Long time Sabres fan now living in Chicago. Watching the team, what do you think the Sabres need to pick up at the trading deadline?
My initial thought was a winger. But the more I think of it, perhaps a good #2 center (some will start the chants for Briere or Drury) would allow Lindy a lot of flexibility when putting together his lines.
The Sabres, when healthy, have as their top six forwards Roy and Connolly at C, Pomminville and Stafford at RW, Vanek and McArthur at LW. That leaves Gaustad, Grier and Kaleta as a third line or as muscle to be sprinkled in as necessary on the top two lines. The 4th line, to the extent it is used is pretty non-descript (Hecht, who isn't even good enough to make the German Olymic team, Ellis, etc.)
A new winger would push one of the wingers from the top two lines down to the third (the way Vanek got dropped to the 3rd line) which would add some punch to it. Gerbe may contribute in this way, if he can make the jump to the big club. A center, on the other hand, would allow Lindy to use Roy as either a C or a winger, as needed, which would put one of the top two line wingers down on the third.
It'll all come down to who is available at what price. All things being equal (they never are) a new C would add the most, it seems to me.
What are your thoughts?
