Prospect Profile: Mike Weber

Name: Mike Weber
Position: Defense
Shoots: Left
Height: 6'2"
Weight: 205 lbs.
Birth date: 12/16/87
Age: 19
Hometown: Pittsburgh, PA
acquired: drafted 2nd round (#57 overall) in 2006

Background

Mike Weber is a big strong defenseman who hails from Steeltown USA.  As a 15 year old Weber played for the Pittsburgh Jr. Penguins and then he moved on to play for Windsor of the Ontario Hockey League.  He played three full seasons with Windsor and part of the 2006-2007 season before he was traded to the Barrie Colts.  Weber signed a three year entry level contract with the Buffalo Sabres on 8/15/07.

Scouting Report

Weber is a big strong guy who never backs down from physical play.  He is a defenseman who thinks about his own end first and the offensive end second.  He is a fairly good skater for such a big guy and will not get beat by speed.

Performance

06-07 Windsor 30GP-3G-16A-19P -11 86PIM
06-07 Barrie 30GP-3G-12A-15P +22 86PIM

Future

I would expect Weber to play in Rochester for a year or two.  The Sabres are in desperate need of a player who plays the style of Weber but they will not rush him along.  The Sabres have lacked a strong bruising defenseman since the departure of Jay McKee last season.  The Sabres spent a second round draft pick on Weber and they will expect him tp perform in the very near future.
