Game Preview: Buffalo Sabres @ Ottawa Senators

Records, statistics and the standings don't matter, at least not for this match-up. Whether the Ottawa Senators are improving or playing poorly, they seem to have the Buffalo Sabres' number winning every season series in the last four years. Buffalo had a 41-26 shot advantage in the first contest of the season yet fell 5-3 to the Senators showing just how snake bitten they are when it comes to their Division foe.

But the Sabres don't look concerned with the past. Winners of four straight including a hard-fought 4-3 final in Montreal where they've struggled as well, the team believes they can beat anyone, anywhere. That's the mindset Buffalo needs and tonight is their best shot to really take it to the Senators which they undoubtedly would relish.

Five thoughts on each team below.

  • I dug up some numbers to give you an idea of how dominantly Ottawa has handled Buffalo. Since the lock-out, the Senators are 21-6-4 including this year's first clash. Of those 21 victories, 17 have ended by two or more goals and the Sabres have been outscored 126-88 when you count it all up which I did. Ouch.
  • Ryan Miller and Brian Elliott are the starting netminders. Patrick Lalime surrendered five goals in the November contest. If anyone can put an end to Buffalo's slump with Ottawa, it's Miller who continues to lead the league in every major category for goaltenders with the exception of wins where he is one shy of the lead held by Martin Brodeur and Jonathan Quick
  • Clarke MacArthur banged home the game-winner Monday in Montreal via a five-on-three powerplay. The fourth-year winger passed Thomas Vanek in goals with his tenth by doing so. He put in 17 last season and looks to set a new career-high in the mid-20s.
  • Out with a torn MCL, Jason Spezza will be on the shelf as long as eight weeks possibly. It's a big break for Buffalo because the former Windsor Spitfire has 47 points in 37 career games with the Sabres. Also out of action for Ottawa is Chris Neil and Shean Donovan.
  • Three goals in two games including Buffalo's only two shorthanded markers have Patrick Kaleta receiving attention everywhere. Tied for sixth in team scoring with this outburst, the energetic checker has done it in style during and after the goal. A shorthanded goal would surely suck the life out of the Senators.
  • Spezza may be out but Ottawa still has three major threats up front. Daniel Alfredsson is always a thorn in our side, Mike Fisher is having a superb year and Milan Michalek already has 15 goals. And Alex Kovalev, in terms of work-rate, will be there maybe.
  • Buffalo's powerplay percentage is down to 21st and their penalty-kill has dropped to eighth which is the result of four of the last five goals they've conceded coming on the man-advantage. New York and Montreal both made two count. Ottawa is 12th on the penalty-kill and 21st when they are a man up so they aren't separated by Buffalo very much.
  • Against their Division, the Sabres are 4-2-2 as are the Senators strangely enough. Buffalo has won eight of ten and the Senators have lost six of ten.
  • Elliott is 5-0 lifetime versus Buffalo which shouldn't come as a surprise with their inabilities to close out the Senators. On the flip side, Miller is 8-11 against Ottawa but this will be his first crack at shutting them down this season.
  • A 15-2-2 record after scoring first is again irrelevant for Buffalo because Ottawa is one of the two squads who have won after allowing the opening goal to the Sabres. Boy have they ever had their way with Lindy Ruff's troops.

This is a must-win situation purely because Buffalo must prove it to the coaches, staff, fans and themselves that they have the ability to defeat Ottawa. With Spezza, Neil and Donovan out and a back-up goaltender standing in their way, this is their most timely opportunity. It's now or never.

A few other notes:

Nick Foligno (second line winger) also out for tonight. Going into that empty spot on forward is Chris Campoli, a defenceman who hasn’t played up front since he was 5 or 6 years old.

I have a terrible feeling about this game.

Yeah, if it weren’t for Ottawa’s usual dominance of us I’d feel really good about this one.
That’s quite a few injuries there. Seems like Ottawa is finally getting some secondary scoring though. It’s more of a test for Ottawa than Buffalo.

I have two things to say...

1) When is Buffalo going to change their terrible logo? I’m not kidding. It was often reported that the reason they chose the slug is because they planned on changing it again in 5 – 10 years. What’s the word on this?

2) Who is in charge of this message board/site? With all honesty there is no reason why this place is a ghost town. It need to be your number one priority to get people over here. The quality of this site makes its lack of population embaressing.

Na D.O. – you do a good job for sure.

better than a lot of sbnation editors out there for sure.

all it takes is time – you’re doing good by us and we apprecaite it

for the record (not the CoD Modern Warfare achievement for beating it on elite) – but I would post fanposts more frequently but I just don’t know enough about hockey. but i could start some sort of “hey – this is what i think” and then get some good feedback from people that actually know what the hell they are talking about.

and the senators smell like old socks

Thanks J2

All we can do is write about our opinion and give as much information as possible. I try to alert as many people as possible to the site and they either like it or they don’t. Our traffic is up considerably but we don’t compare to Buffalo Rumblings and I don’t think we need to. Brian has built a really good thing over there, I would be happy to be half as big as that site.

true

We would be more negative towards the team if they were in last lace and playing bad… But we’re a first place team, why be that negative? Sure we’re not a perfect team so there are some thing to complain about but overall its a pretty solid team. And the sn: TrentEdwardsHoF2018 is slightly embarrassing, so just kind of lay off knockin DO… its hockey not football. As much as all of us love hockey more people love football more. Thats just the way things are…

I don't think he was knocking me or the site

He actually complimented us by saying it was a good blog and more people should be here. I agree with him in that respect but too many people have a negative outlook regarding the Sabres. Those people don’t want to hear the positive regarding the organization. They want to believe that Darcy Regier and Larry Quinn have ruined the team and they will never win with them in charge.

And I love how people say that they ruined this team, when year in and year out since NHL 2.0 we’ve been at least competitive and clearly are a good team this year. Some people just see what they want… My 90 year old grandpa comes to mind. Maybe I was just yelling at him there instead of the other poster haha.

lol – my friends father doesn’t like the sabres becuase of jeanerette (sp?) – which does 2 things for me.

a) clearly shows that people can be pretty petty

and

b) how the f*** can you not like rick jeanerette? i LOVE listening to him call hockey games – especially over those stupid vs commentators.
he actually calls the game

plus – how can you not love this?

But they’re the same ones that believe that the Bills will win the Super Bowl every year and that a terrible string of injuries is the excuse when things end up bad…..again.

It’s funny how some people can be so positive to the Bills and so negative to the Sabres.

Well said David. You do a great job and as you know Rome was never built overnight. I see the blog growing slowly and with the great writing and people here so far, I think it’ll do well. Or at least, it’ll be a smaller, tight-knight community that follows the team and has some fantastic discussion about hockey. And I too like Buffalo Rumblings, but there are times where if you’re not “one of the regulars” around there, you get lost in the shuffle or occasionally have every comment you make over analyzed. There’s something to be said for a smaller, more tight-knit group.

by sabre74kkn on Dec 16, 2009 5:40 PM EST up reply actions

By the way, I’d like to add that even though this is a small community (that I have no problem with), I feel that it’s a GOOD community. Free of the trolls, free of the bickering, and by and large lives up to what the tagline says: Buffalo Sabres blog for intelligent fans.

I’d rather have 30 intelligent fans hanging out here than 300 profane, nonsensical idiots.

You misspelled embarrassing.

Now that’s embarrassing.

I find men (you are a man right? I probably should include women in it anyways.) discussing sports on a website populated mainly by men, who end comments in an emoticon to be incredibly embarrassing. I’m not singling you out but goddammit, we’re adults! This isn’t some Twilight fansite. :) :P 8==> ~~ (o.O)

Regarding sites being a ghost town… it takes a long time for a site that requires registration to build up a large contingent of commenters. Most people are simply too lazy to sign up as a commenter at a website. I don’t have many registered accounts at other hockey sites outside of the SBNation network.

Silver Seven also features a lack of population, but it’s really hard to figure out how to combat that.

Japers rink

is probably the most popular hockey blog on sbnation. They’ve got a good squad in the Capitals to write about and they get like hundreds of comments for each post.

PPP impressives me.

There was a simple post after their last win that had a few hundred comments. Of course, it is the Laffs so celebrations are few and far between.

Japers was also well established before moving to SBN.

aaawww thats a shame... no Neil tonight. haha.

Big Game tonight for the Sabres. The Sens have our number and Miller has never really played a “Miller” game against them. Tonight would be a great night for that to start.

I find Trent’s comments and judgment to be very useful. Whatever he says; it’s a safe bet to disagree with it.

Remember the 2006 playoffs when we took Ottawa out in five games? Miller was the difference in that series but as far as the regular season goes, he’s been troubled by them just like the rest of the guys.

by Rafal Ladysz on Dec 16, 2009 5:09 PM EST reply actions

yeah that was a different story.

I guess im just talking since then and more importantly in the regular season. They just seem to have our number. Yeah he stood on his head that series. “Spezza walking in MIIIIIIIIIIIIILLLLLEEEEEEEEEER stuffs him cold!!!!”

What 2007 playoffs?

:)

by Afino on Dec 16, 2009 6:05 PM EST up reply actions

That was a tough pill to swallow in 2007

Alfredsson got the overtime winner in game five and Buffalo was expected to win the Cup with their depth. Then Ottawa got embarrassed by Anaheim though.

by Rafal Ladysz on Dec 16, 2009 6:19 PM EST up reply actions

Nice post though I don’t agree that this is a must win. The Swords remain in first in the NE regardless of its outcome and have won 4 in a row. Blowing one here won’t kill us as long as it doesn’t turn into a streak.

Don’t get me wrong, I would love to see a win here and I think it would be a boost (hopefully not too big) for the team to finally beat the Sens again but if we lose? No biggy… I know they are tied with Boston but I don’t think they have the firepower or goalie to keep up for the rest of the season.

Maybe I’m just helping myself not feel bad when they most probably lose again… five wins in a row isn’t easy. The 5th win against the Sens? :(

by clownfat on Dec 16, 2009 5:12 PM EST reply actions

Jeanerette

Considering our record against the Sens, I wonder if a Sabres win will prompt a “now do you believe…these guys are good, SCARY good!!”

by destinsabresfan on Dec 16, 2009 5:13 PM EST reply actions

clownfat

it’s more a win for themselves than for the points and blowing a game against a division opponent isn’t the way to go. With the injuries to Ottawa, I call it a must-win just for the sake of peace of mind for us and the team because if they can’t get it done under these circumstances, Ottawa will know they can run them down anytime.

by Rafal Ladysz on Dec 16, 2009 5:22 PM EST reply actions

I’d like to see us match their physical play … ever since Clouston took charge, they seem to be even more aggressive against us, always in more of an attack mode. We tend to play passive against them for whatever reason.

by sabre74kkn on Dec 16, 2009 5:41 PM EST reply actions

We react to how they play to where most other teams we try to dictate the flow of the game. Or at least thats they way Lindy would like it… to dictate the play.
