Bruins 3 Sabres 2 SO: Paille Comes Back to Haunt Sabres
All four goals scored in this game were scored by players that started the season with the Buffalo Sabres. Daniel Paille scored both Bruins goals in the first period and he had two or three chances at the hat trick in the first 20 minutes.
The Sabres were the better team over the final 4 minutes but once again it's not good enough. In December and January the Sabres were able to come back and win games they fell behind but when you play with fire you get burnt and we have seen that happen to the Sabres over and over again in recent weeks.
The Sabres had opportunities in the final two periods but only Derek Roy and Tyler Myers were able to beat Tuukka Rask. Rask made some really big saves for Boston and none was better than a huge save on Thomas Vanek who was parked at the top of the crease.
The Sabres now find themselves in second place in the Northeast Division and fifth place in the Eastern Conference after the shootout loss to the Bruins. They still have two games in hand on the first place Senators but they need they need to start taking advantage against teams that are trailing them in the standings.

Final Thoughts
- The bigest news out of this game might be the injury to Tyler Myers. Lindy Ruff indicated that he was okay after the game but took a puck to the neck and his status would be determined at a later time. The Sabres will miss Myers in the lineup if he is out for any amount of time. Luckily the Olympic break is coming and the injury doesn't appear to be serious.
- I thought Paul Gaustad played one of his better games this season and hopefully he will be able to build on his performance. I might be in the minority but I think Goose has struggled this season.
- I still think the Sabres could win the division but for the first time I am starting to panic. They need to turn their game around quickly or the Sens could run away with the division.
- It was nice to see Derek Roy finally get a goal but will this be something to build on or will he disappear again? I don't have the answer to this question. I have been a supporter or Roy for a long time but his play has not been good recently.

Killing Buffalo for 3 years now… I dont understand why they dont go all out against the lower seeded teams.
Hopefully someone can figure out what the hells wrong and fix it quick. But it seems like hustle and playing smart is what wrong… And those arent the easiest things to fix. I hope he calls some young kids up from Portland and try to spark this team. I wouldnt mind some of the “every dayers” sitting a game or two to try and light a fire under them.
This easy schedule before the break (Car, Cls, Bos, Car) has been wasted and its nothing easy after the break wth Pitt and Washington.

I see that OTT has more wins in the points tie at 72, but NHL.com still shows BUF at the top of the division. Is that because we have 2 games in hand?

Probably
The Sabres post game show showed Buffalo in fifth. I’ll check to see what it really is.

Yep
the first tie breaker is fewer number of games played an the second is wins. The Sabres are still technically in first place because of the two games in hand. At the end of the season that tie breaker will be thrown out because everyone will have the same number of games. When that happens, wins will be the first tie breaker.

Crossing my fingers they’ll make good on those 2 games in hand …

Another loss for a team that is not getting the bounces, and continues to start slow.
Tell me, doesn’t Vanek have any self-respect? He make run-of-the-mill goalies look like world beaters.
The team looks burnedout and weary; unable to withstand the grueling schedule. While other teams are improving, the Sabres are sliding into medocrity. They had great momentum before the Western swing where they forgot how to win the tough games and learned how to lose them.
The only thing worse than being a Sabres fan is being a member of the team. At least I don’t have to look at myself in the mirror each morning and see the reflection of a loser and comtemplate a another long, long off season.

Usually I dont agree with you on here… but…
They had great momentum before the Western swing where they forgot how to win the tough games and learned how to lose them.
Pre-West Coast Swing Sabres won the close games. They (for the most part) played balls out and played with swagger that they knew they were in the game and could win it. The D was playing great, the O was scoring enough to win the games, and Miller was as hot as you can be.
Post-West Coast Swing Sabres are going back to the Sabres I do not like. They lose the close games. They arent playing 60 minutes, or even 40. Last night was a little different but still same result. A loss.
Im not jumping off the Peace Bridge yet, but theres 2 ways this team can respond.
A. With passion, fire, determination, will, heart, and any other synonym for that. Im hoping they go with this one because I believe in this team. I really do. They need to add a few pieces… but for the most part I believe in this team
B. They pack it in and complete a horrible collapse. If they do. Ill be one pissed off fan. And chances are that would be the end of the Ruff era. Which would be crazy to think… but I think that would happen.

Parts of their game are beginning to come back together. The shots against have steadily been coming down in the past week or so. Sub-optimal goaltending did them in against Carolina, for example. Shots for are up and shots against are down. That’s a sign that they’re tightening it up and playing the system better than at the end of the West Coast Trip. I’m not crazy about the way they’re playing, certainly the swagger from earlier in the season is gone, but they still have the stones to put a bad period behind them and tie up a game down 2 goals against a good defensive team like Boston. Gaustad throwing his weight around was good to see, it looked like he was a little quicker after 2 days off than he’d been recently, Grier too.
The lack of consistent play by every center not named Connolly is what is killing us right now that and the complete breakdown of the ‘bottom 6.’ CMac isn’t good enough to play as a scoring winger and isn’t good enough defensively to be a scorer on a checking line. The lack of Kaleta is really beginning to show as well.
It’s not any one thing that has contributed to this skid, it’s a ton of little things.
