Is Thomas Vanek Becoming An Enigma?

The term 'enigma' is in a coach's vocabulary of words he hopes will never describe a player on his roster. There are several classifications of being such a person with question marks outlining their potential. Marian Gaborik is a headcase because of his injury woes preventing him from being the superstar he is. Nikolai Zherdev could make it look as if he had the puck on a string floating through defensemen without losing control. Inconsistency was the Ukrainian's nemesis and he didn't take his gifts seriously enough.

When Thomas Vanek entered the NHL, he scored 25 goals and 48 points as a rookie for the Buffalo Sabres. In the postseason, he was often a healthy scratch and contributed two goals in ten matches. Next season came the infamous 43-goal, 41-assist explosion with a plus-47 to boot. With Buffalo's amazing line-up, Vanek was a third-line player mostly and didn't have to go up against the oppositions best defensemen which obviously favored his task.

The Austrian added ten points in 16 playoff games but wasn't nearly as potent as he was during the regular season. Then came the lucrative offer from the Edmonton Oilers in the summer totaling $50 million dollars over a seven-year span. In matching the offer sheet, the Sabres ensured that they wouldn't lose Vanek similarly to how they allowed Chris Drury and Daniel Briere to part ways.

Here's where the problems began for the 26-year-old as he now went face-to-face with elite defensemen which hurt his production drastically. Add the huge expectations with the contract and the first half of 2008 was a nightmare for Vanek. Below are his numbers in a month-by-month comparison from that campaign.

October: three goals, five assists, eight points.

November: three goals, five assists, eight point.

December: five goals, one assist, six points.

January: three goals, seven assists, ten points.

February: 13 goals, seven assists, 20 points.

March: five goals, three assists, eight points.

April: four goals in three games.

As you can see, Vanek did the majority of his damage after December seemingly forgetting about his pressure and playing hockey. The strong finish gave him 36 goals and 64 points; respectable given his awful start. Last year, Vanek scored 40 goals in just 73 games in a rejuvenating season. A jaw injury took nine games away from him and slowed down his production upon returning.

The former property of the University of Minnesota missed a total of five games this season with an upper body injury followed by an abdominal strain. Vanek has 18 goals through 55 games and is on pace for his lowest total since his freshman year. Buffalo as a team, is struggling to put up goals as they depend on a style stressing more defense but Vanek is expected to supply at least 30 goals which he isn't targeting.

Opportunities have been there yet the tips, shots and break-aways aren't beating goaltenders the way they have when he's clicking. While he is capable of burying every prime chance he gets, it's become a common theme for him to receive a couple before making one count. Vanek has the size and scoring hands that coaches covet but minor health problems and inconsistency have kept him from staying with the league's elite.

Everybody knows what Thomas Vanek can do. The question is what will he do in the remaining 22 games on the Sabres' schedule and more importantly, the postseason?

I just wish we could trade Vanek. Unfortunately, his absurd contract makes that impossible.

We could trade him. It certainly isn’t impossible anyhow.

I personally am expecting a great ending of the season from Vanek. The thing with Vanek that is so frustrating is his head. He gets so down on himself when he doesnt score, or misses a chance that it sticks with him not only thru that game but into the next games as well. Where he, usually, has only himself to blame for his missed opportunities, I wish he would just forget about it and go back out there the next shift and score.

I have a problem where I actually feel bad for Thomas. And I shouldnt because at the end of the day hes making 7mil a year, and living a great life, etc etc…. but I get attatched to these players (Sabres and Bills) to where sometimes I feel bad for them. And Vanek is the biggest case of that with me. You see him slamming his stick, yelling at himself, head down on the bench… You can tell he cares or else he wouldnt be feeling that bad about it… but at the same time… he needs to start producing.

Now Ive only been on DBTB since this summer… But DO how many game reviews over the past 2-3 years have you wrote “Vanek probably should have had 2-3 goals but only ended up with 1” I know ive said that countless times myself just watching games. He has the talent, he can score, he can score different ways (deflections, rebounds, tip ins, etc.) But hes got to start scoring consistantly.

So to sum it up… Stop being so hard on yourself Vanek, and start scoring consistantly.

“Alfredsson was out one game with a broken jaw and Vanek took nine matches off despite being less damaged. What does that explain about his heart and determination?”
Alfresson had a small fracture that did not require surgery. Vanek’s fracture required surgery and he had his jaw wired shut. I’m not sure how you can say it was a smaller injury/

I really don’t think he’s being lazy he’s just been playing scared. Like Bflo said, his frustration is palpable you can tell that he really feels the weight of his contract on his back. I feel bad for the guy.

He’s been warming up lately, hopefully the break will do him some good.

If anyone on the team needed to just “get away from it all” for a week or so its Vanek. He was playing well but the relaxation should be good for him. Im expecting a different vanek when he comes back. We’ve got 22 games left. Im expecting 10 goals and 5 assists from him. Sounds a little crazy, just call it a gut feeling.

It's not out of the question

As the power play goes than so does Vanek. Vanek will not create too many chances on his own but he is a guy who can usually finish. He has had some bad luck this year but he has also had teammates struggle around him. Plus there was the time he spent with Kennedy and Grier, that won’t help a goal scorer score goals.

Ironically they were

they were able to generate some offense but you have to think that Vanek would have been even better on a line with better offensive players.

I wonder why Vanek hasnt played more with Connolly thru out the year. I know the “Connechtville” – credit to someone in sharks game thread cant remember who tho, has been playing well. But vanek is our best natural goal scorers on the team and Connolly has great vision and passing, they should be together. I think of, to a lesser extant of course, joe thorton and patrick marleau or heatly. Connolly to Vanek – Thorton to marleau.

“As the power play goes than so does Vanek”
Very true. Since the power play has been improving so has Vanek’s point totals. He needs a centerman who can get him the puck and Roy hasn’t been doing that for the most part this season. Putting Vanek with a hot Connolly would probably be a wonderment, but at what cost?

The key is that we’re short of quality centermen and it needs to be addressed.

the information i got was from the hockey news website so it's not as if i just pulled them out of a random site

the site said alfredsson broke his jaw and vanek had just a jaw injury. I don’t know if they made a mistake or what.

by Rafal Ladysz on Feb 16, 2010 8:34 PM EST reply actions

They definitely did

Vanek had a very serious injury

I always feel like the Hockey News has an agenda. I find it entertaining but don’t trust their information.

The bottomline is this: Lindy needs to stop putting him on line with average at best players like Grier and Kennedy and instead put him on line with Connolly and Pominville and then move Hecht to a line with Stafford and Roy.

Of course, Thomas needs to get a hold of his confidence-issues, because that’s all it’s about imo. The guy can score a ton of goals, but the mental side of the game is something he needs to get much better at to improve himself as a player.

He was getting nothing done with both Roy and Connolly early in the season. Neither of them were playing well and it translated to Vanek. Putting him with Kennedy and Griere actually jump-started his game. The key was that then Kennedy was playing well. Now, not so much. So, with a more productive Connolly line (an understatement) and Derek Roy beginning to put his game back together, it’s now worthwhile to put Vanek up with Roy. The issue now is that Stafford needs to get his head out of his ass and start hitting people to open up the ice for the other two. If he won’t do that, trade him for someone who will, even if they have worse hands.

If they dont throw Vanek with Connolly, which I think they should… What about a Vanek – Roy – Grier line? Unless we make a trade for a real power forward. I dont like Stafford playing with Vanek. Idk what it is… I just dont like those two on a line.

That was a fun line to watch. And yes I agree with your below statement as well.

I completely agree on Drew Stafford. The Oilers have been interested in him forever and if we could get Lubomir Visnovsky and Ethan Moreau or perhaps we could trade Stafford and a second-rounder for Dustin Penner.

If Vanek dominates in the playoffs, everyone will overlook his regular season slump. That’s what I’m hoping for, at least.
