Game Notes
- Ex-Sabre Danny Briere is
questionableout for the game tonight. How many games has he played since he left. For all the Connolly jokes we hear, why don't we hear more about Briere? - Max Afinogenov is expected back in the lineup tonight after taking a hard hit on Friday night against the Coyotes.
- The Sabres are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference but have games in hand on the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers.
- Patrick Lalime is expected to start in goal for the Sabres tonight after allowing six goals against Ottawa on Saturday.
- Sabres have lost to the Flyers twice this season and have been outscored 9-3 in the two games.
- I won't be in the game thread tonight but feel free to chat it up.

Go Sabres!
D.O., your comment “Patrick Lalime is expected to start in goal for the Sabres tonight after allowing six goals against Ottawa on Saturday” is very harsh-sounding.
Stop being so quick to quit on our goaltenders!
Having said that, i would like to see what Tellqvist looks like some time! I’d also like to see a bunch of goals tonight against our old buddy Martin Biron. Sorry, Marty, but we need this game more than you.
This week could make or break us, playoff-wise……we’ll see.
Not sure if it will make or break us completely, but we can’t afford to fall 5 points behind 8th place.
With what would be 15 games to go, it would be fairly difficult to make up. But we do have two games against the Panthers this month and another game against the Hurricanes.

This is why I said "could"
because if we lose to the Flyers and then Florida Thursday, we’d be in deep do-do.

At this point, the Flyers aren’t catchable. Seven points behind with the Flyers having two games in hand. Losing to Florida would be an issue.

Losing tonight does hurt
hurts us trying to catch the teams right ahead of us. We aren’t worried about catching Philly; it’s the other teams.

Any loss hurts, in fact Sports Club Stats says that losing this game will decrease our chance of making the playoffs by 10.1%

I know that we usually have a hard time cracking Biron so it will be interesting to see if we can put some goals in.

Well that didn’t take very long at all.

Hi all....
Lalime was underwhelming Saturday. I’m chalking it up to back-to-back nights with a backup goalie who was unsustainably hot prior to Saturday.
What we need is some offense.
And Maxie(!) answers that hope. Now guys, hold them for more than a minute please.
Replay shows it was off his skate but not anything close to a kicking motion.
Can I at least sort of like the Wachovia Center for the ingenuity of using the Mercenaries 2 theme song as a lead in to a power play

That was like 2 inches between Philly needing to tag up
and the faceoff in our end. Damn.
guess who scored?
i’ll give you a hint… he was on the trading block and got his 3rd goal of the season tonite.
So at this point, anyone want to venture a guess on when Tellqvist is going to get a start.
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions
i can’t fault Lindy for going with Lalime Saturday. Hot goalie.
Can’t fault him for going with Lalime tonite. Let’s see if he’s still in a groove.
Guess I’m thinking it all depends on when Miller returns. I hear Portland is still short on goalies!
I guess I think it's tough enough to get one true backup goalie to find a groove.
If we’re down 4-0 after 30 minutes tonite I’d pull him, but thr truth is both goalies will be stiing or worse once Miller is healthy.
i just watch and cheer
i never second guess
Joan
Isnt that the story of the season, play well for five minutes and then stink for the next five.

I hate when the game is on this damn channel.
I’ve had burnt toast that more lively then these two guys. ughhh
I think the one thing that drives me nuts the most about this network is the in-game interviews on the bench.
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions
Okay...
Need to see a replay on that crash into Lalime. But let’s assume he was checked into our goalie and no penalty.
Why no whistle with the goal at a 45 degree angle to the goal line for 10-15 seconds?
I wish Lindy would have simply looked at her like "WTF kind of question was that?"
And then say “I like that we’re up 1-0.”
I don't think any national game has replays in it, NBC doesn't show any either

yeah tell me about it.
That and Keeley trying to make him run

I knew it was hooking, but wasn't sure what team
until the refs announced it
Good to see that both teams are liking the stupid penalties
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:45 PM EDT up reply actions
cant help but get nervous
to many pp for them in a row
Joan
Figured that was going to bite us in the butt. Deja vu from the last game?
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions
yeah, too late
and let the guy stand there all alone. Lalime had no chance.
by ccthemovieman on Mar 10, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions
Nothing is a bigger momentum killer than giving up a goal in the last minute of a period.

Anybody find an issue with an NHL Network free preview commercial that happened last week?

dont know
not sure what your talking about
Joan
It was just played on Versus, no big deal
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions
Moore seems to be consistently out of position on the power play.

This lazy play that the Sabres have started to play is getting really fun to watch.
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions
had some errands to take care of
looks like i didn’t miss too much – did catch one Lalime save though… he’s back in form?
The Flyers are just that much better right now at backchecking

Out of town scores
FLA-PITT tied 1-1 with 12:54 left in the 2nd
MON ahead of EDM 1-0 with 13:13 left in the 2nd
Ouch.
Glad VS was focused on important things like the game at hand.
VS
has a bad habit of doing that….
MHH: Like the Avs organization, we’ve now officially lost our minds.

Nothing sucks momentum worse than a first/last minute goal. The Sabres dont have the spunk to come back from this
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:59 PM EDT reply actions
Non-playoffs here we come. Maybe we can factor into the Tavares sweepstakes somehow.
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions
how can you consistantly pass to the other team and not your temmate and how can you constantly let them take the puck away from you and not even try to get it back that’s what i’m seeing all game
Joan
Well.....we're done now
the season is slipping away fast
by ccthemovieman on Mar 10, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Aren’t they always. At least we can figure out who we want to root for in the playoffs now.
by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions
I feel you guys…We Avs fans have been looking at that scenario for a few weeks now.

I'm so tired of losing here in WNY
A couple of years ago, the year after the lockout, it was exciting with the Sabres…..but that’s been about it in recent years.
Can T.O. skate?

glad i won’t be awake when DO is watching this.

not giving up - particularly on the season
(1) just 3+ days ago we were on a two game winning streak
(2) it’s about the schedule…. next three games are home for FLA and ATL, then on the road in OTT
yeah yeah i know, we cant beat OTT. but we’re due.
besides i gotta hold up my image as the optimist.
We did this at the trade deadline last season, played well for the first few games and then tanked. And as I write this, could it get any worse.

When Telqvist hits the ice, it’s time to change the channel.

was that a hit on Laleta some 5 seconds after the whistle?
being Versus we’ll never know
ah, i stand corrected
so – Kaleta is called for diving? you got to be kidding!
Panthers
scored three times in the second period at Pittsburgh against a red-hot Pens team.
Why can’t we do things like that?
