Where is Max?
Can anyone tell me why this guy wasn't signed for close to league minimum this year? Stuff like this makes me think Lindy Ruff is one of the most overrated coaches in the game.
Buffalo has always needed VALUE out of their players due to the small nature of the market. Max, who signed a one year, 800,000 dollar contract with the Thrashers, has 40 points in 45 games played.
Instead, we have players like Tim Kennedy (5 goals) and Patrick Kaleta (6 goals) as staples on our 3rd lines. What a joke.

Unless the head of the front office could see the future...
all they knew is that Affinogenov had played terribly with the Sabres the previous few years. He was a one dimensional forward that cost the team more often than benefited. Kennedy is a rookie and Kaleta is a different type of player. Max only had 16 goals in his last 2 years a a Sabre combined. This years Max is good (still a -8 though), the one we had was terrible.
Imagine all the great picks the Sabres would have had if they knew the future, but they don’t, which is why they go based on past success, which Afinogenov didn’t have.

Max?
Funny how we have players like Kennedy and Kaleta and we are in 1st, yet the last two years when Max was here we couldn’t make the playoffs. Coincidence? I think not. Atlanta is a hockey graveyard with no pressure and a no defense system and thats why Max is thriving. Where are the Thrashers? 15 points behind us. Regier and Ruff know what they are doing, thats why Lindy was picked to be a coach for Canada, the greatest hockey nation in the world. You’re gonna tell me Yzerman is a dummy? Again, i think not. Appreciate what we have here because there are a whole lot worse Coaches out there that couldn’t get half the results Lindy does with this team and budget.

and no defense system
Exactly, Max couldn’t fit into Lindy’s system as Buffalo has gone more defensive minded over the past couple seasons. We need players who buy into the team concept and not guys who are a liability on the defensive end. I still wouldn’t take Max on this team if Atlanta offered to trade him to us for nothing in return.

no way
why would you want a burnt out 30 year old who’s been hopping between russia and the nhl for 10 years over over a promising young scrappy playmaker like kennedy? Max used to be a fan favorite back when we played a flashy offensive style game, but when lindy changed the system so that everyone had to backcheck and play just as much defense as offense, max’s game struggled and he got frustrated with our organization and stopped producing. I guarantee he would not have 40 points for us because we don’t play the ‘pray the defense bails us out and throw the puck down ice to our goal scorers’ game. And look where we are compared to atlanta. Also, Lindy is the reason we are here. How many other teams play as a complete unit like us. Every team with 60+ points has at least 1 player with 20+ goals, except us. We’re top 5 on the pk and even though we had a terrible start on the pp we’re climbing the rankings and winning games because of the man advantage. Thanks to the coaching staff. They know what they’re doing and we should trust their judgement.

Both good offensive guys who put up points. However they both play a style of game that just kills their team. Funny how players like these make the allstar game but never win a championship.

Max is not a hockey player – plain and simple.
by krytime on Jan 15, 2010 8:02 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
c’mon, that’s just not right. He’s an incredible offensive talent he’s just never put it all together. He’s never figured out how to utilize his teammates. But from a skill standpoint you can’t deny his talents.
by JSCoope on Jan 15, 2010 10:14 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Skill and talent doesn't make him a hockey player.
It makes him an offensive show (that for the past two years was down right offensive.)
by twoeightnine on Jan 16, 2010 3:31 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
How does any of that make him “not a hockey player”?
by JSCoope on Jan 16, 2010 8:45 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I use the phrase “not a hockey player” to define a player who’s selfish. No doubt – Max has talent; oodles of it. But he won’t do the things that win tough games. He’ll end up on ESPN highlights (like that ridiculous goal he scored against TB early in his career) and even score some points. He’ll sell jerseys. One thing he won’t do is lead a team to a Cup.
by krytime on Jan 16, 2010 10:53 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
"Lead his team to a cup..."?
No one is saying you need to put a C on the front of his jersey. This guy is an ideal 3rd line player who is simply more athletic and talented than every other 3rd line player in the NHL. He would have THRIVED here if Ruff knew what he was doing.
- We are going to get smoked come playoffs because we don’t have enough offensive talent on this team. The more I watch, the more I realize its the same as those Hasek teams only we have a slightly less goaltender with Miller in net.
- I love how people bring up his knack for coughing up the puck and make it seem like the worst thing in the world. Hockey, UNLIKE basketball and football, favors playmakers who turn the puck over due to the fact that there are so few goals in a game. In the NBA, if you turn the ball over 10 times, the other team nets about 10 points. In the NHL if you turn the puck over 10 times, the other team nets ZERO goals. Max was such an assett on this team.
- Max was a playoff player. Sure, his stats weren’t great during the postseason, but he was a sick athlete who has decent size and knew when to flip the physical swich. The last time the Sabres made the playoffs, we looked like a high school hockey team going up against the Sens. The same thing will happen this year. Kennedy, Connoly, Roy, Pominville, and MacArther are all examples of players who do OK in the regular season and then kill you come postseason. Max was a playoff type athlete.
- Max was a shootout phenom. Part of the reason why the NHL sucks is because every 5th game ends in a cheap shootout which is designed to appease non hockey fans. We’ve been horrible this year. Max was great in shootouts.
by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Jan 16, 2010 11:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought we weren’t making the playoffs?
Yeah, you cough off the puck, it goes to the other end of the ice and then you’re playing defense. It would have been plain stupid to resign Max here given how he was playing. Should we have expected him to start lighting it up again? Maybe, but tossing money around waiting isn’t a great idea. If Darcy (not Lindy) is so damn stupid then why didn’t Max get some more offers?
Stop knocking Kennedy, dude… have you ever heard of a checking line? How about a player how hasn’t had 13 more goals scored against his team that by his team while on the ice.
Shootouts? Seriously? Who cares? One point I agree with you on… axe the shootout.

This guy is an ideal 3rd line player
No, he’s not. He’s a minus player; a defensive liability. Max has fantastic skating ability; he just doesn’t use it the right way. Never has, never will.
Ruff absolutely knows what he is doing. If Ruff were a FA, he’d be snapped up in less than 24 hours. As a FA, Max went practically the whole off season before he got an offer from a team that is not good. Again, if Max is such a talent, how come no one picked him up earlier when he could’ve been had for the vet minimum?
This made me laugh:
In the NHL if you turn the puck over 10 times, the other team nets ZERO goals.
I would appreciate an explanation on this one. It makes no sense at all.
Nor does this:
but he was a sick athlete who has decent size and knew when to flip the physical swich.
Decent size and knew when to flip the physical switch? That’s funny.
As far as Buffalo needing another goal scorer, I agree. I’ve been clamoring for another top six forward since the beginning of the season. I’m not sold on Stafford, MacCarthur, or Pominville. But no way I would take Max back. He doesn’t make good hockey plays. Max is a minus nine so far this year by the way.
Please provide Max shoot-out stats. I’m inclined to disagree that he was/is a shoot-out phenom. I’d reserve that for that bum Kotalik.
Max sold jerseys to sixteen year old girls. He made ESPN take notice once in awhile. But he’s not the kind of guy you can win a Cup with.

People are forgetting to address my main point…
Max signed a one year contract that was worth close to league minimum.
He has 40 points in 45 games.
We could have picked him up on the cheap, placed him on the 3rd line, and hoped he played like he did the past 4 years in Buffalo. Lets not foget, he was hampered by injuries during his last two years here. Instead, we like to pay the big bucks to players who have the bodies of 7th grade boys. Give me a break.
Ruff and Regier don’t know crap about hockey.

You’re forgetting to address the main point of everyone else here – we could have picked Max up for cheap and the 40 points he’s scored (theoretically) but we’d also have to live with the (approximately) 49 points he’d surrender on the ice (depending on how many of his points were scored during PPs, I don’t care enough to figure out the exact stats). You do know how +/- works, right? More goals are scored against his team than for his team when Max is on the ice at even strength. Why would the Sabres want to add that?
Max has never played a physical brand of hockey – ever. MacArthur, who you seem certain will underperform in the playoffs despite the fact that he’s never played a single playoff game in his young career, plays much more physically than Max ever has. In fact, your list of 5 players (Kennedy, Connolly, Roy, Pominville, and MacArthur) who will underperform in the playoffs is pretty ridiculous since two of those (Kennedy and MacArthur) have never played a single playoff game so you have no idea how they will do and two have actually done pretty well in the playoffs (during the 05-06 playoffs Connolly had 11 points in 8 games and Roy had 15 points in 18 games). Hell, even Pominville has done pretty well with 10 points in 16 games.
Calling Max a shootout phenom is plain old absurd. I actually think the only thing you said that was more absurd was the “Max is a playoff player” mostly because you actually follow that sentence with “sure, his stats weren’t great during the postseason”. It’s comical how boldly you contradict yourself while still expecting us to believe your argument.
Ruff and Regier have built a hockey team that is squarely in the playoffs and vying for a potential first place finish. I think you’re the one who doesn’t know crap about hockey.

Do you really think he would have the team first defensive commitment to play on this teams third line? You know, the commitment that currently has them tied for 2nd in the conference more than halfway through the season?
I still don’t understand what people think is so special with him. He averaged 15 goals a season for the last four years. That doesn’t make me say “wow.” This team is on pace to have between 8-10 of those guys, and it’s regarded as a defensive team.
He’s also on a team playing pond hockey on a line with a superstar heading into UFA. Christ, I could score goals in that situation. I’d probably be a minus 85 now, but I’d put up some points.
we like to pay the big bucks to players who have the bodies of 7th grade boys.
Makes no sense. Whom specifically are you referring to? I’ve met Max several times (and for the record, he is very polite), and he is tiny in my book. Like many athletes, he’s shorter than what he’s listed at, and weighs less (although I didn’t pick him up to verify that, even though I could’ve).

Everyone is missing...
Buffalo, which is a small market hockey town, needs “home run” type players. They need to sign guys for cheap who totally outperform their contracts. This is the ONLY way we are going to make a dent in the playoffs. Signing Max for cheap and crossing our fingers is a risk we had to have taken. If he hurts us then we didn’t spend much on him anyway. If he helps us then he turns a mediocre offense into a respectable one.
by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Jan 17, 2010 11:40 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
What everybody is saying is, essentially. Based on the last few years it would have been a bad decision to re-sign him (if he would’ve even wanted to stay in Buffalo). He wouldn’t have put up the same numbers in Buffalo as he is in Atlanta because he wouldnt have been playing with Kovy and Antropov and getting a lot of minutes and a lot of time on the power play.

"Home Run" Players are terrible for small-market teams
Because they outperform their contract for one year and then get signed for a boatload of money to New York or other Big-market teams, leaving the small-market team with no future. Buffalo needs the Gaustads, Mairs, Ellis’, Griers and Kennedys to round out the team for guys like Vanek, Connolly, and Roy. But if you want to keep arguing with all the other people on the site then go ahead. And how dare you disrespect Lindy Ruff.

I disagree with just about every comment in this thread
Is it possible for everyone to be partly right and partly wrong?
The Sabres ABSOLUTELY made the right move by letting Max walk. It was painfully obvious that Max did not fit into the Sabres system and he would not succeed here. He needs to be a top six forward to utilize his talent and that opportunity was not available in Buffalo, partly because there is no room for him but mostly because he found himself in the Lindy Ruff doghouse.
I still believe that Afinogenov was treated unfairly by Lindy Ruff but it happened and we move on. Afinogenov is an offensive player and needs to be put in an offensive position to succeed. In Buffalo he was placed on the fourth line with players like Ellis and Mair.
Afinogenov has found a home in Atlanta and he is taking advantage of his situation. We should just be happy for him and move on.

He had his days of support in Buffalo, we did everything we could to get him going again, but Max, Lindy, and the Sabres system just stopped clicking. I’m glad he’s found his niche and can enjoy playing the game again. And even more glad that we’ve moved on with players that fit our system. We barely have enough room on the roster right now, every game Lindy has to make decisions on who to scratch, and Max would just add frustration. Thankfully he got picked up though and can continue to do his own thing while barely affecting us.

This whole argument...
… is part of the reason Die By the Blade is losing the battle of the blogs on “theNHLarena”, and why I don’t come to Die By the Blade as much as I do the other blogs. The attitude, it’s condescending as hell. One guy expresses a view or opinion different than that of the consensus, and everyone jumps on him like a dog on a raw steak. I’m sure most of you (the notorious krytime being the worst I’ve seen so far) don’t even realize how condescending your responses are. The place is saturated with it.
Anyways, regarding Max: I think when people mention the final 2 shitty years he had in Buffalo, they forget that he led the team a year or two before that. Also, the fact he has more goals than anyone on our team is due to his current ice time (which Lindy didnt give him in Buffalo). I don’t think he should’ve been written off like that. Also, everyone is forgetting the fact that he was cheap as hell.
That’s all I’ve gotta say about Max though, haven’t been thinking about him as much as I’ve been thinking about how badly we could’ve used Dumont right now, and Kotalik (don’t even start) in the shootout. We are not doing well in the shootouts…

Believe it or not, I never mean to be condescending. If I ever am, I really do apologize. But when I truly believe in something, I will do whatever it takes to stand by my opinion.
I disagreed with some of the comments TrentHOF made wholeheartedly. In my opinion, how was Max a physical player, or even a playoff one at that? I just don’t get it. That’s what I called him out on. I never said Max didn’t have skill; just not the right skill set for this team as it moved away from the game they were playing after the lockout.
And come one…when someone just makes a statement like this:
Ruff and Regier don’t know crap about hockey.
And then does nothing to try and justify it, don’t they deserve a little bit of slack?
For the record – I’m glad Kotalik is gone. Sure he’d be nice in the shootouts, but that’s about it. I thought I read somewhere they’d love to run him out of NY already, with his -16 he’s got going on. That’s a dude that has ALL the skill in the world, but doesn’t use it. If he played with an ounce of passion, he’d be an All Star.

I could care less about “TrentHOF”, “Ron A”, “Tedrecommends”, “krytime” or whatever other screen name you are using. I stand by my suggestion that you and some other people here have to disagree with everything and jump whenever an opinion goes against the grain.
Personally, I wouldn’t take someone who thinks Trent Edwards will be in hall of fame, seriously.
Secondly, regarding the Leafs blog:
If you go to Pension Plan Puppets and identify yourself as a Sabres (or any other team) fan, you won’t even be able to converse with those people without having Brett Hull or “The city of Buffalo is a wasteland” comments flying up for absolutely no reason. We all know this, we’ve seen these elitist morons at Leafs @ Sabres games.
Having said that, I did not identify myself as a Sabres fan when I joined their blog. I wanted to find out why they hate Tyler Myers, because it was confusing the hell out of me why they would hate a 19yr old (now 20) rookie who works his tail off, hasn’t taken any cheap shots at any of the Leafs players, or said a bad thing about anyone. I asked what the deal was with Myers, and they ended up telling me that one of their announcers talked about him too much and that was the reason they hated him. As I told them how stupid of a reason that was, along with defending him in general, they figured out that I must have been a Sabres fan and as soon as that happened the conversation went south. So what is your point, bringing up “PPP”? Is it any surprise that Sabres fans get lyched in there? (and yes, Brett Hull insults were thrown out long before the convo ever went south)

Like I said earlier though, if someone is just gonna try and fan the flames, I’m going to call them out on it. And TrentHOF does just that. Ask the folks at Rumblings..
Wish you would have said this earlier:
Personally, I wouldn’t take someone who thinks Trent Edwards will be in hall of fame, seriously.
And you’re right, we don’t. We I think of this as a place for intelligent posts and the like. I’m so glad it hasn’t (and hopefully won’t) turn into a hockeybuzz like forum. Maybe that’s why some comments are jumped on so hard; call it self policing?
Bringing up PPP was unfair by me; my apologies. I just thought you were starting a “personal attack,” and I wasn’t going to let that happen. I went on there once – first time, last time. I can only imagine how they attacked you once they knew you were a Sabre fan (if they did know – I didn’t read through that whole thread).
I don’t know how long you’ve been on this site, but I can tell you this – I don’t pick a fight with anybody unless I feel it’s called for. If you just followed the comments associated with the aforementioned names, then I could see where you’re coming from. Trust me though – those were deserved. But they surely don’t represent my whole “body of work” here.
Please feel free to continue to add intelligent (or something resembling intelligent) comments to the site here; they are always welcomed. I really think DO has a good thing going with DBTB, and if he follows the “Galliford/Rumblings” model, this will easily be the best site to come to for Sabre discussion, if it’s not already (in my opinion at least). And no, I’m not getting a single penny for that plug…

Pension Plan Puppets rekindled a deep hatred I have for Leafs fans.
The conversation was still civil when “Brett Hull” and “Norwood” were mentioned by one of the main members (named “PPP”). It was totaly uncalled for and I asked what the point of bringing that up was. He replied, “I figured it was going to come up eventually anyway”. Wow.
Flyers fans have always been the worst and Canes/Thrashers/Lightning fans have always been the most ignorant, but Leafs and Pens fans this year have really climbed there way to the top of the “worst fans” list…

One more thing – you’re not friends with Ron A, are you?

I’m pretty sure this guy was making a joke with this post. I mean if I posted something like “Tim Connolly has been playing like shit for the last 15 games or so” I’d expect to catch some flak, until people realized I was having a laugh.

I don’t think he was though. My guess is he just likes to stir the pot. Heaven forbid you call people out on stuff like that though, or you’ll be labeled as condescending…

I guess you wouldn’t know a joke if it hit you in the face at 100mph.
