The Buffalo Sabres heard something tonight they haven't heard all season, cheering at the end of a home game. With Thomas Vanek's overtime game winner, the Buffalo Sabres win their first home game in eight tries. The Sabres put together a solid effort both offensively and defensively against the current best team in the NHL, the Washington Capitals.
The star of this game was Thomas Vanek. Two goals on the night including a highlight reel goal that will be seen over and over again for years to come. In fact, it is so pretty, it needs to be seen here. With the immortal words of Rick Jeanneret:
Ryan Miller had a good game after a shaky first ten minutes which saw a puck squeak behind him after he thought he covered it and an interesting goal from the Washington Capitals:
Once Miller made the save of the season thus far on Alexander Ovechkin, he settled in and played a decent game. Miller finished the game with 23 saves on 25 shots. Here is the save on Ovechkin:
Speaking of Ovechkin, the Sabres kept him under wraps for most of the night. In his 17:38 of ice time, he registered one shot and also had one missed shot. For a player that averages 4.5 shots/game, being held to one shot on goal is a testament to how well this defense played tonight. Besides a few miscues, the defense played a solid game from all six defensemen on the ice. When Rivet comes back, he may not find a spot back in the lineup if the team continues to play this well.
