Some Sabres Could Be On The Move as NHL Trade Deadline Approaches
Some of us have been mesmerized by USA hockey and some us have taken a break along with the Buffalo Sabres. This week the players that are still around starting practicing and that means we can start looking ahead to next week and the makeup of the team as they head down the stretch.
I think most of us like the makeup of the team but feel they need a few tweaks to be contenders for the Stanley Cup. A couple of weeks ago I did a post on players the Sabres should target at the deadline. {Note:cross Matt Cullen off that list because he was traded to Ottawa}.
Today I want to take a look at players that are currently on the team but could be dealt for a number of reasons. I don't see Darcy Regier trading away any assets on the roster but the potential is there for a handful of players, including a couple of Olympians. Darcy could be tempted to trade some players because of the risk of losing them in the off-season.
A list of players that could be moved by the Sabres brass is after the jump.
Henrik Tallinder is an unrestricted free agent after this season and that automatically makes him part of this list. After a couple of rough seasons he has bounced back with a solid season playing alongside of rookie phenom Tyler Myers. Trading him away wold be a huge mistake and I don't see him leaving the team. It will tough to see him leave in the off-season but the risk is too great to let him leave now.
Like Tallinder, Lydman will be an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season. He is another asset that will bring back on a nice return for the Sabres, but that return would be the future. For the Sabres, the future is now and that makes Lydman safe in the short term. He is likely to leave in the off-season but he is important to the current squad.
Lydman is often criticized by Sabres fans but he brings more to the table than the stats show. He is a shot blocking machine for the Sabres and he is sound positionally in his own zone. He is prone to bad giveaways in the defensive zone but his positives outweigh the negatives.
It would be a surprise if he is dealt at the deadline.
Once again MacArthur will be a restricted free agent this off-season. He has not been good enough to stay in the top six and he doesn't fit the role of a third or fourth line player. His defensive weaknesses have been apparent this season and he has become a liability for this Sabres squad.
I could see MacArthur being dealt for an asset that could be used to acquire help in the stretch run. He has an offensive upside that a contending team might take a chance on. If the Sabres unload a roster player, he is the most likely candidate to be dealt.
Stafford has seen his name pop up in many trade rumors involving the Sabres. He is under contract to the Sabres for another season beyond this one and is playing as a top six forward. He has underachieved in the minds of many fans but his talent is undeniable. He will continue to be a member of the Buffalo Sabres unless they acquire a player they feel would fit on a line with Vanek and Roy.
We still have a Bronze Medal game and a Gold Medal game to enjoy this weekend and Monday the NHL gets started again. The Sabres will be in action on Tuesday (Pittsburgh) and Wednesday (Washington) which could affect some of the potential trades that will be made. IT should be a fun week of hockey both on and off the ice.
What trades would you like to see?

I wouldnt mind seeing BIlly Guerin come to Buffalo. I dont know what I’d give up for him, but a vet would be nice to bring in. Other that that I would just like to see Darcy and Co. to bring in someone thats actually going to help push for a cup, ie: not Dominc Moore type…

Hey guys, new to the blog. I think trading MacArthur for as little as 2 sticks and a puck to be named later would be an improvement to the roster.

Trade Thoughts???
I came across a rumor about a week ago on ESPN that had Craig Rivet going to Los Angeles for Alexander Frolov… I’d love that deal, but don’t really believe it. Rivet has been struggling and the Sabres would need to move a contract to obtain a player of significant value. However, Frolov doesn’t appear to be a “Lindy Ruff kind of player” if you know what I mean?
Other names I’ve read quite a bit about as possibilities for the Sabres: Ray Whitney (W), Jeff Halpern ©, James Wisniewski (D), Dan Hamhuis (D), Garnett Exelby (D), Alex Ponikarovsky (W), Lee Stempniak (W), Martin Biron (G), Jordan Leopold (D), Nathan Horton (C/W), and Raffi Torres (W).
Obviously, the Sabres would only target 2 or possibly 3 (if Biron included) guys from that list. Realistically, Horton and Hamhuis will likely cost more than Regier is likely looking to pay in return. I’d love to see either play for Buffalo, but Regier typically makes deals where he has the leverage… those two will have too many suitors for that to be the case. Something about Halpern screams Regier-move all over it. Regier loves acquiring Centers and Halpern would be a perfect 3rd line center for this team. When Tampa first acquired him from Dallas, he went off with 18 points (10 goals) in his final 19 games of 2008. He’s a righthanded shot and plays equally well at both ends of the ice… and brings passion and grit every game. With Kennedy struggling and Gaustad more suited for a 4th line Center role or 3rd line winger, Halpern seems very likely.
If the Sabres were to move Rivet or Lydman, I could see them making a move for Wisniewski. Regier went hard after him before the Blackhawks sent him to Anaheim at last year’s deadline. He would be a solid addition to Buffalo’s blueline. Personally, I’d love to see Hamhuis… but he’d likely be a rental and cost too much to acquire for only a limited time. IF Regier doesn’t ship out a regular D-man, then Exelby may be a nice addition and he could probably get him from Toronto for Paetsch or a mid-round draft pick. Exelby is one tough competitor, but I’m not sure he skates well-enough to play in Ruff’s system. With Sekera’s play taking off in the Olympics, maybe adding a guy like Exelby as a 7th defenseman would work?
As for the wingers: Whitney, Stempniak, Torres and Ponikarovsky? I’m not one to think Buffalo needs another guy on the smallish side of things, but Whitney would be a tremendous veteran addition to this team. He would definitely add the offense needed for Buffalo to put out 2 top scoring lines every night… lines that actually produce, not just listed as a scoring line because they get more ice time. While I can easily envision Whitney developing instand chemistry with Connolly, Ponikarovsky would be a nice addition to put opposite of Vanek. Ponikarovsky would balance the size better opposite of Pominville, but his defensive play would give Vanek more freedom to “cheat up” on the backend. Stempniak and Torres would both be perfect on a third line with Grier (and maybe Halpern). They each bring a great intensity level and physical side to the game, while also making nice offensive contributions with limited ice time. These guys are “gamers” like Grier, with more offensive upside.
Now that I’ve spent my time discussing the guys I’ve read about, it will probably be a waste of time and the Sabres will acquire a guy or two not even mentioned in my recap or any of the media I’ve come across. For what it’s worth, I also hope the Sabres can acquire Biron but that they can also find a home for Lalime. Even if it means he heads to New York as part of the deal. Either way, I think they’ll likely go with Enroth as the backup next year. He’s playing much better lately and will probably provide a cheaper option than a veteran reserve.
DC Chocolate City!
just so you guys know
Hamhuis’ cost is a scoring winger (Stafford) and a pick, or a scoring winger and a 6th defenseman (not sure who that is on Buffalo).
On the Forecheck-where Patric Hornqvist is never underappreciated.

I would consider Jeff Halpern for a draft pick a pretty decent rental. Horton, Whitney, or Stempniak would be good signings as well. Ponikarovsky and Torres would be gambles. I’d say Biron, Exelby, Wisniewski, Leopold, and Hamhuis are a waste of time for the Sabres – we don’t need defensemen or goalies for a playoff run.
Frankly, I don’t see a trade happening. At least not with any of the players above. I think Regier will stand pat with the team as it is because he doesn’t have much of a choice. I would like to see Vanek traded, but that isn’t going to happen with the ridiculous contract he has no team is going to want a 19-goal scorer with a 50-goal scorer salary.
I also think Regier should be making plans for next year, because this year’s Sabres will be lucky to make the playoffs. Even if the they do make the playoffs, they will drop out after the first round. The chemistry and talent are just not there.
I'll make this simple
How have they won so many games then?

Lucky to make the playoffs? Sure they have had a rough patch lately, but we still have 22 games remaining to secure about 19 points so I’m not sure that is our biggest concern (*knocks on wood). As for chemistry, I think this year’s team is much better than the past few years. As much as everyone loves to criticize Regier for not making some big moves, it has given some of the younger players a chance to mature as one group. There have been plenty of games that the team has managed to come from behind and steal points thanks to a great team effort and never give up attitude.
MacArthur is probably the player I would miss the least due to his inconsistency. Stafford would be nice to keep around for another year due to his reasonable contract.
How much would Rafalski or Parise cost? Pay whatever you can for those guys. I’d give up Lydman and Macarthur plus a pick for Parise.
They aren't for sale

They won those games before the trip out West. Now that the competition has ramped up in intensity, they are fading into obscurity, because there is no team leader on the ice. Without the greatest goalie in the World, they would be struggling to stay out of last place.
I agree that Miller is a big reason the team is where it is but reality is that it was his play and not the teams play that seen the team go on a losing streak. It looks like he is playing much better now and the Sabres need to ride that momentum. I think we’ll have to agree to disagree and see who is right when the playoffs come around.
