Captain Rivet to have arthroscopic knee surgery
Buffalo Sabres Captain, and defenseman, Craig Rivet has apparently had arthroscopic knee surgery. The procedure was supposedly taken place on Wednesday October 22, 2008.
The injury, which wasn't sustained during a game, gradually became worse as Rivet continued to play.
"It's something that needed to be done because it wasn't going to go away," coach Lindy Ruff said. "He's been hobbling pretty good."
So far through 6 games, Rivet has 0 goals and 3 assists with his 1st season with the Sabres and his 14th career season.
Nathan Paetsch, who has been a healthy scratch in all six of the Sabres' games this year, will replace Rivet.
"It's an opportunity for Nathan to step in and get some quality playing time," Ruff said. "We just want to see him play solid defensively."

Right move
This was definitely the right move. It’s early enough in the season that he has plenty of time to heal. I know this is a playoff team and I want to have a healthy Rivet in the playoffs.

this can be good or bad
I have had my experiences with knee A-scope knee surgeries (2 in 3 years) and this makes me a little nervous…based on the report it say he will miss atleast two weeks, which to me says that they don’t know what is going on and they need to look around to find the problem (MRI is inconclusive), this can be good and bad
best senario is no problem just a little strain,
mild senario torn meniscus (cartilage between bones) this could put him out 2-6 months,
worst senario torn ACL/MCL this is a doosey and could put him out 8-12 months depending on sevarity
I have high hopes for this team and Rivet was an imediate impact…I know the buf team doctor’s are top notch I have actually went to them for a consulation one time (family freind) so I know he is in good hands and will recieve the best treatment…my concern is what does this do to our blueline
does Ruff tell Paetsch he needs to be physical or Weber will come up…I think that is the key element that Rivet has brought to our team (look at the way he defend Mair) so hopefully his replacement knows that is the role he needs to fill
how about this question…if he is out a majority of the season what happens to his captaincy, would he reliquish it for the better of the team or would Ruff give it to some one else and who?
