USA vs. Switzerland [Game Thread]

Usa_medium
United States (3-0-0-0)

Canada Place - 3:00 PM EST - Vancouver, BC
TV: NBC

Switzerland (1-1-1-1)
Switzrld_medium

This is the official Die by the Blade game thread for the United States first game of the Olympic tournament. There will also be a game thread at SB Nation.com that you can visit.

This will be the second meeting between these two squads at the Olympics. The United States handled Switzerland 3-1 in the opening game of the tournament last Tuesday. After a tentative start to the game Bobby Ryan (Anaheim Ducks) started the scoring for USA with about one minute left in the first period. The United States built off that momentum and took command of the game with a pair of second period goals. Roman Wick scored for Switzerland in the third period but they would get no closer.

This game is going to come down to goaltending for both sides. Ryan Miller was phenomenal on Sunday against Canada, and he deserves all the praise he is getting but Jonas Hiller was equally impressive when Switzerland took Canada to overtime. Both goalies will need to be good in this game and Jonas Hiller will need to be the difference if the Swiss have any hope of upsetting the Americans.

I'm at work

so keep me updated!

USA! USA! USA!

[Side note: Just realized that I see the Swiss coach’s son play on a regular basis]

USA USA USA
I totally took an hour off so i could watch the game earlier.

But i’ll still be on a 1.5 hour dvr delay so i probably won’t say much on the thread.

Not even the Toronto Maple Leafs could kill my optimism

I like the look of the Swiss’ record. One tally in each column.

I don't like the way you said that

sounds like they’re taking him “out back”
lol

by The Burl 8 on Feb 24, 2010 3:07 PM EST up reply actions

But seriously

I kind of doubt it. With the schedule Miller usually keeps, the possibility of 6 games in 10 days…not too scary lol. I wouldn’t mind seeing a little bit of Quick, just don’t put Timmy in…he doesn’t impress me much.

by The Burl 8 on Feb 24, 2010 3:08 PM EST up reply actions

There’s big leads… 3-0 after a period… and then there’s BIG leads.

Up 6 goals with any kind of time left, you don’t take Miller out to keep him healthy, you take him out becuse you want to have his backup get some time in.

I've got class later

And I have to give a speech. Is it a good idea to have a few brews to settle my nerves and support an American brewery?

by actioncuse on Feb 24, 2010 3:08 PM EST reply actions

Absolutely

And make it a Miller. I’m probably going to pick up a case of ITHACA Beer Company’s Nut BROWN. Supporting America AND #32.

look above everyones heads – not at their faces. back wall of the room is easiest – people just think that you are looking at someone else.

maybe one drink – but you can get flustered easier. anyways – public speaking is easy if you know your material. only reason that you should stress is if you’re not prepared

Hi all

Just got in, last minute looked decently intense. Miller is playing, well, like normal.

by dfderie on Feb 24, 2010 3:11 PM EST reply actions

I saw two penalties there. Two separate hits, two separate trips.

by dfderie on Feb 24, 2010 3:14 PM EST reply actions

Could be – didn’t see a replay.

Regards to the USA penalty… equal call (or not)? Again, I only saw a piece of it.

If you're on twitter

today’s hashtag is #suckitsuisse. I preferred something in Swiss German but it’s too hard to follow.

by twoeightnine on Feb 24, 2010 3:23 PM EST reply actions

I heard of Twitter.

Being in IT since 1984 and on the internet since 1995 it sounds familiar. Just can’t place it though.

Guess I confuse it with Facebook, FriendFeed, Netscape, Compuserve, and all those other here-today-gone-tomorrow things. :-P

But you have me working on it.

do a strip-tease
suck it suisse

Yeah. Needs some work.

by dfderie on Feb 24, 2010 3:32 PM EST up reply actions

Netscape, Compuserve

hahahahahahaha – you just moved up a few notches in my book. i’m from the old school too. i remember when IRC channels were the hot diggity. then instant messaging etc…

now I don’t even pay attention to any of it – been seeing that crap be pushed out for 15 years and I LOVE peoples fascinations to it – thinking it’s a new concept – nope – just a twist from the good ‘ol days. at least I don’t get disconencted from my 14-4 modem anymore when my ISP has 30 users connected

Sabres fan here

meaning I subscribe to “the system” this season. Hey, it’s working for the team.

They aren’t laying back. They seem to be playing like they have something to prove – which is good. The mistakes also seem to be mainly a matter of not having instincts that come from playing with each other for 100 games.

Not going to say they are playing “grat” – it’s 0-0 – but they are definitely taking control and making a statement that they are the better team playing.

Am I the only one thinking that a game like this would suck pulling in ratings if NBC aired it live in prime time?

Sure, I’m enjoying this game nearly as much as Sunday’s. But I’m a hockey fan. At 0-0 I have to wonder if many non-hockey fans would still be watching.
