SPG Game

I quickly put up a post before the first game that explained the SPG Game.  Unfortunately I did not do a very good job of explaining it.  I will try to do a better job of explaining the game and the objective in this post.  As always , if there are any questions send me an e-mail or ask in the comments.

What is the SPG Game?

"SPG" is an acronym for "Shot", "Penalty" and "Goal".  The object of the game is to predict which Buffalo Sabres player will have the first shot, penalty and goal for each period.

How Does it Work?

You receive one point for every correct prediction you make.  This gives you a potential for nine points in a regulation game, 12 points in an overtime game and 14 points in a shootout.

How Do I Sign Up?

The SPG Game is free to play with a special thanks to Gary Perez for building the platform that drives these statistics.  You can sign up by visiting this page and creating account.  After creating account you will have to visit the game page to make your selections.

Prizes?

There will be prizes available for the winner of each month as well as a grand prize winner at the conclusion of the regular season.  The winner of the grand prize at the end of the season will win a Buffalo Sabres jersey.  We will start out small by giving away a Buffalo Sabres poster to the winner of the October SPG Game.

Congrats to zaniac75 on winning the October prize of a Buffalo Sabres poster.  I will be sending that out shortly.

Mobile Site

Remember that you can visit http://mobile.diebytheblade.com to visit the mobile site and you can comment from wherever you watch the game.  Hope to see you here.

Some questions...

Since the team is kind of close to the cap this year, does it make sense to carry 23 guys (once Lydman comes back)? I know it’s not much, but isn’t carrying those extra three just eating away the day by day cap? I know there are several teams around the league (Philly as an example) who have saved significant cap money this season by having some guys on IR.

What is Mair’s situation now? He cleared waivers, but then plkayed an NHL game. Is his cap hit still the same, and can he be sent to Portland without having to go through waivers again?

I really think Ruff is going to have a tough decision on who to sit when Lydman comes back. I know everyone will say the easy decision is Sekera. I just don’t think so.

There are like 8 defensemen down in Portland now, and a good bunch of other D prospects in the farm. It’s time to move one or two of them for another top six forward. I’d give up a lot to get one with some size, scoring, grit, and leadership. I know that’s asking a lot, but I think that’s one of the three missing things on this team now.

Luke Adam is looking like a stud. I can’t wait to see that guy soon.

Are the Sabres up for two physical games back to back? Lindy’s given them a lot of time off this year. There’s no reason they should come out sluggish, even with a hard game last night.

It’s easy to look past it now, but what the hell was Ruff thinking putting Myers in the shootout so early last night? Granted, Calgary could not have expected that, but in my mind, it had a lot of potential to backfire. It would have been a shame to lose a game on a move like that.

I’m really looking to see where Ennis fits in tonite. I can’t imagine he gets much more than ten minutes on the ice. I think Matt Ellis might have his chance to play a little more, which isn’t a bad thing I guess. I dont’ see Buffalo rolling four lines tonite.

Is Miller playing? I might have missed that somewhere – my bad.

Is anyone else looking forward to seeing Myers drop the gloves as much as I am?

I'll try my best to answer

Yes it is eating cap space but they don’t have any players that are making too much money that they would be willing to part with.

What is Mair’s situation now? He cleared waivers, but then plkayed an NHL game. Is his cap hit still the same, and can he be sent to Portland without having to go through waivers again?

Once he cleared waivers they had to make a decision on him. They chose to keep him on the team and therefore he has to clear waivers again before he can be sent down. They are also restricted from placing him on waivers again for 10 games.

I hope so but probably not.

Expected to play between Vanek and Connolly but I’m guessing that Roy will get some double shifts.

Is Miller playing? I might have missed that somewhere – my bad.

Yes.

Flyers are good at hitting late

Ennis took two or three late hits from Pronger on the power play and Hartnell just hit Connolly late and up high on that last rush.

Because this is Buffalo

Stealing defeat from the jaws of victory since 1970

by The Burl 8 on Nov 14, 2009 8:36 PM EST up reply actions

That’s very fair to presume. But how about looking at it this way – Philly’s been on a small roll. All rolls come to an end. If Buffalo can keep the pressure on early in the third, they just might fold, call it a day, and look to rebound against NJ on Monday. They’re due for a loss. I hope Ruff is preaching pressure from the get-go during this intermission.

I was wrong about Ruff rolling – he’s got his defense in order. Myers is just a shade behind Butler in TOI.

And I was wrong about Ennis’s TOI – he’s got some. I thought Ellis would get more time, but it doesn’t seem to be the case. Ennis has just fit right in as a top six guy. Still – gotta get the dude a “traditional” hockey number!!

by krytime on Nov 14, 2009 8:45 PM EST up reply actions

I hate that

I’m sure Miller isn’t thrilled with being the target in a shooting gallery, as he often is when Buffalo just tries to hold onto a lead (although it often works.) Let’s hope we play some offense, too.

by ccthemovieman on Nov 14, 2009 8:47 PM EST up reply actions

With the way Miller is playing, if they go into a shell, they’ll probably pull it out.

by krytime on Nov 14, 2009 8:46 PM EST up reply actions

Philly was definitely the better team in the second period. The Sabres haven’t been able to relieve the pressure but they have blocked the shooting lanes. All the Flyers chances have been from in close to the net.

I don’t think Lindy Ruff is the type of coach who will give a shit how much work Miller gets in the Olympics. In fact I don’t think Miller will either, I feel like he’s the type of guy who wants to play every game but Lindy needs to learn how to say no. If they have this little faith in Lalime then just trade him, drop him to portland or buy him out. Make room for somebody they have more faith in.

Pronger pushes Goose, Goose pushes back. Pronger scores, Goose answers back, again.

Pronger was on the ice for the goal, too. He had a nice view of Gaustad’s back as he tipped it in. Sweet.

Great weekend!

4 points against two excellent teams. Boy…….they don’t easy, though, do they??!!!!

by ccthemovieman on Nov 14, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions

Thank you, Sabres.

Great win. Nice week…

by krytime on Nov 14, 2009 9:31 PM EST reply actions

2 big wins

over two teams built for the playoffs. If you were critical of this team after last weekend, this week has to have you feeling pretty good.

What a couple of days. Wow. I am totally impressed with the heart, grit, and fight of this team. They have cajones to go with some skill and great goaltending.
