Getting some Yahoo! love...finally

We who follow the Sabres daily or even just caught a couple games on TV this season already knew how special Mr. Tyler Myers is.  For the rest of the general public they are just begining to find out.  The link above gives Tyler Myers some national media coverage.  About time.  I remember watching his first 9 games and enjoying the excitement and youth Myers brought to the Sabres.  I was screaming in favor of keeping Myers up when reading every article or watching Buffalo news coverage about whether Lindy should play him through the 10 game max or drop him back down.  It was nice to see his picture this morning when I brought up Yahoo NHL.

good post – but FYI – this could have been in the fanshots section…

regardless – comparing him to Ovechkin when he came into the league is pretty amazing – i have high hopes for him. He just needs to keep working hard – that’s the key

Compared to Ovie, then basically called a Chris Pronger / Scott Neidermayer hybrid. If he doesn’t get the Calder, I’ll eat my hat.

On a related note, I am not currently wearing a hat.

It seems like Myers has been getting plenty of national attention. Maybe not as much on the internet as on national broadcasts (CBC, Versus, TSN, etc). When teams play the Sabres, the media swoons over Myers. I think he gets his fair share of press. True, the NHL itself could do some more promoting, but I’m not going to complain. The guy is under enough pressure as it is, without having to live up to expectations of being the league’s next superstar.

If I were management I’d extend his contract long-term by the end of 2011. Wait for the slightest sign of a sophomore slump and lock him down.

tough to argue with that. he seems like he could be on our top defensive pairing for a long, long time

Yes, he has received

fantastic publicity on those networks you mentioned. Funny, I was just thinking about if the Sabres were considering signing him to a long-term now or whether they preferred to wait a bit.

Right now – 7 p.m. Friday, Yahoo has Ryan Miller and his USA helmet featured.

can they sign him long term now?

I’m not sure how rookie contracts work, but for some reason I have a feeling they can’t extend just yet. Hopefully my understanding is way off and they lock him up until 2025 or something ridiculous like that.

i think its better to wait until he is having some struggles so the price won’t be ridiculously high (if they signed him now, his agent would ask for 10 mil per year or more. waiting for vulnerability – probably next season – would give management more leverage to lower the price a bit. THEN lock him up long-term.)

Unfortunately they can't

They have to wait until he is in the final year of his rookie contract. Remember he is restricted when that happens. I’m guessing that like Vanek, they won’t let him get away.

lets hope the Oilers have the day off...

I would love to see Darcy’s head explode when the Oilers offer Myers a max contract for 10 years!!
