[open thread] Buffalo Sabres @ Pittsburgh Penguins
vs
7:30 PM TV: MSG Radio: WGR550
Injuries will be the story of tonight's game between the Penguins and Sabres. Both teams will be without key players with the most notable being Sidney Crosby. Crosby left the ice during the morning skate because of soreness in his ankle and will not play tonight. The Penguins are also going to be without Marian Hossa who was acquired at the trade deadline for Colbe Armstrong and Erik Christennsen. That is welcome news for Buffalo who will play without Jaro Spacek and Dmitri Kalinin due to injury and Adam Mair and Tim Connolly are questionable.
The Sabres are four points behind the Philadelphia Flyers for the eighth and final playoff spot. The Sabres have earned one point in each of their last two games but one point is not good enough anymore. They need to play with a killer instinct to get two points tonight. It will not be an easy task because the Sabres have lost all three game sto the Penguins this season, including the 2-1 shootout loss in the Winter Classic.
If you haven't registered for a free account yet please do so now and join us for some riveting conversation about the game. Hell the game tonight means so much I might even have a beer.
Maybe we can even crash the party over at PensBurgh because Frank will be ready to go for his open thread. I ask that if you crash the party you be nice and make Die by the Blade proud.

Leafs/ Flyers
The Leafs and Flyers are tied at one. The Leafs were ahead 1-0 but the Flyers tied it on a goal by Jeff Carter.
That was a missed call
There should have been a holding call on that Roy play.
Bad Start
Again...they have to start playing like they want to make the playoffs
it looks
like they are playing this game like if i win i win if not oh well
Dumb ass
Penalty. The team is down by one and clinging to their playoff lives so he decides to punch the guy in the face.
What a cheap hit
That should be a suspension of epic proportions. The five minute PP means nothing compared to losing another defenseman.
Season over?
It doesn't appear that the Sabres have any plans of making the postseason. They get a 5 min penalty after losing another defenseman, and you think, cheap shot, they'll want to get one back for that. Nope, 5 mins and they get outshot by the shorthanded team. That's disgusting. That was over 3 mins of the most disgusting hockey I've seen all year. Then, a dumb hooking penalty, and they go 4-4, yet Pittsburgh scores in like the first 20 seconds. Disgusting. Way to try to get back at them for taking Paetsch out. Way to step up to the plate when you're running out of playoff possibilities. Awesome.
Fucilli
I couldn't have said it any better myself. They look a beaten team even though they are not out of it. Confidence means a lot and they have none.

If we didn't already know
I think we do now. This game is OVER!!! NaNaNA...NaNaNa hey...hey...hey goodbye!!!
Campbell
I was tough on Campbell after the trade talks began and the contract situation was clearly getting to him, but now, it appears that he was the glue that kept this team together. I'm wondering if the players saw the way management dealt with him, and they were appalled at the way Buffalo offered him a 3 yr deal after he was the best defender left from the Eastern Conference Finals runs. Sort of like, this is how you reward your mainstays, your backbone of the team, a successfull team? And after that, are the players saying, well if thats how its gonna be, I'll see ya next year. Does that kind of negotiating make Ryan Miller eager to re-sign. I would doubt it. They got rid of his protection. They got rid of his leaders in front of him. I just wonder how they'll deal with him, because, they're gonna have to make it a lot of money, and a long deal, because there are a lot of other teams that will.
But Wait
Although I agree with what you are saying in some respects you have to agree that they would have over payed him if they went any higher or longer. I like Brian Campbell but to me it seemed insane to sign him to a deal that mirrored that of Phanuef or Boyle because he is not as good as those guys. I still think Tampa made a huge mistake by signing Boyle to that contract and he is better than Campbell. I think you may be right about the way it affected this season but it was the right move for the franchise.

At least
The Leafs are beating the Flyers, so if they find a way to regroup for the weekend they can still make a run. The team we are watching tonight doesn't have a chance though.
Campbell
I agree, they may have had to overpay him, but where are they gonna replace him? In free agency? I am really not sure who is going to be out there in free agency, but I think that keeping homegrown talent should be a priority. I liken it to the NFL. You always hear how a team's best free agent signings are the ones from within. I guess I just dont know what they're going to do this offseason to try and get back to being a cup contender. It appears that its gonna have to be a lot.
What about a home town discount
If you look at the great players around the league they take less to stay with their team. Joe Thorton, Sidney Crosby, Jarome Iginla...hell even Phanuef would have got more on the open market.

Briere
Briere was going to give us a hometown discount, but the Sabres decided they wouldn't take that, they wanted Drury who was not interested in staying here even though the Sabres matched the Rangers offer. I guess it depends on the player and their agent. I think Campbell would've taken a little bit of a hometown discount, but he wanted 5 years, not 3. Its hard to say. I dont know what the players or management are thinking.
You're right
Who knows what the hell any of them are thinking.
