1st period recap:

Overall, the thing that stood out was Patrick Lalime’s performance in goal. Montreal has a number of excellent chances but Lalime turned every one of those away, except for a bad angle shot that bounced off of Toni Lydman.

Interesting line combination of Roy-Gerbe-Afinogenov. Tons of speed from those guys and was probably the team’s most effective trio. Gerbe looked a bit too tentative while Max played pretty physical and Roy dominated the puck quite a bit.

Also of note, Tim Connolly is wearing the “C” tonight with I believe Pominville and Roy as assistants.

2nd period recap:

The Sabres looked alright the first three-quarters of the second period, playing very responsible in their own end with sold goaltending again from Lalime. Roy played well, drawing two penalties and skating aggressively.

Then the breakdowns with the man advantage. First the Sabres gave up a breakaway to a Kostitsyn that converted it to a short handed goal. two minutes or so later yet another short handed goal given up, that time to Plekanec.

At some point, the breakaways are going to stop, right?

Really nice goal by Roy.

Unfortunately the power play couldn’t follow up to tighten the game.

WOW!!!

What a shot by Gerbe…I may be rethinking him playing in Portland…that was a bullet

Gerbe Gerbe Gerbe

Phenomenal third period from Gerbe. He was all over the ice and seemed to be out there half the time (even if he wasn’t). If he continues to play like that, you’re right D.O., he won’t be in Portland very long.

Win or lose, I could care less, I love the way the Sabres battled in the third period. Hopefully that can carry over to the rest of the preseason.
