Final Score

One Night after a 2-1 shootout win against the Rangers the Sabres have an even stiffer test against the Stanley Cup Champion Detroit Red Wings.  Consider this to be the first leg of the Sabres Winter Classic tour.  After tonights game the Sabres will be off until Wednesday when they play in Chicago.

The last time the Sabres played in Detroit was during the famous ice storm in 2006 and the Sabres came away with a 3-2 victory while the players were all concerned about their families and homes in Buffalo.  Ironically a major winter storm is in the Great Lakes region again tonight while the Sabres are in Detroit.  The Sabres will probably be asking the league if they can avoid playing in Detroit in the future.

Anyway back to the on ice stuff.  Ryan Miller was great the last time the Sabres played in Detroit and he will need to be again tonight against the High-powered Red Wings squad.  If last night was any indication of his play, I would expect Miller to be excellent.

Starting Goalies

Miller will be back in net again for the Sabres while Ty Conklin will be playing for the Red Wings.  The Sabres have not had much luck against Conks in the past so tonight will be a stiff test.

Unfortunately I won't be around again tonight and I'm not sure that HO will be either.  Hopefully some of the regulars will be here to keep things going.  I forgot to set my DVR so I will need someone to help out with the Harry Neale Quote of the Game.

Aha!

Just commented on an earlier post asking if it was the game thread. Looks like the Red Wings are playing in their throwback jerseys.

THey just mentioned that

the empty seats for this sold-out game is due to the weather. SOunds like Detroit is getting socked. Right now I’m calling it half-full. Maybe worse.

Roy!

Nice rush by the entire line.

by Joan O. on Jan 10, 2009 7:20 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jeez

First we had an odd man Detroit rush. Then Conklin was WAY out of the net. Nice – no, GREAT save – when he got back in the crease.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 7:20 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

not a problem they knocked him down so he can still shoot

Joan

by Joan O. on Jan 10, 2009 7:25 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Conklin stopped one

and Mair, while on the ice, kept trying.

You know, with one goal, I’m thinking we’re almost at our average game scoring against Conklin.

Graphic

giveaways…

Wow

Detroit just picked it up three nithces

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 7:34 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

First intermission - 1 to 0

Buffalo 13-6 in shots.

Really doesn’t feel like it with how that period ended.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 7:39 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

is that puck made of lead or what it sure look’s like it the way were shooting

Joan

just like the goal we did get they were shooting it almost worked again we need to keep putting the pressure on

Joan

by Joan O. on Jan 10, 2009 8:01 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Right now?

In a best of 7 with this team we’d be done in 5. At best.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:01 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Nope.

Just acknowledging that the other team is really really good.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:04 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Detroit penalty.

Hopefully a PP despite the scrum.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:02 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

just shoot the damn puck

Joan

by Joan O. on Jan 10, 2009 8:04 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

They're good

A pass on the PP in their zone – not that bad, not that good though – turns into a 2 on 1 shorthanded rush.

My comment about losing in 5 was a statement about tonite. I’m hoping we look back and say this was a game they learned from come June.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:06 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Oh, and Connolly?

He went down and blocked that 2 on 1. Didn’t get injured either!

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:08 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Okay Game set.

11:09 left in the second. I’m guessing Detroit has a SOG lead this period of 2-3.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:10 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Vanek just missed a chance at the blue line

Next thing you know Detroit has a 3 on 2 and it’s MILLER!!!!!!! time.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:12 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I thought he did it a moment ago

MILLER!!!!!!

Way out of the net. Wow.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:14 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Miller again.

Nothing exceptional, but still. The defense needs to just GET IT OUT.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:15 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Again.

Miller is at least 5 feet out of the crease and somehow holds it.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:19 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

yes yes miller you show them

Joan

by Joan O. on Jan 10, 2009 8:20 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Jeez. Jeez.

Miller again. Our defense isn’t fast enough.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:21 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I felt like last night I didn't sond like I gave him credit

But Miller played a great game. Let in a goal I still think was a bit soft.

Tonite? WOW.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:22 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

3 on 1 for Buffalo?

They needed that.

And DO/HO – the Sabres are playing hard. Real hard. They just are playing what might be the best team in the league.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:24 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

it was

just a matter of time

by qdloser on Jan 10, 2009 8:27 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

terrible

second period by buffalo

by qdloser on Jan 10, 2009 8:29 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

I'd agree

but we’re talking Detroit. At home.

Last time we played we won but it was October. I’m interested in seeing what the Sabres do in the third. They haven’t played a good west team in quite some time.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:36 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

1-1 after 2 periods.

If we plan on getting any points tonite it begins with the play in our zone. GET IT OUT.

If we want any kind of chance to get play in their zone if starts when we GET IT OUT of our zone.

If any player other than Miller helps us win we either GET IT OUT or we somehow survive to a SO.

Way too many passes in our end of the ice. I’m not talking giveaways – just saying that the passes need to make sure we GET IT OUT.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:33 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

let's hope

the first two weren’t in a few ways! But yeah, it’s 1-1.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:48 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Miller decides to hold it twice

for faceoffs. No rebounds. Are we looking at – oh. Wait. It’s our 4th line figuring out what to do!

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:51 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Yes.

15 seconds left.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:53 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Mild scrum on that.

Gaustad made sure Conklin had it covered up.

I’m impressed with how disciplined Detroit is.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:55 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

14:01 left

Miller save. The Sabres are beginning to control things a bit more though.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:57 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

37-14

Detroit SOG lead.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 8:58 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

That was BIG.

Miller had it the whole time.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 9:02 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Stafford with golaie interference

despite the fact he carried it into Conklin.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 9:03 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

they have

to have close to 50 shots on goal

by qdloser on Jan 10, 2009 9:07 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

8:56 left

So far we’ve been called – properly – on the two worst rules in the NHL.

Game delay for clearing the puck over the glass. Goalie interference on playing the puck into the goalie.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 9:07 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

40 shots so far by the graphic.

But there’s another 10 or 15 that never made it on net.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 9:08 PM EST reply reply actions actions   0 recs

Not sure I agree yet.

Let’s see how we do against Chicago. Dallas is a lock for a win.

by dfderie on Jan 10, 2009 9:21 PM EST to parent up reply reply actions actions   0 recs

My dish went out for goal #2

and that last one pretty much was how this game went.

We have a ways to go to play this team.
