Sabres on Drew Stafford
Im sure im not the only Buffalo fan that loves Drew Stafford for all aspects of his game. Goals when they count and a creative young player to say the least. So why is Reiger waiting so long to sign him? Either Staff is being unreasonable (Doubt it) or Reiger is to patient. The patience that lost us Drury, briere, almost Vanek with that outragiuos offer from the oilers, and now Spacek. Is Spacek worth 3 years at 11 mil? NO! But besides the point, i feel like if we gave up a young player like Drew it would be a waste. His play over last year was inconsistant but then again so was the whole team. If we dont keep him then ok but lets not loose him for nothing like everyone else in the past.
What do you think?Buffalo Sabres

Yes he is being patient but I don’t think Stafford will be playing anywhere but Buffalo next season. I think the hold up is the number of years. When all is said and done he will probably sign a two year contract at around $2.75-$3 million.

I don't believe Bucky Gleason on the drury thing...and even if "patience" cost us Drury
this isn’t similar at all….this guy is not the centerpiece of the franchise and as long as its worked out before preseason…who cares

Roy’s contract is up in 2012-2013.
Stafford wouldn’t take 3 years at 3.8 million total and we wouldn’t pay in 3.8 million each year – that’s way too high.
Also, you can’t trade a player you don’t currently have under contract – such as Stafford.

Yeah, that’s around what MacArthur is getting paid… Stafford is a serious contributor. Look at D.O.‘s breakdown of the timing of Stafford’s goals. He’s number two to Vanek. He’ll come into his own and he does have the excuse of youth. He’s playing at or better than Kotalik’s level right now and he’s nowhere close to the ceiling of his potenial. He’ll sign around a 3 year, 5.5-6 million contract, I would like to see him here for 4 years because I do believe he will blossom.

I don’t think he’ll sign for much more then 2 years. He knows that he has a good chance to hit a big payday if he can keep improving in the next couple years. I’d be all for a 4 year contract but it seems unlikely to me.

Stafford’s an RFA so he has to sign a contract or be forced to sit out the entire year, per the CBA. If he thinks himself that valuable then he has to wonder why he hasn’t been offer-sheeted.
He’ll sign either a 1 year or 2 year contract on the eve of camp, for money that Regier sets the terms of. Every day he waits he loses leverage. The CBA is not kind to RFA’s attempting to hold out and Drew did himself no favors by disappearing when the team needed him most down the stretch, regardless of his overall numbers.
1 year, 2.5 mil max. or 2 years 4.8 mil total. If Regier pays him more than that this season, I’ll be upset. Stafford doesn’t deserve that much. Make him play for his UFA contract.
I love the CMac contract. It shows me that Clarke knows this is his best chance to cash in, since he’s accepted a QO previously, next year. For that reason alone, I think we’ll see his absolute best this year, whatever that may be.

They gave Hecht 3.525 million, and Pominville 5.3 million – don’t be too surprised if they overpay for Stafford. I could see him getting 3 million for a year – hopefully not more.

Stafford wont get that much because they are trying to save money when the cap supposedly goes down next year and they’ve seen what big contracts do to the player the next year

All I’m saying is don’t call it impossible. People said Connolly wouldn’t get a raise because of his injury history – sometimes things happen contrary to popular belief and even common sense.
