Time to Extend the Young Guns

We can talk about the departures of Drury and Briere for months (and we probably will), but I know that if I'm to preserve my sanity as a Sabres fan, I'm going to have to move on.  So there - at this precise moment, I've moved on.  Time for the Sabres to take some action - not only to preserve the core of their still-talented team, but to prove to the fans that they're serious long-term contenders as well.

It's time to hand out some contracts to our young guns.  We all know that Thomas Vanek is going to get a new deal; Larry Quinn all but confirmed this in yesterday's press conference.  Ryan Miller is another obvious guy to extend.  These are the two biggest names, and should be cornerstones of this franchise for years to come.

What other names would you include on this list?  I personally wouldn't mind seeing a deal given to Derek Roy.  Brian Campbell is another obvious possibility.  Sound off, Sabres fans - add some names to that list, or scratch players off my list. :)

I was ready this morning...

but I figured that with it being my first full day on SB Nation that I owed it to people to talk about it for at least one more day.

And who will be the new captains?

After what he had to say about the departures, I'd like to see Miller get the C.

I have to agree...

Unfortunately the league does not allow Goalies to be captains

I never knew that

And I was wondering why I never saw it, too. Sounds like a dumb rule.

I dunno

I kinda think your captain should be a skater. You need a guy that can talk to the ref at center ice or even have some "conversations" with guys in the corner. You don't want to have to have your goalie skating out to center ice for an explanation of a penalty call.

Plus, the goalie is in many ways already the leader of the team with or without the C on his chest.

I'd give Captain to

Teppo and Hecht.  Obviously Teppo needs to be re-signed, but I think he's a lock if (when?) he's brought back.

I'd consider Campbell and Mair too.

Some young guys a little farther down the road

I'm gonna look a little farther down the road, and with Drew Stafford most likely going to make the top team, the Sabres may need to start planting new seeds in the farm. Tim Kennedy is wow, as a freshman, I can't wait for him to be playing along side Stafford. Nate Gerbe wouldn't be bad either, but he's a little small, the same size as Patrick Kane though. Marc Gragnani has a solid future it sounds like to. But Kennedy, in case you missed it, just watch this video.
