The chatter is the Atlanta Thrashers are going to send veteran Mathieu Schneider to the Buffalo Sabres in exchange for winger Maxim Afinogenov. Buffalo wants a blue-liner and hasn't been able to give away Afinogenov because no other team wants to pick up his $3.5-million salary

definitely
we need some defense and some more veteran defense wouldn’t hurt for sure. he’s been putting in more than 21 minutes in ice time per game(this would definitely help seeing our recent injuries) and i used to be a maxim supporter and defender, but i seriously don’t think he’s going to end up panning out. he skates faster than he can handle the puck half the time and it seems like he likes to play with the puck too much so i say get rid of him and pick up schneider.
Why would Atlanta want to get rid of Schneider? Especially for a player like Max at $3.5M. Unless I am missing something, this is just another ridiculous trade rumor. (E14)
If Granato and/or Giguere really think that this is "up-tempo," I feel bad for their wives.

Atlanta’s going to continue patching holes, while leaving larger ones. Is there anything Waddell can do to put his job in jeopardy? He’s alienated every fan, and presumably sponsors aren’t far behind.
What’s the thinking behind Schneider-to-the-Sabres anyway? Complement Numminen (who is admittedly currently out for a bit, but not necessarily long enough to trade for a replacement.

Yes
I’m doing a live blog and it will be up at 7:15PM.
Numminen has been a big disappointment this season when he has been in the lineup so the move makes some sense because of the experience that Schneider would bring. I think that Schneider may have more left in the tank than Teppo does at this point in his career and the Sabres don’t use Max anyway. That being said…I don’t see this trade going down although if I was Darcy and had an opportunity to make the move, I would in a heartbeat.

I agree that Darcy should make the move in a heartbeat, but I don’t see how it’s possible that Atlanta would take Max and his salary unless the Sabres threw in a prospect and/or a pick.
I don’t think Teppo has been awful, but I agree that he has been a little disappointing. I honestly think Ruff just gives him more minutes than he should.

Agreed
but keep in mind that Schneider is making like $5 million in comparison to Afinogenov making $3.5. Maybe the Thrashers think that playing him with Kovalchuk would help him out. At this point Max is hurt so I don’t see it happening but it’s still interesting to talk about.
