All year this team was consistently inconsistent. Win streaks followed by losing streaks. Giving up goals after scoring them. Players going on pont scoring streaks (Roy/Connolly) and then disappearing. The defense playing well and then taking half the season off. Ever since January it was apparent to me this team wasn’t very good and getting into the playoffs would only be a revenue generator for Golisano and not anything meaningful for the organization. Finally, today put the nail that has been coming for months in this team and the fans are unhappy.

There is a sense that something has to give. Management, players, combo of the 2? I still have faith that if the AHL guys round into form and the core gets back into form, this team could be the danger and the power in the EC but that is still a year away. So what to do in the interim because the last 2 seasons have been basically mirror images of each other in terms of efforts and results and no one wants to make it a third season in a row before things start to click.

I say, don’t sign any of the Sabs UFAs and only make an offer to Stafford of the RFAs. Then, get in defensemen (finally, please! [Rivet excepted]) and some other components on short term deals while continuing to develop the young guys. The only way it can work in the short term, in my humble estimation, is to be very aggressive with the UFAs. Anything less than that and expect more of the same next year.

Still- Go Sabres!

The population of Pominville keeps rising!

I still believe

Yes, call me crazy but I still believe. This team needs a huge adjustment in the off season but I’m believer the summer is further away. There is some good news.

Say what you want about Miller being missed, but this uderachieving team has been playing with some level of desperation and if they continue to do so, still have a glimpse of a chance to make the playoffs. Yes, the playoffs. I still believe and I said it in the Buffalo News blog. However, changes need to be made sooner rather than later. And I mean before Wed. game vs. Fla., a team we can and have beat. and who are in 9th.

Darcy and Ruff must go. Yes, before Wed. The way Ruff looks I wouldn’t want to play for him either. And call it handcuffing or hand tieing, but Regier is stuck in the first season and half after the lockout where lightning fast Sabres raised the eyebrows of folks across the continent and the hockey world. Now, we need size and gritt. The other teams reacted. Look where they are and where we are. Darcy still likes finesse players. Look at the trade for 6" 1’ Moore and the resigning of Connelly.

Here’s why I believe we’re going to make the playoffs. Becuase its between 8th Montreal, Florida at 9th and us. And its fairly close. The other teams are too far away. NY has 84 points and they’re in 7th. Yeah, that’s who we lost to last night.

With ten games left, now is the time for the other teams to lose and for us to get help from the outside. HERE"S THE GOOD NEWS: We play those teams this week. We’re up vs. Fla. Wed, then the leafs, then the 8th place and stuggling habs on sat. After that, Atlanta. Then we face Ovie and the caps. So, that’s the next 5 contests.

Also, Florida lost to the Blue Jackets and their next game is vs. Carolina. After that game, they play Philly. If the Sabres can finally win a couple of games, we could be tied for 9th by next Friday. The Panthers have only won one, lost three and lost in a Shoot out in the last five. The Sabres were one of the Panthers losses.

Then there’s Gainey’s Habs who are limping and without a coach. You want good news, right ? The Habs haven’t won in 5 straight including two shoot out losses. And they played the Isles, the Sens and the Leafs. Yes, two of their losses were to the Devils and the Drury-lead Rangers. But, if you think we’re sinking fast. The Habs are diving like its the 3 Meter dive at the Olympics. A perfect 10 !

So, the Habs play Atlanta who played pretty good vs. us and with out Kovalchuck, then the Bolts then we play them next Sat. night, after that Montreal hosts Chicago and finally the Isles will host them. Let’s cross our fingers. We need help from our foes more than ever now. But first we need to help ourselves and win some games.

Before all that, its not us that need to believe, which some of us still do, but its the players in the Buffalo Sabres locker room who must believe in the team. I hope they do. I still believe just not in Regier or Ruff anymore.

Hecht, Tallinder, and Lydman must go. Around the “core” of Roy, Vanek and Pominville and the others you bring in a veteran center with some size so these guys can operate. They are good hockey players. They just need the spark on offense
