Around SBN: Steve McNair Found Shot to Death

Winter Classic 2009 : Wrigley Field

It's going to be tough to top last years Winter Classic that was played at Ralph Wilson Stadium but the Blackhawks and Red Wings are set to try today at 1 PM.  If you want coverage, SB Nation has coverage.  Your options are limitless.  If you want a general perspective there is FFrom the Rink.  If you want the Blackhawks perspective try out Second City Hockey (Note that some off color language will ensue), Looking for a Detroit Red Wings perspective check out Winging it in Motown and even The Cubs Blog (Wrigley Field) Bleed Cubbie Blue will have an open thread for this amazing event.  Also note the very cool logo on Bleed Cubbie Blue...that is awesome.

From the Rink coverage

Happy New Year and welcome to your home for the festivities for the Winter Classic. I'll be live blogging the game along with a host of other SBN Hockey writers, including three who are at the game in Chicago providing photos, twitters and hopefully even video from Wrigley Field as things get underway.

Please also be sure to visit Bleed Cubbie Blue, Second City Hockey and Winging It In Motown for more coverage.

This chat will be simulcast on Yahoo! Sports' hockey blog Puck Daddy while Greg Wyshynski recovers from his massive headache, so I expect a pretty big turnout. Should be fun:

Winging it in Motown says...

The Winter Classic is at 1pm EST on New Year's and will feature two of the league's best teams in what should be an exciting game outdoors. The weather looks like it's going to cooperate - just below freezing with a chance of snow later in the game.

From Bleed Cubbie Blue...

I'm the hockey fan John McDonough's been trying real hard to get back for the last year, since he took over as Blackhawks president.

I'm not quite old enough to remember the Hawks' last Stanley Cup in 1961. But when I was a kid, Saturday night Blackhawk games on WGN were must-see TV, with Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita keeping the Hawks perennial contenders, and Lloyd Pettit's "a shot! and a goal!" cries whenever a Hawk scored.

This is exactly why they play the Winter Classic!  Enjoy the Game and don't forget the Sabres play the Leafs tonight.

Awesome!

People roaring, fireworks and jets overhead, all timed perfectly!

The fans on the rooftops in the back of Wrigley are all there, too! Very cool – love this event.

I missed most of it

I was able to see bits and pieces of it and the hockey itself seemed better than last year but people liked the snow and the shootout last year was fitting.

I agree

Much better conditions made for better ice and a better game but somehow the snow and closeness of last year’s contest made it a more cool event. Then, again, we are biased because it was in our backyard. Still, I enjoyed it; liked the features before and in-between periods and came away, once again, very impressed with the Red Wings.
