SPG Game

I quickly put up a post before the first game that explained the SPG Game.  Unfortunately I did not do a very good job of explaining it.  I will try to do a better job of explaining the game and the objective in this post.  As always , if there are any questions send me an e-mail or ask in the comments.

What is the SPG Game?

"SPG" is an acronym for "Shot", "Penalty" and "Goal".  The object of the game is to predict which Buffalo Sabres player will have the first shot, penalty and goal for each period.

How Does it Work?

You receive one point for every correct prediction you make.  This gives you a potential for nine points in a regulation game, 12 points in an overtime game and 14 points in a shootout.

How Do I Sign Up?

The SPG Game is free to play with a special thanks to Gary Perez for building the platform that drives these statistics.  You can sign up by visiting this page and creating account.  After creating account you will have to visit the game page to make your selections.

Prizes?

There will be prizes available for the winner of each month as well as a grand prize winner at the conclusion of the regular season.  The winner of the grand prize at the end of the season will win a Buffalo Sabres jersey.  We will start out small by giving away a Buffalo Sabres poster to the winner of the October SPG Game.

Congrats to zaniac75 on winning the October prize of a Buffalo Sabres poster.  I will be sending that out shortly.

Flyers top pp in the league

looked rather tame just there though.

by Kooz on Nov 6, 2009 7:43 PM EST reply actions

That’ll be a key match up for us tonight

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 7:44 PM EST up reply actions

Buffalo PP

Flyers have the #4 ranked PK in the league – reminds me of us 3 years ago.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 7:46 PM EST reply actions

Pominville

Can’t give the puck up like that. Awful awful play. Miller bails him out as per usual.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 7:48 PM EST reply actions

Other teams are catching on to that play. They do it a lot.

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

I actually liked our PP

right there. No goal, but it wasn’t like we looked lost.

by Kooz on Nov 6, 2009 7:48 PM EST reply actions

Agreed

Great first minute, not so great second minute highlighted by Pommer’s gaffe.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 7:50 PM EST up reply actions

Sabes look good in Philly zone. Lots of pressure. Sekera looks good.

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 7:48 PM EST reply actions

Miller stops breakaway by Richards. Love it. Bad D though.

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 8:00 PM EST reply actions

I hate to be so repetitive, but Miller looks good!

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 8:02 PM EST reply actions

oh man

Vanek is so sneaaaky

by Kooz on Nov 6, 2009 8:05 PM EST reply actions

Best deflection man in the league

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:07 PM EST up reply actions

Can’t blame Miller. That was a heck of a deflection.

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 8:11 PM EST reply actions

True. Nothing he could do there.

End of 1

Teams playing alright – they’re winning SOG but we’re winning faceoffs. Gotta get on the board sooner rather than later.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:14 PM EST reply actions

this is one of those games where

if you’re on the road, you’d kind of feel okay with that period despite being down 1-0. Since it’s a home game, despite the awkward white jerseys, you have to feel kind of bummed with that period.

by Kooz on Nov 6, 2009 8:23 PM EST reply actions

Especially when it’s to the Filthy Flyers.

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:26 PM EST up reply actions

Off Rivet, but it still stands.

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:30 PM EST up reply actions

looking a little rattled

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 8:31 PM EST reply actions

2 lucky goals for them

Deflection was nice, but still. How bout some bounces for us?!

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:32 PM EST reply actions

This team still shows it’s youth. Everyone is all of a sudden trying to do too much.

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 8:34 PM EST reply actions

Relax boys. One goal at a time.

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 8:35 PM EST reply actions

Nice, take out Richards’ knee.

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:35 PM EST reply actions

Nevermind – it wasn’t Richards.

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

Nice use of the boards

More of home-ice advantage for us with these new boards.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:39 PM EST up reply actions

Connolly is playing feisty. I like it.

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 8:40 PM EST reply actions

There’s gonna be a fight soon.

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:41 PM EST reply actions

Kaleta comes out of the box

and goes right after Pronger. Love it.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:42 PM EST reply actions

I love this commercial – they make it obvious it’s the Sabres beating the Flyers.

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:42 PM EST reply actions

Game has gotten physical

This is starting to feel like the Sabres-Flyers match ups we know and love.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:46 PM EST reply actions

Just a thought

I hate Ray Emery. Even if he isn’t a Senator…

by actioncuse on Nov 6, 2009 8:46 PM EST reply actions

Makes it easy when he goes to the Orange and Black too.

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:48 PM EST up reply actions

AND YOU’RE GONNA CALL THAT ON US?? C’mon refs!!

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:49 PM EST reply actions

Watching the Flyers feed on Gamecenter

They conveniently decided not to show the replay on that weak call. First non-replay-to-commercial all night.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:50 PM EST up reply actions

Yeah, not surprising.

by Afino on Nov 6, 2009 8:52 PM EST up reply actions

That’s a commercial I like. Blue Light.

by KTyczka on Nov 6, 2009 8:50 PM EST reply actions

I do miss watching the Buffalo commercials. Gamecenter doesn’t show any commercials at all when using the away feed…

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:51 PM EST up reply actions

hey

Blue Light hotties. How did that commercial make it in New York?

by actioncuse on Nov 6, 2009 8:51 PM EST reply actions

Haha

That was fantastic. Coast to coast!

Philly's "Great Check of the Game"

Was the one where Rivet got pasted…but then they cut the highlight off before Rivet stood up and leveled the guy who tagged him.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 8:58 PM EST reply actions

ugly

they gotta start attacking Emery…

by actioncuse on Nov 6, 2009 8:59 PM EST reply actions

well

It’s gonna take a 3rd period comeback. We’ve seen the Sabres control the game from the 1st many times so far. I’m not sure they can comeback yet. It will be a big step to do it against a legit team. I’ve got faith…

by actioncuse on Nov 6, 2009 9:08 PM EST reply actions

End of 2

Got outshot 14-8. Bad period for Buffalo – looked too much like the team from last year, playing back on their heels as soon as the going got tough. All 3 Flyers goals are weird bounces/deflections. We need to score early in the third to get the momentum back and the crowd back into the game.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 9:08 PM EST reply actions

Remember in '05

We’d be down by 2 goals in the third, come back to tie it, and win it in overtime. Seemed like that happened 10 times that year. I remember thinking that we were never ever out of a game – would love to see that feeling come back!

Harry and Rob talking with the Philly announcers

Harry could not have talked about Myers with less emotion. Philly’s announcer has a great ’stache. For some reason, all their mics have neon green wires. Somehow this is worse than watching Sylvester.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 9:14 PM EST reply actions

the city didn't burn down...?

I guess the Philly fans have lost their edge…especially after a WS loss.

by actioncuse on Nov 6, 2009 9:18 PM EST up reply actions

Game. See you tomorrow.

GG

Tough when 4 bounces don’t go your way.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 9:28 PM EST up reply actions

Philly

is making its own luck for the most part. It’s working pretty hard on the forecheck.

Another deflection

after a bad turnover in our own zone. That one’s tough for Miller all the way around.

by furrer4heisman on Nov 6, 2009 9:28 PM EST reply actions

I agree

At the same time, the offense doesn’t have it today. We are on a 2 week long winning streaks…streak, so we are expecting a lot. I guess now we are having out horrible game. It will happen, and get ready for the exciting “game we shouldn’t win!”, win. This team will make the playoffs, and so far, they have shown the seeding doesn’t even matter. Don’t worry in November.

by actioncuse on Nov 6, 2009 9:34 PM EST up reply actions

This team we're playing

is pretty good, too. Important one tomorrow on the road against a division opponent. Bruins have a lot of guys out so hopefully we’ll take that one.

Philly is really agressive

on the penalty kill. And we finally took advantage of it on that goal. I like that we’re still playing really hard.

Myers PP Goal

4-2. Finally a bounce goes our way.

by Andy Boron on Nov 6, 2009 9:41 PM EST reply actions

at about 5:30 left

we missed some great chances…

by actioncuse on Nov 6, 2009 9:48 PM EST reply actions

way too many unforced errors this game. This is how I would expect them to play on the 2nd game of a back-to-back, not the first. We really need to get the next game from philly to get that monkey off our back.

by JSCoope on Nov 6, 2009 9:57 PM EST reply actions

I predicted this at the start of the season...

The Sabres were a bad team last year, added no one significant, and simply had a lucky 7 game stretch at the start of the season. Their slide off the top of power rankings lists will be immediate.

This team will finish between 9th and 7th place at the end of the season. We simply dont have the talent.

by TrentEdwardsHoF2018 on Nov 6, 2009 10:13 PM EST reply actions

Behave yourself. It’s one game. Relax, nostradamus. They’ll pull through. Every team is allowed a crap game now and again.

What bothered me...

…was that Ruff knows how to beat Emery: you get him moving side to side. When you get Emery to stand up, he’s exceptionally hard to beat. You get him thinking about where the pass is going to go and he collapses. For most of the game the Sabres were taking good shots at Emery but they were the types of shots that he handles well…straight on. I wanted to strangle C-Mac through much of the game for simply staying immobile near the front of the net and trying to blast one past Emery. That simply doesn’t work against him. Emery almost always buys the deke and no one save Roy even tried to do it to him.
