Game Notes

  • Ex-Sabre Danny Briere is questionable out for the game tonight.  How many games has he played since he left.  For all the Connolly jokes we hear, why don't we hear more about Briere?
  • Max Afinogenov is expected back in the lineup tonight after taking a hard hit on Friday night against the Coyotes.
  • The Sabres are currently in 10th place in the Eastern Conference but have games in hand on the Pittsburgh Penguins and New York Rangers.
  • Patrick Lalime is expected to start in goal for the Sabres tonight after allowing six goals against Ottawa on Saturday.
  • Sabres have lost to the Flyers twice this season and have been outscored 9-3 in the two games.
  • I won't be in the game thread tonight but feel free to chat it up.

Go Sabres!

D.O., your comment “Patrick Lalime is expected to start in goal for the Sabres tonight after allowing six goals against Ottawa on Saturday” is very harsh-sounding.

Stop being so quick to quit on our goaltenders!

Having said that, i would like to see what Tellqvist looks like some time! I’d also like to see a bunch of goals tonight against our old buddy Martin Biron. Sorry, Marty, but we need this game more than you.

This week could make or break us, playoff-wise……we’ll see.

by ccthemovieman on Mar 10, 2009 6:48 PM EDT reply actions

Not sure if it will make or break us completely, but we can’t afford to fall 5 points behind 8th place.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:17 PM EDT up reply actions

With what would be 15 games to go, it would be fairly difficult to make up. But we do have two games against the Panthers this month and another game against the Hurricanes.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:18 PM EDT up reply actions

This is why I said "could"

because if we lose to the Flyers and then Florida Thursday, we’d be in deep do-do.

by ccthemovieman on Mar 10, 2009 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions

At this point, the Flyers aren’t catchable. Seven points behind with the Flyers having two games in hand. Losing to Florida would be an issue.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:57 PM EDT up reply actions

Losing tonight does hurt

hurts us trying to catch the teams right ahead of us. We aren’t worried about catching Philly; it’s the other teams.

by ccthemovieman on Mar 10, 2009 8:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Any loss hurts, in fact Sports Club Stats says that losing this game will decrease our chance of making the playoffs by 10.1%

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:13 PM EDT up reply actions

I know that we usually have a hard time cracking Biron so it will be interesting to see if we can put some goals in.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 6:59 PM EDT reply actions

hi let’s go buffalo

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 7:09 PM EDT reply actions

Well that didn’t take very long at all.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:13 PM EDT reply actions

Hi all....

Lalime was underwhelming Saturday. I’m chalking it up to back-to-back nights with a backup goalie who was unsustainably hot prior to Saturday.

What we need is some offense.

And Maxie(!) answers that hope. Now guys, hold them for more than a minute please.

Replay shows it was off his skate but not anything close to a kicking motion.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:15 PM EDT reply actions

Can I at least sort of like the Wachovia Center for the ingenuity of using the Mercenaries 2 theme song as a lead in to a power play

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:17 PM EDT reply actions

was there a penalty i missed i hate these announcers and this station

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 7:20 PM EDT reply actions

yes

Tallinder for hooking.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:22 PM EDT up reply actions

or should I have put it “hooking”? Wouldn’t have been called 7 years ago.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

who got the penalty

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 7:21 PM EDT reply actions

hey all

Sabres strike first. sweet

by HO on Mar 10, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

guess who scored?

i’ll give you a hint… he was on the trading block and got his 3rd goal of the season tonite.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:23 PM EDT up reply actions

So at this point, anyone want to venture a guess on when Tellqvist is going to get a start.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:23 PM EDT reply actions

I thought it would have been tonight.

"I could have conquered Europe, all of it, but I had women in my life." - King Henry II of England

by Calvert on Mar 10, 2009 7:24 PM EDT up reply actions

i can’t fault Lindy for going with Lalime Saturday. Hot goalie.

Can’t fault him for going with Lalime tonite. Let’s see if he’s still in a groove.

Guess I’m thinking it all depends on when Miller returns. I hear Portland is still short on goalies!

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:25 PM EDT up reply actions

I guess I think it's tough enough to get one true backup goalie to find a groove.

If we’re down 4-0 after 30 minutes tonite I’d pull him, but thr truth is both goalies will be stiing or worse once Miller is healthy.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:28 PM EDT up reply actions

Its good to see us crashing the net

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:25 PM EDT reply actions

good save and no rebound

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 7:26 PM EDT reply actions

Isnt that the story of the season, play well for five minutes and then stink for the next five.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:29 PM EDT up reply actions

I hate when the game is on this damn channel.

I’ve had burnt toast that more lively then these two guys. ughhh

by HO on Mar 10, 2009 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

I think the one thing that drives me nuts the most about this network is the in-game interviews on the bench.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions

Okay...

Need to see a replay on that crash into Lalime. But let’s assume he was checked into our goalie and no penalty.

Why no whistle with the goal at a 45 degree angle to the goal line for 10-15 seconds?

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:30 PM EDT reply actions

no

play good for one period then fall apart

by qdloser on Mar 10, 2009 7:31 PM EDT reply actions

They did show a replay of Max’s goal so I know they can….

Haven’t watched the alternate Pittsburgh network – still can’t figure out what NBC stands for – in over two seasons.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:36 PM EDT up reply actions

well this was a bad pp

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 7:35 PM EDT reply actions

SIDE NOTE....

I think by weeks end we will have a walker!!!

by HO on Mar 10, 2009 7:38 PM EDT reply actions

nice rush by Roy… good pass to Max… and Biron saw it the whole way.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:41 PM EDT reply actions

that was a flying stick – a whole stick!

and what? a replay of that shot?

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:42 PM EDT reply actions

cant help but get nervous

to many pp for them in a row

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 7:45 PM EDT reply actions

so the announcer says

“not a good penalty there”.

Is there such thing as a good penalty!? Dumb ass.

by HO on Mar 10, 2009 7:45 PM EDT reply actions

Figured that was going to bite us in the butt. Deja vu from the last game?

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

my HD froze up when they scored – the overhead replay made it look like Rivet was out of position?

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 7:47 PM EDT reply actions

yeah, too late

and let the guy stand there all alone. Lalime had no chance.

by ccthemovieman on Mar 10, 2009 7:51 PM EDT up reply actions

Nothing is a bigger momentum killer than giving up a goal in the last minute of a period.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 7:48 PM EDT reply actions

we were playing to lazy to hold on to a one goal lead they better get some pep in this break

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 7:48 PM EDT reply actions

ummmm

did I loose everyone!?

by HO on Mar 10, 2009 8:11 PM EDT reply actions

No…we’re a pretty loose bunch to begin with.

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

Anybody find an issue with an NHL Network free preview commercial that happened last week?

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:15 PM EDT reply actions

dont know

not sure what your talking about

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:16 PM EDT up reply actions

It was just played on Versus, no big deal

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:17 PM EDT up reply actions

sorry wasnt paying attention

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:17 PM EDT reply actions

now we will score

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:19 PM EDT reply actions

cant score passing it all around

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:21 PM EDT reply actions

Moore seems to be consistently out of position on the power play.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:22 PM EDT reply actions

all i know is you cant score unless it goes in the net someone should remind them of that

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:24 PM EDT reply actions

cant keep letting them take the puck right off our sticks

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:28 PM EDT reply actions

This lazy play that the Sabres have started to play is getting really fun to watch.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:31 PM EDT reply actions

go figure a dump in gives a scoring chances something has to a passing is horrible

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:32 PM EDT reply actions

dump it again please

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:34 PM EDT reply actions

had some errands to take care of

looks like i didn’t miss too much – did catch one Lalime save though… he’s back in form?

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 8:36 PM EDT reply actions

would you care to count how many times these two mention a pliers player berfore they say a sabre

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:37 PM EDT reply actions

The Flyers are just that much better right now at backchecking

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

damn if they dont stop letting them take the puck away from them their making look so easy to do

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:39 PM EDT reply actions

Out of town scores

FLA-PITT tied 1-1 with 12:54 left in the 2nd
MON ahead of EDM 1-0 with 13:13 left in the 2nd

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 8:57 PM EDT reply actions

Ouch.

Glad VS was focused on important things like the game at hand.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

VS

has a bad habit of doing that….

Nothing sucks momentum worse than a first/last minute goal. The Sabres dont have the spunk to come back from this

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 8:59 PM EDT reply actions

Non-playoffs here we come. Maybe we can factor into the Tavares sweepstakes somehow.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions

i hate to say it but they really look like they dont want to be in the playoffs

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 9:01 PM EDT reply actions

how can you consistantly pass to the other team and not your temmate and how can you constantly let them take the puck away from you and not even try to get it back that’s what i’m seeing all game

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 9:04 PM EDT reply actions

Aren’t they always. At least we can figure out who we want to root for in the playoffs now.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

I feel you guys…We Avs fans have been looking at that scenario for a few weeks now.

I'm so tired of losing here in WNY

A couple of years ago, the year after the lockout, it was exciting with the Sabres…..but that’s been about it in recent years.

Can T.O. skate?

by ccthemovieman on Mar 10, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

great.

glad i won’t be awake when DO is watching this.

by HO on Mar 10, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Just make sure you put in earplugs or something

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

LOL

I can just hear him yelling at the TV now. It’s not gonna be pretty.

by HO on Mar 10, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

just remember i brought him here but you picked him

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 9:09 PM EDT up reply actions

cant say as i blame you there

Joan

by Joan O. on Mar 10, 2009 9:07 PM EDT up reply actions

not giving up - particularly on the season

(1) just 3+ days ago we were on a two game winning streak
(2) it’s about the schedule…. next three games are home for FLA and ATL, then on the road in OTT

yeah yeah i know, we cant beat OTT. but we’re due.

besides i gotta hold up my image as the optimist.

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

We did this at the trade deadline last season, played well for the first few games and then tanked. And as I write this, could it get any worse.

by Zachary Zielonka on Mar 10, 2009 9:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Seriously!?

4-1
What are we just not even trying!?

by HO on Mar 10, 2009 9:10 PM EDT reply actions

by dfderie on Mar 10, 2009 9:14 PM EDT up reply actions

scored three times in the second period at Pittsburgh against a red-hot Pens team.
Why can’t we do things like that?

by ccthemovieman on Mar 10, 2009 9:27 PM EDT reply actions

Well, that was at least entertaining.
