Ovechkin Suspension....
Hey guys in light of today's developments on the Ovechkin suspension and lack thereof on Matt Cooke I was wondering what your opinions were on the status how suspensions are dealt out in the NHL and what you would do if you were Colin Campbell. This has been a hot topic between me and my coworkers for about the last week. My thoughts are pretty straightforward. Both Cooke and Ovechkin deserved to be suspended. In Cooke's case I think it is pretty obvious he was intentionally going after Savard up high in open ice with his elbow. Ovechkin depending on whether or not you are a fan of his or not you will most likely have varying opinions but to me it was a bone head play that was completely unnecessary and he at least in my opinion blatantly pushed Campbell. Attached is a poll or just add your comments. Thanks and GO SABRES!!!!

Why do they even suspend Ovechkin though…Look at tonite’s score they won like 7-2…It doesn’t hurt the capitals at all.
Theyve scored 21 goals in the 3 games hes been suspended for so far this year… impressive huh? lol 7 goals a game without the leading goal scorer.

It’s more personal than team. At $9.5M a year, AO makes about $115k/game. So a two game suspension w/o pay cost him a quarter million dollars.
But you are right, after this suspension, the Caps are now 7-3 without him. He’s not essential to the team, he’s just another cog in a well-oiled machine.
Side note: seeing that AO makes more in a day than I make in a year just made me die a little inside.
Among media pundits there seems to be a dichotomy...
There are those who feel that Cooke should have been hammered and Ovechkin not while there is another group who feel that Cooke’s actions were ok and Ovechkin’s not. They see this only in terms of the alleged Crosby-Ovechkin rivalry and which one should be favored by the league. What does not seem to be realized by the media is that the desire by some fans to suspend Ovechkin does not automatically make one pro-Crosby and the desire to suspend Cooke does not make one pro-Ovechkin.
The league and the media’s maniacal and dangerous obsession with Crosby and Ovechkin have blinded them to the reality that there are twenty-eight other teams out there and that suspensions need to be handed out for the good of the league as a whole, not because of how it will affect the two particular teams that the NHL has chosen to promote over all the others. Both should have gotten a minimum of five games. Personally, I think Ovechkin should have gotten ten because of his status as a repeat offender.

Completely agree. The media’s obsession with these two is beyond insane. In fact the only time that the NHL makes Sportscenter anymore is when one of those two do something. It is very disconcerting as a hockey fan that the NHL gets no love from the largest sports outlet in the country while they spend hours upon hours on just about anything else…in fact ESPN doenst even think that the NHL is one of the big four leagues anymore…what a shame
