The Devils just got a little bit better in the addition of Niclas Havelid. Havelid has 2 goals and 15 points on the season. The Devils added some defensive depth to their roster and with the level that they are playing at now, it makes the Devils just that more dangerous in the Eastern Conference. For the Thrashers, they unload an unrestricted defenseman in return for a rookie defenseman who could pay dividends in return.
The effect on the Sabres isn't going to be much unless they find a groove and shoot to the 6th or 7th spot in the conference. The Devils should finish either 2nd or 3rd in the conference and they are going to be tough to beat with the return of Martin Brodeur back in the lineup. The Thrashers aren't much of a factor due to the fact that we only play them once more this season.
It means that a defenseman comes off the block as well. If the Sabres are going to make any moves, they are probably going to target a defenseman to add some veteran depth to a young blueline. Havelid would have been an alright pickup for the Sabres but I'm not sure that we would have had anything the Thrashers would have wanted.
