But now we have Raffi Torres! All of Buffalo’s scoring problems are solved!

All the goodwill Buffalo created by playing so well for 2/3 of this season is pretty much lost with me. I realize that is almost mathematically impossible for them to miss the playoffs, but at this rate, who cares either way if they slide into an awful first round matchup?

I really want them to turn it around, I desperately do. But, I just don’t see it.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

by BeastMode on Mar 3, 2010 9:39 PM EST reply actions

Oh man, we lost on national TV? Oh wait, this is Buffalo. It's what we do.

“But now we have Raffi Torres! All of Buffalo’s scoring problems are solved!”

That’s sarcasm right? If so, I agree with you 100%. So much cap space was available… It should have been:

OUT: MacArthur, Stafford and Lydman.
IN: Torres, (Whitney?) and a callup from Portland.

Why do we need more draft picks, don’t we have enough guys moping around in the farm system? Anyone who thinks Torres is going to turn this team around is kidding themselves.

by Jflaskey2 on Mar 3, 2010 10:12 PM EST reply actions

You can’t just magically move guys like that and if you get rid of Lydman, what is your starting 6? Also, get rid of Stafford too and then you have only 4 of 6 top scoring line positions solved. Slide Torres into second line LW. Then what? WHo would you put at RW? And, from everything I’ve read, the Whitney thing just wasn’t going to happen.

In the end, look around the league. As crazy as it sounds, Torres was one of the best players acquired.

The problem is, just as you noted, he alone won’t turn it around. It’s going to require the guys already on the roster to step up and finish. That includes Myers. WHile he played a solid game defensively, it has been fairly ugly lately and, he has to finish those opportunities like he had at the end against the Capitals.

My hope is that Ennis is brought up and given a chance. I really don’t see how it could hurt. The Sabres are a point back with two games at hand on Ottawa, this thing is still within their grasp. But damn if time isn’t running out.

It'll be just you, me, and Peter Nincompoop.

That's why I mentioned two trades PLUS bringing some guys up from Portland.

If you look at this: 2 major trades and a bunch of players from Portland coming up…. that’s like the NHL version of an oil change. It would have shuffled things up a bit. Two new skilled players AKA upgrades, plus a bunch of new young guys from Portland being injected into the team. IT WOULD HAVE HELPED! HELL, LETS TRY SOMETHING, ANYTHING!

Instead we get the old “one guy out, one guy in”, “just good enough” trick from Darcy. Yeah, Torres is the highest scorer on our team now… but think about that, nobody is REALLY scoring for us this year. 19 goals really isnt THAT impressive when you put it into the perspective of the rest of the league leaders. We needed at least two goal scorers, you add two guys with scoring potential on the team and two heads are better than one. I have some confidence in Torres, but he could be a rental and there’s always that nasty thing called “team chemistry”, aka that thing “Drury and Briere suck anyway” guys don’t seem to understand.

I would like to have seen Torres and another trade, along with Gerbe and Ennis up to replace Stafford and Kennedy, benching those two.

So, where’s this whole “Olympic break should have helped the Sabres” thing? Two losses in a row following the Olympic break; looks like nothing has changed. Regier bought himself a round or two of NHL playoff revenue. Maybe he can add that to the extra dough he didn’t spend with our cap space and buy that summer home in the Bahamas.
