Sabres 3 Leafs 2: Myers and Miller Shine in Sabres Victory

The Buffalo Sabres extended their win streak to six games with a great road home win against a desperate team. Everyone knew the Leafs were going to play with a purpose tonight and the Sabres did just enough to win. The Leafs had three first period power plays that were killed off by the Sabres penalty killers. The Sabres answered with two power play goals in the first period after Tim Connolly was cut with a high stick.

Tyler Myers had a power play goal in the first and he added a second power play goal in the second period. Both power play goals were the result of pinching in at the perfect time. Myers looks more like a veteran on the ice instead of a 19 year-old rookie.

The Leafs never gave up and pinned the Sabres in their zone for most of the third period. Toronto managed to score twice in the third period but Miller turned away 20 shots in the third period. Miller made a career high 48 saves in the game and was the biggest reason the Sabres extended their win streak to six games.

Is it just me, or is Myers turning into the PP quarterback? He is all over the offensive zone.
Great game; Ryan Miller continues his mastery of everything. A few lazy giveaways, but mostly a solid effort.

Lalime vs. the Avs… can they go for 7 straight?

Good game boys! Myers, what can you say? The kids impressive. And Miller career high saves, thats pretty cool. I like that quote from him after the game regarding Toronto too.

Lets have a strong outing behind Lalime tonight, get him his 200th win and get ready for this road trip.

Myers broke up maybe a half a dozen Toronto plays with that long reach of his. He was a big time Toronto momentum killer. I’ll put it out there that Tyler Myers may be a big part of the reason that this team is doing so much better than last year. Go Sabes!

And to think I was nervous about losing Spacek in the offseason. Myers you have single-handidly got my over those nerves very fast and continue to exceed expectations from me.

They REALLY hate Myers over at PPP. I was just reading some old stuff on their site. I find it delightful because it’s pretty obvious that the only reason they don’t like him is because he’s really good. They saw that firsthand last night.

no, it isnt.
Last night was the first game against the Leafs where Myers played well.
and most of us dont HATE Myers per say, but hate having him cramed down our throats 40 times a game when he was clearly playing like shit.
Is Myers good? Sure, he’s having a great rookie season and may turn out to be a damned good defensemen. Is he slober all over good like Crosby or ovechkin was this year? No he isnt, and he shouldnt be paraded around as such

Playing Defense is about more than goals and assists

Myers is playing over 22 minutes a game, quarterbacks the power play and leads the team in blocked shots. He had an average game the last time but he has been good in every other Leafs game. Every time he makes a little mistake you guys at PPP are all over it but nobody wants to admit that he is the best defenseman on a team that has beaten you five times this season.

Like i said, he is a good player. But other than last night i have seen nothing special either offensively OR defensively from Myers. While I don’t catch many Buffalo games, I’ll take your word on him playing well in the ones I have seen.
Of course we point out his mistakes, he is A) an opposing player B) on a team that always beats us C) getting his back patted every time he does anything well by the leaf announcers and the talking heads during the intermission D) being compared insistently to our own young stud defenseman in Luke Schenn who is having a softmore slump (they should be comparing rookie seasons) and E) he has become a running joke, which has little to do with him and more to do with one of your own coming over and praising Myers as the second coming of Bobby Orr.
The likly hood of a Myers Joke at PPP being because of hatred for him is pretty low and is actually more likely to be on account of it being a cheap laugh

You can blame your dislike of him on whatever you want. If you’re being honest with yourself – the real reason you don’t like Myers is because he IS good. Which, coincidentally, is why lots of pundits are saying he might or should win the Calder trophy.

You claim you’ve seen nothing special from him and then say you don’t watch many games. Well the games we can assume you have seen include the one last night. I’d say he looked pretty good offensively and defensively.

And lastly, if you want to compare rookie seasons between Schenn and Myers guess who’s still coming up short. 14 points and a minus 12 on the year, not very impressive. Myers is a plus 9 with 26 points. Hell, Myers has more points this year then Schenn has in both of his years.

This contest is over..

by toomanyblues on Jan 9, 2010 1:35 PM EST up reply actions

Here's a thought.

Put the game on mute and tune your computer to the Sabres radio broadcast. There will probably be less slobbering.

But other than last night i have seen nothing special either offensively OR defensively from Myers. While I don’t catch many Buffalo games, I’ll take your word on him playing well in the ones I have seen.

That’s just kinda retarded. That’s like me saying the MONSTAAAR is worse than Vesa because I saw him give up 6 goals in his last game. I could actually take your word that he’s going to be great but unlike Myers the stats don’t prove that.

D) being compared insistently to our own young stud defenseman in Luke Schenn who is having a softmore slump (they should be comparing rookie seasons)

Fair enough, this is the internet you know. Though you’d probably be better off sticking with the sophomore slump excuse.

In 70 games Schenn had 12 assists and 2 goals for 14 points and was a -12.
In 43 games Myers has 20 assists and 6 goals for 26 points and is a +9.

In his rookie season Schenn averaged 21:32 TOI.
In his rookie season Myers averaged 23:06 TOI.

Schenn, I’m only guessing due to stats unless the Leafs PP was absolutely atrocious last year, did not play on the 1st team PP and managed only 1 PPG and 0 PPA.
Myers is currently playing 1st team PP mins and has 3 PPG & 6 PPA.

Schenn blocked 80 shots in 70 games.
Myers has blocked 56 shots in only 43 games.

Schenn was doing this while playing for a team willing to sell their soul for Tavares.
Myers is doing this while playing for a team with the 3rd most points in the NHL.

E) he has become a running joke, which has little to do with him and more to do with one of your own coming over and praising Myers as the second coming of Bobby Orr.

MONSTER! Also a team of Kessels could beat a team of the Russians and Canadians combined in the Olympics, with that team putting 10 players on the ice.

The likly hood of a Myers Joke at PPP being because of hatred for him is pretty low and is actually more likely to be on account of it being a cheap laugh

I used to believe you, I truly did. But you’ve crossed over to denial for the sake of the “joke” now. Myers dominated the game last night. In both ends. And you know it.

by twoeightnine on Jan 9, 2010 1:44 PM EST up reply actions

not getting it. at all.
Myers had an EXCELLENT game last night, he has very good stats. and looks like an excellent late first round draft steal.
Did I say that he sucked? No, I said that while he was having terrible games against the Leafs we were bombarded with how amazing he was, I am fully willing to accept he is having a bad game or two as he is a rookie, but I don’t need to hear about how amazing his defensive play is right after he has a give away that leads to it at all.
The Schenn VS Myers comparison pisses us off because they are comparing an excellent rookie season on a good team to a mediocre second season on a terrible team. It makes more sense to compare their rookie seasons, even if Myers comes out on top at least it is a comparison I could live with. Right now Myers is the better defenseman, whatever.
The thing about being a sports fan is you are allowed to have an irrational hatred or two. I’m sure you all have a few.
Now if we are going to talk about players leaf fans hate because they are good, we can talk about Ryan Miller

But that’s the point, you hatred isn’t irrational. It’s based on the fact that Myers IS good. I would hate him too – if he played for you guys and we could have drafted him.

isnt hatred of something because it is good irrational?

Puns, Innuendo and Bad Spelling, Yes We Got That

by JaredFromLondon on Jan 9, 2010 2:13 PM EST up reply actions

Not in sports. In sports you hate the guys that are good because the guys who aren’t don’t matter. Does anyone hate Nathan Paetsch? I mean as our 8th defenseman I don’t think he’s really drawing ire from anyone. Myers is our first and best defenseman, to me it makes sense for someone else to dislike him.

by TEMSON on Jan 9, 2010 2:16 PM EST up reply actions

But you're not getting it at all.

Because the Toronto coverage blows him you go out of your way to give him blue balls. When has hockey coverage in Toronto ever been rational?

You yourself said “But other than last night i have seen nothing special either offensively OR defensively from Myers.” You know damn well the only reason that is is because you’ve only seen him 4 times. The kid is the leader (or in the top 2/3) for the Calder for a reason.

I have plenty of irrational hatred, but sadly none of it is for the Leafs anymore. They’re like your friend’s snot nosed little brother who just took home a participation medal in the Special Olympics and even then had to trade a ton of draft picks for it.

by twoeightnine on Jan 9, 2010 2:21 PM EST up reply actions

Thanks for that last part, I was thinking that myself. I mean if I wanted to argue about this it would have been very easy for me to post a comment over there. Something along the lines of “Myers is the best rookie defenseman” or “Myers is the best defenseman on a team that has beaten the Leafs 10 times in a row” would have been sure to cause a raucous. But now it seems we can’t even post stuff about Myers on our own site without having it rebuked. That doesn’t sound like a joke anymore.

I didn’t call you out. I made an observation. If it’s a joke, why do you take so much offense when I said you hated him. Isn’t that the joke? You hate him, he sucks, the pundits are wrong?

If I wanted to argue, I would have made the same observation on your site.

I took no offense, I still havnt, I tried to explain the rational behind the “hatred” and seem to have failed in that respect.
I came to inform, not to argue, but whatever, if you guys think we hate him, have at it. Seems something is lost in translation

Solid effort tonight- Miller just fantastic! I’ve been trying to downplay my outlook for Myers, but the kid keeps raising the bar. Thought it was great how the Leaf fans were killing him on their boards before the game- Jealousy is a stinky cologne

Guess the boys wanted to give Miller some work knowing he’s getting tonight off.. I think the Leafs were pressing hard and we went into third period PK mode..

Does anyone have a rough tally of the scoring chances for each team in last night’s game? I know the shots were lopsided but what about the actual scoring chances?
