Top 30 Unrestricted Free Agents: 29 Francois Beauchemin

On top of the draft happening in a few weeks, open season for free agents begins July 1st.  From now until then, we will take a look at the top 30 unrestricted free agents and determine if they will fit on the Sabres.  The list comes from The Fourth Period.

Francois Beauchemin

#23 / Defenseman / Anaheim Ducks

G A P +/- PIM
2008 - Francois Beauchemin 4 1 5 -3 12

Key Stat:  Beauchemin only played 20 games this season due to a torn MCL that happened in mid November.  From that point, Beauchemin was averaging 24:54 minutes/game.

The Good:  Beauchemin is a very good defenseman in his own end.  In the 20 games that he ended up playing this season, he averaged 1.3 hits/game and 1.25 blocked shots/game.  His quality of competition is tied for the highest on the team with Scott Niedermayer and was only a -3 in 20 games with the Ducks.

The Bad:  Beauchemin is coming off of a knee injury that he may not be fully recovered from.  At 29, Beauchemin's recovery may take a little longer but he should be able to be ready for the start of the season.

2008-09 Salary:  $1,650,000

Verdict:  Beauchemin would probably be a great addition on the blueline especially if Jaroslav Spacek does not resign.  He is expected to get a raise so could feasibly come in at the same price as Spacek and is six years younger.  If Spacek stays with the team, there may not be enough room for a player like Beauchemin unless some assests are traded.

I feel as though Beauchemin would be a massive FA bust on the Sabres. He’s not a great player on his own and we don’t have the defensemen to support him. I’d much rather see the money go to Spacek who can play 1-2 more years here before our future defensemen are (hopefully) good to go.
