Sabres shutout at the Bank
I sat here trying to figure out the best way to describe this game and a few things came to mind...boring, disappointing and even...worse than the Bills Game. Eventually Lindy Ruff helped me figure it out, it was FRUSTRATING! I wasn't really surprised at how the first period played out but never did I expect the second to be even worse. It wasn't until the third period that a goal was scored and that was on a bouncing puck in the Sabres zone. Jason Arnott was able to get his stick on the bouncing puck and beat Sabres Goalie Ryan Miller. J.P. Dumont scored the only other goal of the game, unfortunately it is 2008 and not 2006 so J.P. plays for the other team.
The game was as boring a hockey game as you could find and in fact the Sabres managed only eight scoring chances. I would love to review the tape to find those eight chances because I didn't see them. The Predators didn't play a great game but they did an outstanding job of keeping the Sabres to the outside and not allowing them any good scoring chances. It wasn't until they trailed 2-0 that Buffalo turned up the heat on Predators Goalie Pekka Rinne who recorded his first NHL shutout.
After the comeback win on Friday against the Pittsburgh Penguins I was raving about how well the Sabres played in the third period against a team that normally thrives in the third period. In the last two games it has been the complete opposite. On Saturday in Montreal the Sabres were outshot 10-8 but had only three shots until they made one final push in the closing minutes. Tonight it was a 0-0 game heading into the third and the Preds scored twice and were out shooting Buffalo 10-1 until Buffalo made a final push.
The Sabres will take a couple of days off before heading on a three game road trip that begins on Thursday in Florida. It will be the Sabres first trip to Florida this season and first game against the Panthers.
Harry Neale Quote of the Game
If you haven't figured it out yet, I am a huge fan of Harry Neale and his one-liners. After every game that is televised by MSG I try to find a quote from Harry that makes me laugh out loud and post it here for your enjoyment.
Harry Neale in reference to Predators forward Jordan Tootoo skating feet first into Ryan Miller...
"Without a doubt this is a non-approved natural approach to a vasectomy"

Boy, I'll tell ya
It doesn’t get much worse than Sunday and Monday here for Buffalo sports fans. You’re right: the hockey game was worse than the Bills’ contest, if that’s possible. What happened to “home field advantage?” The Sabres have been awful at home for awhile now and even the Bills can’t win in cold weather at home.
You are also right about Harry Neale. It took awhile for me to appreciate his comments and his great sense of humor.
I’m not sure Lindy Ruff can help provide us with a more offensive-minded team than Dick Jauron can with the Bills, but I don’t know hockey like you. I’m just looking at the way both of our pro sports teams play and I see similarities in playing “not to lose” as opposed to going all out for the win. I don’t think either of these guys is a championship coach, but maybe I’m being too harsh.

My thoughts exactly
The first thing that went through my head when the game ended was WOW, it sucks to be a Buffalo Sports fan right now. Than I realized that we’re used to this and at least the Sabres have four months to figure things out…the Bills have four weeks and that probably won’t happen.
As for Lindy Ruff and his status with the team…I think it’s secure and rightfully so. It’s not his philosophy that is hurting the team it is the players execution of that philosophy. It’s evident by the teams they have beaten…the Sabres have beaten some of the leagues best teams and have looked good doing it…it is the weaker teams they seem to have problems with. I have no explanation for what happened last night but overall the team is in good hands.

OK, hope you're right about Ruff
Us middle-aged guys are getting a little antsy here in Buffalo, after all these years of coming up short in hockey and football. Ten-plus years of no Cup with the same coach; can you at least see why some of us are a little dubious about whether Ruff’s the guy to lead us?

well
Ruff has been to the cup finals and should have almost won it…he also was one game away from winning it all (in the confrence finals) against a pretty good Carolina team that won it all…and when was the last time we won the presidents trophy…ohh yeah the only time we won it, when Ruff was coach….DO is right it’s not the coach it’s the players, there doesn’t seem to be a drive in them, there is no spark to light the fire, usually Ruff is good at this (calling out Vanek last year) but I’m not sure if he is motivating them the right way this year

I'm with you
I have lived through plenty of disappointment as a Buffalo Sports fan…I’m too young for the 75 Finals but I remember The Bills…“I’ve got a feeling” in the early 80’s…wide right and all the other Super Bowl losses…I remember no goal and the four injured defensemen in 06. It’s kind of what drives us as Buffalo Sports fans.
