SPG Game

I quickly put up a post before the first game that explained the SPG Game.  Unfortunately I did not do a very good job of explaining it.  I will try to do a better job of explaining the game and the objective in this post.  As always , if there are any questions send me an e-mail or ask in the comments.

What is the SPG Game?

"SPG" is an acronym for "Shot", "Penalty" and "Goal".  The object of the game is to predict which Buffalo Sabres player will have the first shot, penalty and goal for each period.

How Does it Work?

You receive one point for every correct prediction you make.  This gives you a potential for nine points in a regulation game, 12 points in an overtime game and 14 points in a shootout.

How Do I Sign Up?

The SPG Game is free to play with a special thanks to Gary Perez for building the platform that drives these statistics.  You can sign up by visiting this page and creating account.  After creating account you will have to visit the game page to make your selections.

Prizes?

There will be prizes available for the winner of each month as well as a grand prize winner at the conclusion of the regular season.  The winner of the grand prize at the end of the season will win a Buffalo Sabres jersey.  We will start out small by giving away a Buffalo Sabres poster to the winner of the October SPG Game.

Mobile Site

Remember that you can visit http://mobile.diebytheblade.com to visit the mobile site and you can comment from wherever you watch the game.  Hope to see you here.

Hi all

Haven’t been in a game thread for a few. IMHO this is a statement weekend for this team. Not a major one, but getting 3-4 points against these two teams matters. Just tuned in – anyone hear who’s starting in goal?

I’m thinking that Lalime may start tomorrow.

Just a thought

I know everyone is skeptical(typical Buffalo fans and I don’t blame you one bit), but we have a serious offensive edge right now. It’s not a blip on the radar. Our chances are great chances. Against the NYI, we are constantly attacking the net. Against Detroit, we owned them. I expect this season to be a fun one and a successful one.

FYI I will try my best to make it to Tampa next weekend for that game and cheer for the Sabres, since I am in Florida.

There you go.

actioncuse,

So far this season it looks like they are doing a couple of things different:

(1) Emphasis on playing defense and limiting opponent chances at all times.
(2) Play the offensive corners hard.
(3) Get it on net.

Well, except for Hecht that last rush. Glad it ended with a deserved PP.

by Afino on Oct 16, 2009 8:04 PM EDT reply actions

Oh, by the way...

I looked over this blog for an introduction thread, and I couldn’t find one.

I am a big Sabres fan from Syracuse, NY. My dad went to UB and is a big Buffalo fan and I didn’t fall far from the tree. Some might have noticed I’m in Florida right now, but I know the pain…and pleasure…of 30 degree weather…

Unfortunately I have never been to a Sabres game live. I would absolutely love to go to a game. I think of Buffalo as a brother(to Syracuse). I constantly brag about Buffalo’s (amazing) wings and have a nice supply of Anchor Bar sauce here(since Duff’s doesn’t have their sauce available for sale). Duff’s is the best in the world IMO!

Next week is Buffalo at Tampa and I will try my best to get there and be as loud and obnoxious as possible for the upstate team!

FYI I will do my best to update everyone else about places to watch the game free online from now on.

GO SABRES!!!

You'll be able to pick up a ticket at the arena for like $10.

I paid $15 last year for 2. On opening day. And then walked into the lower level in the 2nd period with no problem.

Okay.

First Tallinder had YET ANOTHER turnover inside the blue line.

Then Miller was absolutely nailed by Jackson.

Finally Gaustad got payback BIG time.

by dfderie on Oct 16, 2009 8:05 PM EDT reply actions

I’m glad Goose went after him the way he did but the Sabres had a 3-on-2 rush…I would have liked to see him wait till they finished that rush. I know that is impossible and I am not criticizing him, just hate to give up a scoring chance.

After Miller’s injury last season I’m okay with quick retaliation. Nobody touches our goalie this season. Nobody – even if it’s accidental.

Jackson didn’t mean to tumble head over heels over Miller, but he and everyone else needs to know that you can’t park it or be skating into our crease this season.

Of course we want every game perfect, but a win is a win at this point. It’s far from over, but of course I’ll take a 2 goal lead at this point.

by actioncuse on Oct 16, 2009 8:14 PM EDT up reply actions

The question is when do you tighten it up?

I sense that the Sabres feel like they can make that pass or take that chance against this team right now. (And they should – on paper we’re better.)

Being up 2-0 only means you keep playing like this. Now if it is Detroit, no way. And yes, if we let one slip in you begin to cover up.

by dfderie on Oct 16, 2009 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions

You don’t tighten it up. They didn’t against Detroit, because if they did, they would have been in trouble.

I didn’t think it could be worse than the first period but that was by far the Sabres worst period of the season. This game is not going the way I thought it would…except the 4-2 score of course.

Yeah, being outshot 28-17 isn’t something I expected.

Come on Buffalo!

Just walk away tonight with a win and fix the problems tomorrow! The 2 points matter even if you give up a bunch of chances!

by actioncuse on Oct 16, 2009 9:08 PM EDT reply actions

This game is feeling a lot like some of the losses last season. The Sabres are leading by two but there is no denying the Islanders have been the better team tonight.

It is troubling that we still seem to be playing down to the level of our competition. I do like the score though.

by Andy Boron on Oct 16, 2009 9:27 PM EDT up reply actions

I thought the Islanders were better in the first too.

Grier

I usually compliment his smart play but that was dumb play to dump the puck.

Nice rush

It’s good to see that Grier realizes he never scores on a shorthanded break and gave up the puck.

Nice tough play by Paille who has already been demoted to the fourth line.

PP Positions

I think we’ve had 2 D-Men on a lot of PPs tonight. Either Butler-Myers or Rivet-Tallinder. Have we been playing like that all year? Or is this a more recent development?

by Andy Boron on Oct 16, 2009 9:49 PM EDT reply actions

It’s been pretty common so far this year.

by Afino on Oct 16, 2009 9:50 PM EDT up reply actions

That has been the norm so far

If the power play continues to struggle I think they will put a forward at the point.

Did a quick PP points check from 08-09. Tallinder had 0G 1A, Lydman had 0G, 5A, Butler had no PP points. Rivet had 1G and 10 A. Let’s see him and Myers on the point.

by Andy Boron on Oct 16, 2009 9:55 PM EDT up reply actions

That should do it

Pominville has to be happy to get that monkey off his back.
