Something just feels right about these guys
Between the rookies, the vets brought in, and the maturing of the guys that have been on this team for a while.... It seems that we have a team that can get to and (oh my god don't say it) win the cup. A goalie that wants to prove to the entire US that he is the guy, Greer and Montador coming in and instilling some toughness, Vanek, Roy and Stafford another year in the system. And who could forget the young guys playing like vets. Myers and Kennedy earning there spots on the roster. This team seems to me so much more ready to do some damage. Can a cup run and a much needed championship be on the brink for us? god I hope so...

YESSSSS!
There is a little something of sparking here..
It’s not the same type as the excitement from the Briere/Drury/Campbell days but it’s a feeling of never giving up now.
The excitement is still there, no doubt.. but we get it differently now. Our goals are hard work, team goals. The BDC days were just pure scoring talent everywhere.
We rolled 4 lines like there was no tomorrow.
These 4 lines we have now need to be kept.
It is starting to feel like that spark slightly with them.
I don’t know what to say about currently scratched players though.
Now, we don’t feel like the Superpower anymore. We feel like the underdog that won’t back down. That no matter what, can & will make it through anything this year.
We aren’t going to be as overly unstoppable as we were those few years past, we’ll be different.
We know what we have to do, and we know how to do it.
Even if the games are ugly, we’ll still get through.
We’ve been through it enough to know how to use it all to our advantage.
it’s unbelievable how some of our players are playing now.
Miller is hands down the greatest goalie in the league right now.
Then backing that up giving us the mere 17 goals against in 9 games is of course Myers. (By the way.. the Washington Capitals have played two more games than us and they have 32 goals against.)
I don’t even have to start that discussion.
MacArthur with the team leading 5 goals.
Then there’s Kaleta, who I think is playing phenominal.
That was my rant.
7-1-1 so far. Do you believe?

I do believe
Sabres are the hottest team in the NHL right now how long will it last i say it will last along while because it looks like the whole team is just having fun and playing the system the way it is sapost to be played. And Miller WOW 7-0-1

Ok, let’s not get carried away here. We had the same great start to last season and there is certainly no guarantee that this will keep up.
So far we haven’t played too many powerhouses. The Canadiens (6-6-0), Coyotes (7-4-0), Predators (4-6-1), Red Wings (4-4-2), Islanders (2-4-5), Thrashers (4-3-1), Panthers (2-7-1), Lightning (3-3-3), and the Devils (6-4-0) have a sparkling combined record of 38-41-13. In fact only three of those teams are above .500, and we lost to one of those three. The Devils were a good test, but without two top players. We’ve yet to play Washington, Pittsburgh, or any of the other teams considered to be cup favorites (unless you count Detroit, but they’re not playing well right now).
I will say this though – I am quite pleased with the depth on this team. I’m not sure if it will work in terms of cap space but when you can have extra forwards like Mair and extra defenders like Sekera and Lydman – I have a feeling that will pay dividends down the road. And that’s not even counting the guys in Portland (Gerbe, Weber, etc.) who could probably fill in admirably.
In addition to literal depth we seem to be showing a great deal of scoring depth. Nine players have two or more goals in the first nine games – that’s pretty damn good. Being able to comfortably roll four lines is going to pay huge dividends, especially when the games start coming closer together.
We’ve had a forgiving schedule to this point – let’s hope we keep up this pace once the schedule becomes more punishing.

I disagree about the forgiving schedule.
That’s the record now… Let’s recycle a bit, shall we? Going into each of these games, only the Isles, Panthers and Lightning had losing records. Each of the other teams had beaten quality opponents and even the Lightning crushed the Sharks the game before they played us.
The Canadiens were regarded as one of the best teams yet to pay a game this off-season. Aside from the puck bouncing Montreal’s way, we could have had that game.
The Preds were 2-0 coming into our game after beating Colorado (dominant cinderella sensation) and Dallas (normal West power coming back) and we were the first team to beat them.
The Thrashers were 4-1-1 coming into our game and were considered a hot team with Kovalchuk playing all-world goalscorer.
The Coyotes have been the stingiest team in the NHL this season and Byrzgalov has been right behind Miller as one of the best goalies in this young season.
I really don’t have to say anything about the Devils and Red Wings. I don’t care if they’re in a slump. They are perennial playoff teams and we demolished them.
We will play Pittsburgh and Washington and Calgary and the Rangers. I can’t wait for those games because I think this Sabres incarnation can hang with any of them.
Here’s what I’m excited for:
Our top line has been dormant offensively but have been back checking strongly and playing great D. They will click like the rest of the team and when they do, it’ll be frightening.
extra defenders like Sekera and Lydman
You meant Paetsch, right? Lydman is a starter (and team leader in hits and blocked shots) and I want him on the ice any day over Nate. A digression. I agree though, our depth is wonderful. It seems that if we call up Gerbe or Weber, due to injury, we wouldn’t miss a beat.
The fact that we’re rolling 4 lines and not relying soley on Vanek to win us games. He will win us games though… he just needs to get in sync. He looks like he’s thinking too much out on the ice.
Here’s what I’m concerned about:
Pooping out our youngings and vets throughout the gauntlet. Rivet, Hank, Grier, Myers and Kennedy need to rest as the season wears on.
Lalime. You gots to step up and demand that your team really play for you like they play for Miller and you have come up with big stops along the way. Either you do, or I know a certain Islander/former Sabre that will…
Lindy getting antsy with the lines when they aren’t clicking right away. Let it lay, Lindy. Do the right thing and the team will compensate.

Other thing I’m excited for:
The possiblity of Miller staying dominant and hoisting a Vezina. It’ll be tough this year with the Olympics, but that’s why Lalime needs to step up or Biron comes back to Buffalo.

Maybe I wasn’t clear – the schedule was forgiving not just for who we played, but how we played them. This team has shown a propensity for playing poorly in back to back games in part because they also play poorly in front of Lalime. The schedule thus far has often had no more then 2 games a week, which is why we have games in hand on nearly every other team. But two games a week means we’ve only seen Lalime once (with unfavorable results) and haven’t played back to back much yet. Sadly, Miller cannot play every game this year and it’s the ones where he’s not in that worry me most.
That being said I was NOT suggesting that this team cannot play with any other. No team has looked particularly dominant to me (MAYBE Pittsburgh but they just lost Evgeni) and obviously any team can win any night. I wasn’t trying to discredit our record thus far at all – simply tempering expectations. As I said, the Sabres started out last year as one of the hottest teams – that did not transfer to a playoff berth, let alone a run at the Stanley Cup.
Oh, and I agree with the extra points you made about what you’re excited for and concerned about. When I mentioned Lydman as an extra defender it was only because he was currently injured and Paetsch had taken his spot in that game. Honestly, I’m not certain who will be the “starters” once Sekera is healthy too – I was hoping he’d have a rebound year and play more like he did when he first got called up but he may be the odd man out now. You’re right though, Paetsch is definitely the 7th or 8th defender if everyone’s healthy – but that’s a pretty nice insurance policy.
I’m less concerned about wearing down our rookies and vets then you seem to be though, that’s the great thing about depth – people can take a night off here and there. It was mentioned in another post and I thought it was a great idea – Mair could capably fill in for Grier every once in a while to keep them both fresh. Sekera for Rivet. Etc.
This team has played well against “good” teams for a while now. It’s refreshing to see them handle the games they “should” handle against the not so great ones. Let’s hope it keeps up.

I understand and agree with a lot of your replies. We have the beginning of the “3 games in 4 days” that will populate our schedule, or the long road trips that will test our team. Those will come and I look forward to see how they handle it. I’m quite optimistic… comes with the name.
I believe that this season will rest on the lovely catch phrase “playing the system”. What I’ve observed so far this season, is that the team is playing their game and not playing down and loose against weaker teams. The Tampa Bay game is kind of an oddity. They were coming off of a superb victory over San Jose and could have beat most teams. We scored a last second goal and won in a SO. That’s not giving up. Also, The lines seem to be clicking and I haven’t seen that in years. It’s the most balanced I’ve seen a long while. I just haven’t seen the team play this complete of a game in a long time… last year was very top heavy as far as scoring.
I might just have a hard time tempering my enthusiasm. I’m like a Bozo the Clown punching doll when it comes to the Bills and Sabres. Punch me in the face and I’ll just come back up, smiling and hoping that I don’t get hit again. Call me crazy, I believe that they could win it all every single year.

Bring Back Drury
We need one quality center to push to the promised land, and the captain is languishing on the Rags third line. Bring back the sick two way play and late game heroics we all loved so much while his stock is at its lowest!

Let it go...
Drury is gone, and he’s never coming back. This isn’t his team anymore. They’ve moved in, now it’s time for us to as well

Biron...
Yes, bring back Biron. Remember when he came in for the injured Miller and proceeded to win 13 games in a row? What has LaLAME done? He’s won what, 2 out of the 10-15 games he’s played for us? Get rid of him!!!
