Mark Jeanneret
So i'm suppose to be studying in the library, but as a the typical die hard sabres fan, im alwasy looking stuff up about the sabres when im at the computer. i was talking to my this past week and we started talking about the portland pirates. he was watching a game and absolutely fell in love with rick jeanneret's son Mark, who, this past summer became the play by play announcer for the portland pirates. i couldnt find anything on youtube of him as far the portland pirates are concerned, but i heard some of mark's stuff when he was the announcer for the erie otters
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9lZvvNUgiME
video of mark.
anyways, just curious if anyone has heard this guy, and what people think of him possibly filling in for rick when he decides to hang up the mic. i think this would be a great progression as far as sabres entertainment is concerned.

I'm not a fan
He sounds like he’s trying to be his dad. Be your own man, don’t try to emulate that voice. It cannot be duplicated and should not be tried. I would love him to continue the legacy here, but be your own man.

He sounds like he’s trying to be his dad
From the clips I’ve heard, I agree with you here. Maybe that’s just the way he is though. When Jeannert was in his prime, he could call a game better on the radio than what you could watch with your own eyes on TV. Maybe his son just needs some more time. It’s not an easy thing to do. It’s not the voice Mark needs to mimic; it’s the absolute Hall Of Fame play-by-play announcing that he should aspire to..

I haven't heard him in Portland...
…but I heard him quite often when he was the play-by-play man in Erie. Mark simply lacks both the skill and the passion to be a credible play-by-play man in the NHL. It’s not that he’s not his dad…he’s just not that good a play caller.
As I posted several months ago, I’d rather see the Sabres go for an established voice like Pete Weber, Randy Moller or Curt Kielback. Kielback is even available and it is downright criminal that he doesn’t have an NHL job right now.

I watched him calling a Portland game the other night and I think its hard for him to not sound like his dad, genes and all. I wasn’t overly impressed by his playcalling but it wouldn’t surprise me if he comes to Buffalo.

I’d take Pete Weber. He even made Buffalo Bison games sound good…

I don't know if he's willing to leave Nashville
He’s pretty well established there and he and Terry Crisp work exceptionally well together. On the other hand, I do know that he applied for the Expos play-by-play job when they first moved to Washington.

If the Sabres offered Weber a position, I would imagine that he would take it in a heartbeat.

Re: imitating his dad
I don’t blame him for that – I think that to a certain extent, all males emulate the way our fathers speak. Not on purpose, but I often find myself saying something and then thinking “That sounds like something my dad would say.” Vocal inflections, jokes, ways of telling stories, etc. I agree that he can’t just try to be a carbon copy of his dad, but there will always be a bit of RJ in there, even if he’s not necessarily trying.

You are so right on this. I don’t know if it’s possible for me to agree more. While I think I sound a thousand times different than my father, any time I answer the phone at their home, people mistake me for him. And everyone (friends, family) say we sound exactly alike.

Happens to me, too
Friends call here looking for me and sometimes end up talking to my 20yo son for about 2 minutes before they realize he’s not me.

The real question is:
Would you prefer Mark or Kevin Sylvester?
(for those of you who remember his play-by-play during RJ’s absence)
And this is a hypothetical question, as in if you had to pick one or the other.

how about...
Rick lives and calls sabres game forever. I dont want to even think about someone else’s voice when im listening to a game.

Yeah, but it happens, and it sucks. I remember those horrible years after Ted Darling stopped doing the TV games. I give John Gurtler credit for trying to fill the shoes of a legend, but it was rough. Best move the Sabres ever made off ice was going with a tv and radio broadcast of Jeanneret.
On a side note, Ted Darling’s daughter Wendy kissed me on the cheek at summer camp in 1982(?) for finishing second in goal scoring for the street hockey tourney. I hated the kid who won first place…and still do.

Gurtler is still brutal to listen to as play by play man.

I agree with this.

While I think there are better men out there for such a legendary job (and let’s not kid ourselves, PxP man in Buffalo is a legendary job with only surefire HOF’ers really doing it), Mark Jeanneret is almost assuredly the next guy. With his move to Portland, it even seems like they’re trying to make him a part of the organization so he can get used to the young guys….many of while will be playing in Buffalo when he finally takes over for his dad.
I’m not saying there aren’t better announcers, but NOBODY is ever going to be RJ. So it makes sense (in a very cool way, I’ll add) to keep it in the family by giving Mark the job. I know he’s not his dad and never will be, so it won’t bother me that he isn’t as good.
PLEASE GOD NOT PETE WEBER. The man managed is the most boring announcer I have literally ever heard. Comparing him to RJ is like comparing a Ferrari to your great-grandmother’s Model T.

Mark is trying way too hard to be his dad, and he’s NOT pulling it off at all. He’s coming off as annoying to me in those videos, I think he’d work better with a slightly lower-key delivery.
If they’re replacing RJ I’d enjoy seeing Randy Moller, he’s a fantastic Play-by-play guy and his stuff with Florida is hilarious.

Bills fan? In Colorado? It's more likely than you think.

I hate Moller
talk about trying too hard…Moller is the epitome of trying to hard.
I was not a fan of Mark when he was in Erie but it seems he might have received some good advice. I have listened to him a couple of times in Portland and he seems to have improved greatly.
