Daily Links for Monday, Dec. 7
A new week brings a new chance for the Sabres to prove themselves as they face one of the top teams in the East. Head past the jump to debate whether or not we should change the old trophy names and for another hockey holiday gift idea.

Connolly continues to draw blanks on faceoffs | The Buffalo News
The Buffalo Sabres have struggled on faceoffs since Paul Gaustad went down with a knee injury. Now they have another problem in the circle: Is center Tim Connolly injured and unable to take draws or just in such a complete slump with them that the Sabres need to look elsewhere? This is something I've been wondering about for a few games, and the News provides a few answers.
SABRES TO HOLD WINTER CLOTHING DRIVE DURING DECEMBER HOME GAMES | Buffalo Sabres
The Buffalo Sabres announced today they will be holding a Winter Clothing Drive during four homes games this month. If you're planning on attending any of these games, please consider bringing something to donate, even if it's just a pair of gloves or a hat. Every little bit helps!
NHL suspends Carcillo for fight that earned him 19 PIM | TSN
The NHL has suspended Flyers forward Dan Carcillo four games for his role in a fight that earned him 19 penalty minutes and a game misconduct. Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren said on Sunday that he did not agree with the decision (duh.)
Pass or Fail: Renaming the NHL's awards | Puck Daddy
Can you tell me anything about Jack Adams, Art Ross, or Georges Vezina, other than the fact that they all have trophies named after them? Didn't think so. Would you rather see Ovechkin win the Gordie Howe trophy instead? Click the link for a name debate.

Carcillo is a scumbag. He sucker punched Bradley before he could throw his gloves off, AND looks like badass doing it because the Bradley stepped into his punch. Big surprise, as Bradley is basically carried off the ice there is a nice moan of boos. What the hell is up with that?
Seems silly to change the Trophy names to me, it’s gimmicky. It’s a tradition, it’s meant to honor some of the forefathers of the game, and people should be encouraged to learn about them. Everyone knows who Wayne Gretzky is.
agreed on both.
Philly is full of scumbags.
And re-naming the trophys is dumb. If you dont know who these players were… dont be lazy. Go read up on them. Youll learn more about the history of the game that way wanyways.
"I don't know how to explain it but we seem to find eachother on the ice and make things happen... Yeah. Pass, shoot, score... Yeah. Pass.. Shoot.. And score."
Agree
If you rename them now, you have to re-re-name them in 20 years when nobody remembers who Gordie Howe is. I wish they would have kept the old division and conference names too. The “Prince of Wales Conference” just sounds so awesome.
Tonight’s lines are UGLY
Poms-Roy-Hecht
Stafford-Timbo-Vanek
Mac-Kennedy-Kaleta
Mair-Ellis-Paetsch
Grier out to be with his very sick mother, no timetable. And we continue to refuse to call someone up from Portland.

Ugly?
The fourth line I’ll grant you is quite ugly. This could be a game where we don’t roll 4 lines quite so much. The third is kind of ugly in a good way, isn’t it? And if you think the other two are ugly, what qualifies as a “pretty” line for the Sabres?
Paestch has been a healthy scratch as of late. Should we call someone up just to take his place? Maybe they will if they get an idea on how long Grier will be out.

I’m interested to see what this third line brings. It’s kind of a weird combination of players. Luckily Kennedy OWNS Brodeur :)
Well, the Timbo-Vanek combination hasn’t exactly been pretty when they’ve played together this season, and Mac, who has been one of our best scoring forwards, I feel like is sort of wasted on what could be a sick checking line with Kennedy and Kaleta. That 4th line, well, yeah. It’s a more typical 4th line than we’re used to.
I would just much rather call someone up from Portland, play Kaleta with Mair and Ellis on a traditional banger line, Vanek with Mac and Kennedy, and Ennis/Gerbe/Mancari/whoever with Timbo and Stafford.

Fair enough. We’ll see how they play out. Goals will be at a premium tonight.

heading off to the game soon (driving from Rochester)
hopefully we play well, this will be my wife’s first Sabres game (I usually go with my sister, the wife is not very into hockey but I’m doing my best to change that, and the Sabres need to help me out tonight!)
In that case I hope she appreciates goalies.
