Sabres Sign Cowan
The Sabres announced today that they have signed unrestricted free agent Jeff Cowan. Cowan has played 413 games in the NHL with Calgary, Atlanta, L.A. and Vancouver but is now basically an AHL player. Cowan will add some depth to the Portland Pirates and will be an experienced player to call up in an emergency.
For mor on this signing you can check out Goose's Roost or DDouble Edge Sabres.
This is a good signing for the Pirates and will have no effect on the Buffalo Sabres this season. They signed Montador and Grier to help with the big club and Dipenta and Cowan will fill that role in Portland. A job well done Darcy!

What?
Why? What does this guy bring that Peters couldn’t provide? I know there has to be a plan, but it’s hard to see it right now. At this rate, the Sabres will have 40 forwards, and about as many teeth.
He has some hockey talent. Cowan has 47 goals is eight seasons and Peters has 4 goals in five seasons. I think we know why the Sabres would be interested in bringing him in. Keep in mind that he won’t play one minute with the Sabres this season. This was strictly a Portland signing.

agreed
I definitely think it’s better to have someone (even if he is just for Portland and a possible call up for injury) with some talent. As for Peters, I have become pretty sure over the last couple seasons that he doesn’t even know what a puck is. I am all for fighting, when there is a purpose, but to have someone on the roster who serves only that purpose is a waste of cap space.
Good pickup
I have to agree with DO on this one AJ. Cowan provides the ability to skate, pass, shoot, score. You know, actual hockey skills. Peters is only good for fighting, which to be perfectly honest, he’s not that good at.
At this rate, the Sabres will be able to field 12 forwards who can be relied on to play hockey at all parts of the game, not 11.

nice sign
will replace loosing Mathie Darche to the Canadiens. Good sign for Portland and a good depth player if need be
Got some work to do before being a playoff team let alone a contender again!

D.O.’s observation is the salient one… Cowan was signed to police Portland. This franchise has been perennially beset by injuries since Regier tooled it to produce higher skill over physical brawn. Having a couple of extra policemen around should give our skill guys at both levels more room and have fewer worries about getting knocked out for a few weeks. Cowan was adored in Vancouver for his hustle and energy. Seems like a great locker room guy.
