Buffalo Sabres - News: THOMAS VANEK NAMED NHL'S FIRST STAR OF THE WEEK - 10/20/2008

Thomas Vanek gets some well deserved kudos from the NHL today. I have been talking this guy up since the Pre-Season but reality is that he is streaky. I want to revisit his play in about a month and see if he is still scoring. I don't expect him to stay on the current pace but he should at least be productive.

We’ll see a true test of both Vanek and Backstrom(Star #2) when the Sabres are at Minnesota on Thursday.

The Sabres goalies haven’t been too bad either…in fact they are 1-2 in save percentage and goals against average.

I thought that was a little unusual. Last season when the Sabres were 4th in the league in goals scored, the whole story was that the Sabres were so bad because they lost so much offense in Briere and Drury. This season when they’re 1st in the league in goals against the story is all about Vanek.

Makes me really wonder if any of the national media is actually watching the team.

I do an internet radio show on Monday night’s and we were talking last night about that. The biggest story this season is the defense and goaltending. I’m happy to see Vanek play well and I hope it continues but let’s give some credit to the defense and goalies.
