SPG Game

I quickly put up a post before the first game that explained the SPG Game.  Unfortunately I did not do a very good job of explaining it.  I will try to do a better job of explaining the game and the objective in this post.  As always , if there are any questions send me an e-mail or ask in the comments.

What is the SPG Game?

"SPG" is an acronym for "Shot", "Penalty" and "Goal".  The object of the game is to predict which Buffalo Sabres player will have the first shot, penalty and goal for each period.

How Does it Work?

You receive one point for every correct prediction you make.  This gives you a potential for nine points in a regulation game, 12 points in an overtime game and 14 points in a shootout.

How Do I Sign Up?

The SPG Game is free to play with a special thanks to Gary Perez for building the platform that drives these statistics.  You can sign up by visiting this page and creating account.  After creating account you will have to visit the game page to make your selections.

Prizes?

There will be prizes available for the winner of each month as well as a grand prize winner at the conclusion of the regular season.  The winner of the grand prize at the end of the season will win a Buffalo Sabres jersey.  We will start out small by giving away a Buffalo Sabres poster to the winner of the October SPG Game.

Congrats to zaniac75 on winning the October prize of a Buffalo Sabres poster.  I will be sending that out shortly.

Mobile Site

Remember that you can visit http://mobile.diebytheblade.com to visit the mobile site and you can comment from wherever you watch the game.  Hope to see you here.

Have any of you guys seen the hit on the Kitchener player last night?(or maybe it was Monday) Holy cow, he’s lucky to be alive.

No, you got a link? I just watched the Ladd lumber that was laid on D’Agostini. Ladd left the ice. Seriously, these head shots need to be addressed before someone gets killed. Necks could be broken.

That was a good hit.

by krytime on Nov 4, 2009 7:10 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah...it was last Friday

I haven’t talked much about it because I thought it was a clean hit. The player that got hit, turned his back at the last second. The player that delivered the hit never left his feet, did not deliver an elbow and clearly had no time to stop after Fanelli turned his back.

We have so much talk about hits from behind and such and I maintain the argument that the player that is getting hit, too often turns their back. This is a classic case of that. I’ve often said that it is going to take a player getting seriously injured or worse yet, killed before this type of thing will stop. The problem is the wrong player is being blamed for this hit. Why is there not a public outcry towards players turning their back on a hit? Instead they suspend a player for the rest of the season because of a hard check.

It was definitely brutal. The hit was the same type of hit we see all the time but this time the player spun himself towards the boards when the hit was being delivered.

note to Marty Biron:
Get ready to back up Miller after DiPietro comes back if we’re smart and the Isles want to free up money.

I would love Marty behind Miller for our playoff push. The D would play strong in front of him.

this game might come down to Ryan Miller. The Islanders are getting a lot of opportunities in the third.

Both Holmstrom and Franzen are monsters in front of the net. I think Vanek has the edge on Franzen and it’s a toss-up on Holmstrom. Vanek gets the edge for youth.

If this game ends as is, you’d have to call it a signature win for the 09-10 Sabres version. Puck possession, faceoff wins, great team D, early lead, massive outshooting at even strength, 3rd period prevent defense.

Am i missing anything?

Here’s a question – and it might call for another post someday, but in the meantime…

Are there similarities between this team and the way Ruff coached the the last Eastern Conference Champion team? I’m pointing at goaltending specifically. I see some.

by krytime on Nov 4, 2009 9:12 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

I would have to give that some thought

I see the goaltending being similar but this team attacks much more than that team did.

Good puck-moving defensemen.

by destinsabresfan on Nov 4, 2009 9:15 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That team attacked. And they were team tough. And tried to run four lines. I think this team is closer to that one than the Drury/Briere teams…

by krytime on Nov 4, 2009 9:17 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Was Grier on that team or was he gone that year?

by destinsabresfan on Nov 4, 2009 9:19 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That team was regularly outshot...

not by small margins either. They gave up 40 shots a night and Hasek made all the saves.

Behind the Net actually did something about the teams that had the worst shot differential despite having success.

The late 90’s Sabres appeared prominently.

by Afino on Nov 4, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Hasek just did his thing back then, and they created a shell around him, and that was it.

This team attacks 10,000x more than that team ever did. They also possess the puck in the offensive zone so much better.

by HarryNeale'sGarden on Nov 4, 2009 9:22 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

You’re right; good point. Maybe I went a little too far with the comparison. Maybe my point was supposed to be that Ruff knows how to coach with a dominant goalie.

by krytime on Nov 4, 2009 9:21 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Ruff is usually good with adjusting to his talent

I think last season was the exception to that when he tried to force a style on the team and they couldn’t play that style.

I don’t think it’s really comparable given the style of hockey they play now compared to how they used to play.

Best fourth line in hockey

I think it’d be really hard to argue against that. Anyway to get stats from the other 31 fourth lines in the league?

Haha true that. I know everyone’s saying it, but it does feel like a different team this year. More sandpaper and fewer frat boys.

by Andy Boron on Nov 4, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

It's the system

It’s totally different. Last year’s team was still trying to play the way the lockout Sabres did….they didn’t have the roster yet to recommit to puck possession, shot differential, team D, and all the things they’re doing right this year.

They have the players this year, Lindy has them believing in the system, and it’s working.

So even though when the whistle went is technically not reviewable, Toronto awards the Sabres a goal anyway.

Just another example of how Toronto can do whatever the fuck it wants on replay reviews and there’s nothing anyone can do about it.

The 4th line with Gaustad is incomparably better

by HarryNeale'sGarden on Nov 4, 2009 9:27 PM EST reply actions   0 recs

Yes

Especially with his almost 70% faceoff win percentage.

by Andy Boron on Nov 4, 2009 9:27 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Absolutely

He is the best fourth line player in the league. The key is to keep him on the fourth line. That is where he is most effective.

If he keeps playing this way, Burkie is going to tap him for the national team. Gaustad is the exact type of player Burke wants on his team.

A signature win

Score: 3-0
Shots: 39-24
Takeaways: 5-0
Special teams: 2 PP, 0 SH
PIM: 8-14
Faceoffs: THIRTY NINE TO EIGHT

Derek Roy was 14-0 on faceoffs, jesus christ

That’s the way the Red Wings used to beat people. Good to see Lindy has the boys running the Babcock system properly. Now let’s get ready for the biggest game of the season thus far: Friday versus Philly.
