Canada vs. Russia [Game Thread]

It's always fun to watch a good hockey game with some friends. Since we are all friends here we decided to throw up an open thread for the Canada versus Russia game that is set to take place tonight. I'm not going to add any words of wisdom to this game but I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

There are two more games after the Canada-Russia game and bot contests will feature Buffalo Sabres players. We will leave the thread open for those games this evening. Toni Lydman will be on the ice for Finland when they take on the Czech Republic at 10 p.m. and Henrik Tallinder (Sweden) and Andrej Sekera (Slovakia) will face each other at midnight Eastern.

yeah they’ve been pretty dominant so far.

Can;t decide if I’d rather see the US in a rematch with Canada or face the Russians, but I’m leaning towards the rematch. If only for the Cup atmosphere crowd.

by Andy Boron on Feb 24, 2010 7:43 PM EST reply actions

I think the rematch…I like the matchup with Canada more than I like the matchup with Russia.

I think the Russian defense might be too weak to play against Canada.

They’re really laying some big hits on Ovechkin

I think hat has to be the strategy of any team that plays them.

If you’re a fan of Canada. Russia is looking totally overmatched, and taking penalties isn’t helping.

Uh-Oh

this could get ugly.

Includes blocked shots

Anybody seen Alex Ovechkin this game? Can’t remember the last time I saw him or heard his name mentioned.

by Andy Boron on Feb 24, 2010 8:45 PM EST reply actions

Nope. 1 shot on goal and a minus 2. I would have assumed he would have at least rage smashed a few guys by now

by kitaman27 on Feb 24, 2010 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Just texted a friend the exact same thing. Good call…

by krytime on Feb 24, 2010 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

What’s up with that “intense doorbell ring” thing that arenas are starting to play these days? I’ve heard it every time a team has had a PP.

by Andy Boron on Feb 24, 2010 8:58 PM EST reply actions

I think Ottawa started it (one more reason to hate them), but I’ve noticed it’s spreading. Really annoying.

and it seems none of the goalies in this game have learned anything from it,

How were those not offsetting

"Few of us have chosen our clubs, they have simply been presented to us; and so as they slip from the Second Division to the Third, or sell their best players, or buy players who you know can't play, . . . we simply curse, go home, worry for a fortnight and then come back to suffer all over again." Absolutely

that was a dirty hit

by David Oleksy on Feb 24, 2010 9:45 PM EST up reply actions

That was the definition of dirty – there wasn’t any attempt to play the puck. The sole purpose of that play was to injure, and throwing someone to the ice head first I’m surprised Semin wasn’t injured.

so who would review that kind of thing? The IOC? He wasn’t given a game misconduct was he?

A minor, that’s all. Ridiculous.

The IOC or the IIHF

they won’t do anything. They wouldn’t want to have a riot on their hands.

What is the deal with Eddie O.

Is he watching the same game. Boyle and Getzlaf are the two players as fault and he is blaming Malkin and Semin for what happened. Ridiculous Eddie O.

Are you kidding!? You don’t blame Boyle!? He got hit – cleanly – and then went after a defenseless player in an illegal manner.

That is absurd.

So who are you guys rooting to play against?

Either team is going to be a challenge, but I think the Fins scare me a bit more.
