What would it take... And would you do it?
Simple question really... I just read on TSN that Atlanta and Kovalchuk have hit a "snag" in their contract negotiations. Basically all Im asking is what you guys think the Sabres would have to give up to get him here, obiviously it would be alot... Me personally I wouldnt pull the trigger on a trade unless he was locked up for a few more years... wouldnt want to see a Hossa-to-the-Pens type of senario happen.

It would take a lot
Not sure he would be happy playing more defense, but i would love to get a guy like him. I aslo think we would have to have a deal done before we traded for him. Pommer, Butler or Sekera and a high pick might work for Atlanta. Im sure we would have to move someone with a good sized contract to make room for Kovalchuk’s salary though.

No, we wouldn’t, more than likely.

i agree there… I wouldnt give Myers up. But I wouldnt mind dangling Pominville and Butler/Sekera and maybe a Portland boy. I admit it would be alot and I doubt it would ever happen but his scoring in our lineup would be pretty damn amazing to see.

if it would win a stanley cup for buffalo, i’d trade anyone but miller.

It would depend on if we could sign Kovalchuk. I wouldn’t want to trade the house for a rental player. Besides, they may want Miller as part of a package deal with Pavalec or another of their goaltenders.

Not a player to carry a team
Kovalchuk is a very talented, skilled player, but I’m not sure how well he’d fit in in the much tougher Northeast Division. While his offensive abilities clearly are high, I just don’t see him as a guy who can put a team on his shoulders and carry them through the playoffs. Atlanta has built a relatively solid team around him now, and he’s not dominant. Indeed, when he scores, the Thrashers tend to lose. There are relatively few true “franchise players” in today’s NHL, and I don’t think he’s one of them. I just couldn’t see moving several key pieces of a roster that is doing well so far for a guy who scores points, but doesn’t necessarily win. Salary also would be an issue.
