 25 during that time. It may be a huge city with a great hockey tradition, but during the swoon in the mid 90s and early part of the decade, alot of fans were lost and I think still haven’t come back (understandably so). If people show up, it’s more because of bandwagondom than actually filling seats which the data shows they haven’t done relative to the rest of the NHL.
Sabres have gone through bankruptcy, nearly moved, and still in that timeframe outdrew the B’s in every year except 2003 (the aforementioned bankruptcy year).
great fans in Buffalo
It is true Buffalo does have better fans than any team except Montreal. Unfortunately, we don’t have a comparable team.
The power of the unibrow is compelling
It’s just scary. :}

Has been some tough years.
Used to go to a few game a year as a kid, but since I’ve worked in Boston, I’ve started purchasing mini-plans.
First year working there, my friends and I would get tickets whenever we could as we just love the game, but we’d be there with maybe 7-8 thousand other people. Sort of depressing.
But, it has been rising every year since then. There’s been some down years, but we’ll be back.
And a lot of that will be related to our draft pick tonight…..
Behind the Celtics?
I’d argue that to the day I die.
Only reason that’s even in debate is because of the 2008 NBA title.
I’ve never understood the awe that people have of other teams fans in a building. You go well past Worcester toward the New York Border or the border with Vermont, and it’s pretty much it’s own region. There’s a number of Sabre fans out their due to location.
Habs kept chirping about how many fans they’d have in Boston last year as well.
Also, people really like to visit Boston……..
Celtics fans are awful. Bandwaganers. It bothers me that I am in the same catagory as them- a Celtics “fan”.

Will be a good series
Rask is going to be the future of the Bruins, no doubt about that, this will be a really good test for Rask going against the best goalie in the world, and this be a good test for the bruins offense. you know what they say, a regular season does no matter anymore. this will also be a test for the sabres offense, since im a sabres fan im biased and think that we have the upper edge on the offense, hopefully we can get some great scoring from timmy when he comes back, and vanek keeps this streak going. chara i think is now given the oppotunity to prove to the nhl that there was a reason he was the venzia winner last year, he won that award right? but also for myers since he has been in the spotlight for the calder trophy. whats is satan going to be like in the playoffs? i feel there is alot of pressure on him, since bruins fans are now counting on him for scoring, and he didnt have that pressure when he won the cup with the penguins, b/c of sid the kid. it should be a good series.
The VEZINA is awarded to the best goaltender, I don’t think Chara won that one. He won the Norris (best defenseman) last year.
"The horse jumped over the f#@king fence."

While I agree that Rask is the future...
…he currently has no playoff experience. That will come, in time, and he will improve. However, in the end, this series isn’t going to be about how good Rask is (and he’s pretty damned good indeed). The series will be about one thing:
1) The Bruins finished the season with the worst offense in the conference.
2) Their best offensive players are injured and won’t be able to play.
3) This poor and now depleted offense has to go up against Ryan Miller, who has absolutely killed them this season and now has additional experience under pressure thanks to the Olympics.
Rask is certainly good enough to steal Boston a game, even if their offense can’t score much. He’s not good enough to get them the series. Not even Brodeur at his best could. Sabres in 5.
"I could have conquered Europe, all of it, but I had women in my life." - King Henry II of England
Broduer at his best could. Because giguere at his best did. Against the Redwings no less. Another thing to add is that Rask isn’t Carey Price, as in not every goaltender to make it to the post season sucks when the first get there….But yeah its the Lack of offense thats going to doom them in.. The Anaheim team that won the Cup...
…was virtually identical statistically to the Red Wings and were tied for third in the West in offense (behind only Nashville and Colorado). The ‘06-’07 Ducks were about as complete a team as you could ever hope to have, and personally I think they were one of the best overall Cup winners of the last decade. The ‘09-’10 Bruins are nowhere near that level of play. They’re a marginal playoff team.
"I could have conquered Europe, all of it, but I had women in my life." - King Henry II of England
But...
…you’re probably talking about the ‘02-’03 Anaheim team that lost to the Devils in seven. Admittedly, that Ducks team wasn’t as good, but Giguere did indeed get hot.
"I could have conquered Europe, all of it, but I had women in my life." - King Henry II of England
Yeah I was reffering to the 03 run when Jiggy won the Conn Smythe. That Redwings team was soo stacked.
Their cup winning team had a lot more talent on it. Niedermayer + Pronger = unfair advantage.

Sabres in 5
You can take it to the bank. With Ennis and Connolly possibly playing on the same line could be scary. Hopefully Hecht is able to play so we can have arguably the best checking line in the East, with Goose and Grier.
Sounds like he may be in the lineup for Game one according to Lindy’s press conference yesterday.
