SPG Game
I quickly put up a post before the first game that explained the SPG Game. Unfortunately I did not do a very good job of explaining it. I will try to do a better job of explaining the game and the objective in this post. As always , if there are any questions send me an e-mail or ask in the comments.
What is the SPG Game?
"SPG" is an acronym for "Shot", "Penalty" and "Goal". The object of the game is to predict which Buffalo Sabres player will have the first shot, penalty and goal for each period.
How Does it Work?
You receive one point for every correct prediction you make. This gives you a potential for nine points in a regulation game, 12 points in an overtime game and 14 points in a shootout.
How Do I Sign Up?
The SPG Game is free to play with a special thanks to Gary Perez for building the platform that drives these statistics. You can sign up by visiting this page and creating account. After creating account you will have to visit the game page to make your selections.
Prizes?
There will be prizes available for the winner of each month as well as a grand prize winner at the conclusion of the regular season. The winner of the grand prize at the end of the season will win a Buffalo Sabres jersey. We will start out small by giving away a Buffalo Sabres poster to the winner of the October SPG Game.
Congrats to zaniac75 on winning the October prize of a Buffalo Sabres poster. I will be sending that out shortly.

Gotta put shots on net
2 great chances so far where wee completely missed the net. Tuuta Rask is gonna look like Jaques Plante if he only has to make 15 saves all game. Totally unacceptable play so far.

In the post-lockout era
offense means more in the NHL than it ever did in the past……and our offense is not exactly a powerhouse. This team ain’t going anywhere until we get people who can put the puck in the net or have a change in coaching philosophy.

Really, the offense is getting their chances in this game, they just aren’t finding the back of the net. Enroth hasn’t played terribly, the first goal was probably the worst bounce I have seen in my history of watching hockey. This team just doesn’t look like they really care all that much about this game.

I’m not willing to go that far yet. You might be right but I think the changes the team made were legit. This team is better than they were a year ago.

2 games does not a season make
They weren’t gonna go all year without losing 2 in a row. Let’s give it the month of November before we bury this team.

That being said
This effort tonight is pathetic. 11 shots on goal so far. The most telling thing for me is how bored RJ sounds calling the game. He couldn’t even get excited for the Roy goal. That’s when you know we’re flat.
by Andy Boron on Nov 7, 2009 8:25 PM EST reply actions 0 recs
Better (and even tougher) for sure…
But, come on, a split with the Islanders… Then, although we’re tougher, we can’t play with the TOUGH Flyers… Now, 3 goals against a team that’s offensively dysfunctional… (I’m not a Regier basher… I like what he’s done with what’s he’s got, but last year around this time, they stopped playing hard … and now they’re doing it again). It’s not the losing… it’s the lack of effort. Hopefully, I wrong…

Is RJ ill?
Sometime just before duh Broonz second goal, his speech started slowing down, some of the specific cadences he typically uses have become absent and he has lost all his animation. This is not typical of him, even when the Sabres are playing poorly.
I am not a doctor, but it sounds a lot like RJ is having a stroke.

It didn’t work. We suck. We’ve lost 3 of 4 and it should be “lost 4 of 5” because we barely beat Toronto. We can’t compete with anyone in the league, on any given night, and we haven’t even faced any cup contenders yet. Come to the ledge and sing along with me:

Who are you? And how old are you?
Some of your comments might deserve consideration for discussion. The logic of the Paille trade may be rehashed for years. All of that is dependant upon his play, and the real reasons for his departure will probably never be known. And, calling the Sabres inconsistent might be fair. But aside from the NHL’s absolute elite, tell me which teams are consistent?
The rest of your comments? Garbage. Saying team the doesn’t care about the fans is ridiculous. The have practically spent to the cap every year since the caps inception. They could make more money by not paying guys (like PHO, NYI, NASH, and DAL), but they don’t. They buck up, even if it might not be for the right players.
Saying they can’t compete with anyone in the league is even dumber. It actually might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this site.
How did they dismantle a cup contender? Drury didn’t want to play here, so he left. He hasn’t exactly lit it up in New York since he signed there. Philly would love to get rid of Briere and that contract. Chicago would love to do the same with Soup. In hindsight now, Darcy made good moves on those three. None of them have justified the huge contracts they have.
Oh, your “Nah na” comments….please…grow up. I certainly don’t speak for anyone but myself here, but that kind of junk is just bush league in my opinion. Go somewhere else with stuff like that. Really. Please.

Didn't think I would come back?
“The have practically spent to the cap every year since the caps inception.”
Give me a few minutes to stop rolling on the floor in laughter! Sure, the Sabres spent to the cap this year, but last year they were 6 MILLION UNDER THE SALARY CAP, the year before that they were nearly 5.5 MILLION UNDER THE SALARY CAP. Every year since the caps inception? Please… educate yourself.
“How did they dismantle a cup contender?”
I really have to latitude a completion for that one? WOW, where have you been the last 2 seasons? From two Conference Finals and a President’s trophy, to two (maybe three) years of no playoffs ring a bell?
“Saying they can’t compete with anyone in the league is even dumber. It actually might be the dumbest thing I’ve ever read on this site.”
Oh boy, we beat a struggling Red Wings team weeks ago and suddenly you think we can compete with the best of them? Now that’s dumb. Let me put this in simple terms:
________
4-1 loss to the weak Thrashers, AGAIN. They haven’t learned ANYTHING from last year’s experience with the Thrashers SEASON SWEEPING US.
________
5-0 loss to the goddamn pathetic Isles, AGAIN. Arguing it was an off night would’ve worked, but sadly it’s not the case considering the Sabres last 5 or 6 games. Again, not learning from last year’s losses to the weak Isles and letting easy points slip away.
________
3-2 barely beat the LEAGUE-WORST Leafs (at the time). Are you kidding me? I’m not even going to spell this one out for you.
________
5-2 loss to the flu and injury decimated Flyers, AGAIN. SEASON SWEPT last year – still haven’t learned. Gotta love how they are starting to let teams come into our house and make us their you-know-whats.
________
4-2 loss to the scary-bad offensively pathetic Bruins. Hardy har har. First game I refused to even watch all year, and I gotta say it was the right choice. We lost to the 7-7-2 Bruins? Please, lets not even debate this one.
As backed up by the above games, like I said, they can’t compete.

Re: Didn't think I would come back?
I really wish you wouldn’t have. But since you did, I’ll play along. This’ll be so easy.
You make a mention of how much they were under the cap the last few seasons. Correct me if I’m wrong, but wasn’t every team under the cap since it’s inception? I kind of thought that was the whole premise of a salary cap. Now, I don’t have the exact numbers, but I am willing to bet they are at least in the top third in spending to the cap over the last four or five years. Again, they may not have spent money well, but they have spent money.
I have to laugh at this:
"I really have to latitude a completion for that one?"
What the hell does that mean?
You say Regier dismantled a Cup contender. How? You just say it, but you don’t say how they allegedly did so. Are you just angry because you and your "friend" who had matching "61" jerseys now look silly? What would you have done two years ago if you were the GM? Please…enlighten us.
Again, you said they can’t compete with anyone. If you really feel that is the case, and you think they are the worst team in the league, I would like to propose a proposition to you. Would you like to put your money where your mouth is? If you’re so sure they are absolutely awful, why not make a few bucks? Saying they "can’t compete with anyone" means you think they’re the worst team in the league, and will place as such. I’ll give you a thousand to one odds for a hundred bucks on that. Want to take a chance big mouth?
You list five games as proof that they are a bad team? What about the games that, you know, they won? I know it’s early in the season, but it’s easy to see that they are a better team this year than they were the past two years, Whether or not they continue like so is anyone’s guess.
For your next post, do yourself a favor, and do a little thinking. Like I said before, I speak for no one here in SB Nation. But I do think those of us that visit this and other related sites expect and appreciate words that have some brain work behind them; not just emotion geared at striking a nerve.

Yawn.
Hey krytime, check your ego. You don’t speak for me.
You claimed in your argument with ted that the Sabres have always spent to the cap. You were wrong, deal with it. You don’t have exact numbers? What a surprise.
You also seem to be in a terrible amount of denial over the bad moves that were made by management over the past few seasons. How else do you explain going from Cup contention to missing the playoffs? Nevermind, I don’t even want to hear your rehashed excuses.
by Ron A on Nov 9, 2009 3:13 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Did you miss the part where I said this:
I speak for no one here in SB Nation
The Sabres have spent money. There is no argument about that.
I’m not in denial over anything. I think they ave made a lot of bad moves, and I’ve been very critical of them for that. The contracts that they handed out to Kotalik, Max, Timmy, Tallinder and many others were way out of whack. In addition, it took them way to long to figure out that the game was changed from the one they succeeded at right after the lockout.
If you oblige, I’d love to hear your reasons why they didn’t make the playoffs the last two seasons.
And I certainly don’t have an ego; trust me – my humor is very self-deprecating. I only got after tedrecommends for what I perceived as screaming for the sake of screaming. I like this site a lot, and I really appreciate the words of those who put some thought into their intelligent posts. I didn’t see any of that from him.
by krytime on Nov 9, 2009 4:42 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Re: You don’t have exact numbers? What a surprise.
Ok. I went and got the numbers from here:
I was a little surprised; I thought they were a little higher. But they still weren’t near the bottom of the league. Just eyeballing the last four years tells me they’re in the middle of the pack when it comes to payroll. In a market this size, I’m happy with them spending as much money as they are.
By the way – what were you referring to by mentioning my “rehashed excuses?” I don’t remember seeing you on this site before. What were/are you referring to?
by krytime on Nov 9, 2009 6:06 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
We’re not talking about where they stand compared to the rest of the league. We’re talking about how you claimed they spent right up to the cap, every year. You were wrong with that estimate. Deal with it.
I don’t want to hear your rehashed excuses about how happy you are they are spending what they are, how we are in the middle of the pack, blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah. Let’s stay on track. Simple terms, jimbo: You said they spent to the cap, every year. They did not spend to the cap, every year. You were wrong, period. Deal with it.
by Ron A on Nov 10, 2009 10:34 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
I thought I already did “deal with it,” as you say. I thought I acknowledged that they were further down the payroll ladder than I thought. If that wasn’t enough for you, then I don’t know what else is. No, they did not spend to the cap every year since it’s inception. I was wrong wording my thoughts like so. But again, I will defend the fact that no one can say they have been on the cheap side of the ledger.
Now, I’d appreciate if you dealt with something. What are you talking about when referring to my “rehashed excuses?” I imagine you won’t reply now. You just wanted to prove some kind of point, semantically speaking with regard to the cap comments I made. Hooray for Ron A.
I’m done with this post. It’s old news already. If you want to engage in an intelligent discussion regarding any and all Sabre news, please start up a new post via the fanpost section.
by krytime on Nov 11, 2009 2:21 AM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Rehashed excuses include mentioning how happy you are with their spending, how they are in the middle of the pack, etc etc etc. I never said they were YOUR original excuses, but they are rehashed excuses we’ve all heard from any of the painfully obvious blind-faithers in our fan base.
I’m glad to see you are coming to terms with the correction. This conversation is over.
by Ron A on Nov 11, 2009 6:41 PM EST up reply actions 0 recs
Great argument guys but
let’s just ease up on the personal insults. There is room for people who are happy with the team and those that are not too happy in this community. All I ask is that you back up your opinions. Just saying the “Sabres suck” is not backing up your argument. If you say “Sabres suck because Darcy Regier is a terrible GM” I would disagree with you but be willing to discuss it further.
Oh by the way…the Sabres are pretty close to the cap this season and the final year of Drury and Briere, they were dangerously close to the cap. They actually sent Stafford down on off days because they didn’t want his salary to count against the cap.
